It's a classical adagio from the opera Spartacus by Khatchaturian, but seems to fit so well into the opening credits of that series.

I'm sorry but I can't think of The Greatest American Hero theme without thinking of this Seinfeld scene.
The city of gold is a major blast from the past. The theme songs to TV shows and cartoon it seems had some effort put into them as the show itself.

And not just the theme tune but the soundtracks in general.
