1,000 jobs coming to Athenry
Gamestop is closing down. They are having a clearance sale.
That many jobs for Athenry is absolutely insane. Could be the start of something even bigger.
There's a nice feature piece here talking to people in Athenry about it and a guy from Dexcom as well.
Athenry has been positioned for the last decade or more for large scale growth. They're working on the ring road (which is bonkers if its just for a 4k population town), a massive reworking on the water and sewerage pipe network to add a load of capacity and planning is approved for nearly 1,000 homes (all of which have been on hold waiting on the pipeline work) which will add several more thousand to the town.
The IDA site is a pretty large one and is right up against the motorway, see below the light blue area. Thats from the 2012-2022 Athenry Local Area Plan
I've also marked the completed sections of the ring road in green, with the next section about to start construction, in orange. The section to follow after that is the red one
Sounds like bicycles and public transport will really contribute to in the area.
Sadie Cramer Art and Design opening soon in the former Bowling and Market shop at 1 Middle St, opposite Dough Bros.
Hickey Meats butchers opening at Dominick St nr Mill St end
In the old Joyce's bookshop unit.
Unusual to see small butchers opening, best of luck to them. Is that Hickey the former manager at Colleran's?
Yep.
Think he said Friday (19th). Best of luck to them. They'll have 1 customer anyway
It’s like the west end is going full circle, a butchers back in an old butchers shop!!
Best of luck to them, great to see that shop re-opening!
When was it last a butchers shop?
A long time ago now, it was the regular butcher of a lot of the west end, Claddagh etc.
What's the shopfront reflected in the window?
E.Brun at a guess.
Thank you.
Can I ask you, the current sections of bypass, two sections coloured green, did they all open together on same day?
Second, the possible entrance to the planned factory, where will that be? I'm guessing onto roundabout near Pres school?
No. The top part opened first, the bottom part opened second, and coincided with the M6 build, the left bit opened maybe 4 years ago.
The orange bit is due to start construction this year I think
That's the most likely entry point I'd say but we won't know more until planning is submitted
Salthill phone and computer shop had its door open this afternoon.
Located in the old Go Dutch unit beside the bakery.
Petworld is getting stocked for opening beside Pure Skill (opp Lidl) in Knocknacarra.
BIA Boru in the ESC has been closed any time I've passed in the last 3 weeks. Didn't last at all.
James Whelan Butchers coming to Dunnes Knocknacarra this autumn.
nothing ever lasts any length of time in that particular location across from The Diesel Shop, IIRC Chopped were there and then some Doughnut/Coffee place. Rent must be crazy
Donut place was upstairs opposite the outdoors shop.
Chopped up sticks at the beginning of the pandemic and left things standing there for ages.; Looking like they had just left the place unattended.
Seemed like nothing changed for months. & the place remained empty until Bia Boru turned up.
I thought | had seen activity around there recently though. Maybe just food being present when I passed.
Kearney's Service Station Lough Atelia Road, have a dog bath installed in front of the car hoover facility.
A poster on the bridge end of the fencing with the brand name. Seems to be card only.
Took me a couple of reads of your first three words to work out what you were on about. "Chopped up sticks"? Somebody was selling firewood?
Worked it out in the end.
up should have been upped so it was more past tense yeah. But I did get shades of Marie Celeste at the time. Looked like things for food preparation etc had just been left where they were last used and i think fridges etc mostly stocked. Which is why it seemed like place was just left unattended. That's how I'm picturing it at least.
Knocnacarra florists have a sign on their window in the spinnaker building and have one in the vacant unit across from devon dental(used to be the fish stop). Im assuming that is where they relocated to.
I was just thinking after passing there today. I took this a couple of days ago thinking it was odd that if the place was closed that they didn't empty the fridges. Though they seemed to take forever over that when Chopped closed which leaves me wondering how long things can be left in a vacated space.
But what did occur to me tonight is that there is opened milk at the bottom of that fridge . So even if everything else is in a sealed bottle/can in a fridge that is either on or off there is a stack of milk there that is going to be going off anyway. Hope fridge door keeps the smell contained.
I did notice that the cake stands to the right of the edge of the photo had been emptied which I'm not sure was true last week.
