I had a look and couldn't find a thread for theme tunes. My starter: Taxi
Sopranos
Beat me to it
In another vein
Dig that sax
This was the only theme tune/opening credits i watched every time without skipping past it!
this has to be one of the greatest of all.
Probably more nostalgia than anything but
The A-Team
Magnum PI (original)
Knight Rider
This is the version i grew up with
will i make myself unpopular by ruling out the sopranos, because it was an existing song already before being adopted for the sopranos?
Not with me.
Another favourite of mine, The Sweeney theme tune. The version used in the closing credits though which had a slower tempo and I think a different key.
Great baseline

this was composed by the same guy
The Flashing Blade
You probably have to be at least 60 now to have grown up with this.
Succession is top for me, never skip it, just sitting there waiting for that mad high note piano bit at 1:09 everytime
Of current theme tunes, I love Succession and The Mandalorian
The plinky piano in Succession hits just right, then into the strings - and towards the end when the plinky piano reappears, that moment is absolute chefkiss to me. Mwah!
The Mandalorian is perfect too, the beginning of it evokes some Morricone western cowboy things, and then there's this relentless beat, with the trumpets recalling some of the best Star Wars themes of previous movies.
I listen to both of them right through every time I watch either show.
Nowhere near 60 but i grew up with this. admittedly during the reruns in the 1970s.
Spongebob theme, love it
Narcos.
Loved the theme song from the very first episode.
as a kid in the 80's this one stood out
Theme tume by Clannad for Robin Hood
second vote for clannad:
The Pacific

McGyver.
I love this one. Always sends shivers up and down my spine:
Hard to beat these iconic two;
2 absolute crackers.
I love the one for Severance, a simple piano motif that builds into a lovely downbeat ambience.
The Pacific just edges out Band Of Brothers for theme tune. Although BOB is the better show, by small margins.
The Leftovers - Season One. Haunting to perfecting.
The Leftovers - Season Two. Genius song choice, but not original so I won't include it.
Also like The US Office, and Parks & Recreation, just for the positive feels they bring.
Strong, identifiable theme tunes can often sell a movie or program on their own. I.e. The Magnificent Seven and Born Free themes to a large extent spawned a host of sequels and a TV series respectively IMO.
another one from the nostalgia vaults.
there can only be one. Composed by the great John Barry.
...
wasn't born free a movie, though? the theme won an oscar, which wouldn't be possible for a TV show.
