Do not start any threads on US mass shootings. Please keep all such discussion in this thread
Thread is borked so new one here.
Imagine having to start to amalgamate all other US mass killing threads into the one thread because there's so many of them their threads could clog up a discussion forum.
America. F*ck yeah.
Just remember, it’s not the guns that are the problem. Just need to put religion back in the classroom.
The guns aren’t dangerous it’s the maniacs we keep selling them to that are dangerous, Marge.
The over saturation of firearms and the idea that firearms can solve anything is the Biggest issue along with lack of any real mental health programs
but muh freedum
The black helicopters man ,the Black helicopters
Abbott came out and gave the usual spiel about mental health after the latest shooting and seemed to gloss over that he had just cut the funding for mental heathcare.
Not that mental healthcare actually is the problem of course, it is abundantly clear that its the guns.
I think it's the people trying to make it ALL about the guns.
Other countries have relatively large amounts of guns, but don't have commensurate numbers of shootings.
Guns are a problem in the US, because it's an unsuitable place to have so many of them. But it's a lost cause trying to rid a nation like the US of guns... it's simply never going to happen. In fact gun availability is increasing, and looks set to continue along this trend regardless of gun control measures.
So the solution needs to shift elsewhere, away from the tools and towards the core motivations and causal effects of the violence. But then certain groups would be denied of their favourite political football to kick around... so round and round we go! People just looking to score points rather than actually solve the problem.
Blame GTA
And it's only going to get worse ,we already seeing 3D printed semi auto pistols and assault rifles ,no way of tracking or enforcing them ,
Sooner or later some numpty will be able to print a belt fed light machine gun and see what happens then
Those countries with large amounts of firearms tend to still have pretty stringent controls of the use and transport of them.
Solving "violence" is an even more unachieveable goal than solving the gun issue. There are violent people and events everywhere - the problem in America is the ease with which they can access the tools to cause so much damage.
I've had this debate out with a lot of Americans over the years and I've never found this "nothing can be done about the guns anyway so what's the point" argument to be convincing. I say that because I think it's a cop-out to avoid being challenged on the actual rationale that underpins the belief that guns are needed in the first place.
The gun economy in America, like all economies, works on narrative. There is a narrative as to why you need or should want a certain product — and in the case of America's love-in with guns, while the 2nd Amendment gets trotted out as the inviolable right, the narrative as to why it's so inviolable appears to rest more in the concepts of self-defence, home defence and this pretty murky hypothesis of balancing the odds against the government should it decide to become tyrannical.
The great crime of the conservative Right in America is that its brighter proponents are either happy to massage these narratives as a means of creating vote-generating fear of the Democrats or are unwilling to actually apply the same "facts and logic" thinking they appear to pride themselves on when it comes to trans issues. Because ultimately, each of the narratives that underpins the tight cling of American fingers to their arsenal of weaponry are capable of being challenged and de-escalated.
Their nations also tend to have far less crazy/angry/mentally unstable people as a percentage of the population too.
Well, we better hope we can solve violence issues, because good luck getting rid of guns. It's never going to happen. There isn't the political or societal hunger to achieve it. And besides, it's only going to become easier and easier to get a firearm over time...
What will you do when every citizen with access to a 3d printer can make a gun in their own home? What good will strict gun laws be then? You can't ban 3d printers, and the materials used to fabricate a gun are not prohibited or difficult to acquire.
Both sides have been obsessing about the weapons for generations. What has it achieved? Nothing... it's time to shift the focus onto other aspects if they ever want to stand any chance of changing these worrying trends.
A shooter in Jacksonville killed several black Americans in a racially and politically motivated attack. His gun was covered in swastikas, he apparently left one or more copies of his manifesto. He first tried to commit the shooting at an HBCU, before then deciding to target a Dollar General. FBI treating this as a hate crime. He drove out from Clay County where he lived with his parents to carry it out.
The number of guns in the US is clearly insufficient to prevent mass shootings, they should keep on increasing the gun numbers until the numbers start coming down.
They should also experiment with the lethality of the weapons by increasing the pure gun numbers in one state and increasing the lethality of the weapons in another (e.g. hollow point, incendiary rounds, maybe grenades and start off with low level unguided rocket launchers). They should then use that data to determine if they should continue producing more guns, or more powerful guns and weapons.
If the numbers still won't come down, then they should look at giving each citizen their own personal nuke, the concept of MAD would surely dissuade further mass killings.
The other option would be to take down the UK monarchy, they wouldn't need their guns at all in that case and could concentrate on increasing knife numbers until the number of stabbings started to decrease.
Thoughts and prayers. Rinse and repeat.
Shove their thoughts and prayers up their holes. Every politician who takes money from the NRA or their lobbyists is just as responsible for these murders as he shooters themselves
400 mass shootings in the US so far this year. Only once before have they reached that number since they started keeping details - think they said on CNN this morning that was 2010, and the 400 was reached in December
There is a certain irony that the US Embassy was warning US citizens to be more vigilant when visiting Dublin due to concerns over the crime levels
What was going on in 2010, ah yes, peak stochastic terrorism
It's no wonder we see it peak again as we see yet another peak, as we did then, in Americans calling for insurrection, civil war, and race riots.
That was also the year his show finally got canceled. What a wonder that killings fell off again after that.
Potential aftershock incident of the Dollar General incident, the shooter there first tried to get access to the local HBCU
Now UNC-Chapel Hill is under lockdown in North Carolina.
Perp in custody, shots were fired.
Faculty member killed
One of the worst states for mass shootings, Chicago, has stricter gun laws than other states.
Illinois trails behind Louisiana for mass murders.
I award you +5 growleaves points for not replying "Chicago isn't a state, moron!!"😅😅
IL holding down the number 2 according to your chart, so CBS have not fibbed.
It does however obviate your nonsense trying to link their ranking to their gun laws, whereas LA has some of the loosest gun laws in the country, and a long history of racial killings to boot.
How does it do that?
Of the top 2 states for mass shootings, one has loose gun laws and the other doesn't. If loose gun laws are the cause of shooting massacres, then logically how is it that they don't both have loose gun laws?
Of the top 2 states for mass shootings, one has loose gun laws and the other doesn't.
Then you agree, it's been obviated.
No
But you've made it clear there is no correlation between murder rates and gun control measures between individual states.
At least 16 dead, 50 or more shot, white male shooter still at large...
