Do Garda speed guns send out automatic fines?

I know speed vans send out automatic fines but I always assumed that you had to be pulled over to be issued a fine if caught by a Garda holding a speed gun. However, I was driving the other day and seen a Garda standing with a speed gun but she was on her own and there was no car or anything around if she did need to pursue a driver.

It doesn't change. Drive on the left, overtake on the right. Unless you are overtaking something you should be driving in the leftmost lane.

Maybe it is but not as dangerous as tailgating. It makes the driver being tailgated nervous and makes them keep looking in their rear view mirror thus not paying enough attention to what's in front of them.

I totally agree trucks, lorries and vans are the worst. Sometimes they do be bipping and flashing me and everything and then when they overtake, the merge back in really quickly and nearly side swipe me. I usually try to remember the reg, location and time then email the company they work for and complain about them. Just because they want to get their work done as soon as possible so they can go home early is no excuse to bully other drivers.

Yeah but it's only realistic if traffic congestion was constantly low to normal whereas in Dublin its more often normal to high.

Seriously though, I know the reason I started this thread was because I was going a few km over the speed limit but that's because I was the first car and there was a huge queue of traffic behind me. Moral of the story, other (bad) drivers can unfortunately have a bad influence on safe drivers.

Tailgating is a problem. Brake testing someone is another problem with the desired intent to cause the driver behind to react suddenly which can directly lead to an incident. Anyone who brake tests another driver is a dick who shouldn't be on the roads

The tailgater is the bigger dick because the brake tester wouldn't have to jam on the brakes if it were not for the tailgater up their arse in the first place. Unfortunately, you have to fight fire with fire in petty matters such as this as the gardai either don't have the time or uninterested.

Brake-checking is dangerous, full stop. Get into the left lane and stay there, let traffic who want to drive at the speed limit overtake you.

Sounds like you should pay a lot more attention to your own driving, than you do to others.

The brake testing driver doesn't have to jam on their brakes at all. They choose to.

They knowingly create a scenario that can cause a severe incident and donthis purely with the intention to punish the driver behind. There is no justification for it: not even an impatient and dangerous driver behind them.

If you can not see that, and your continual defence of this activity suggests this, then there is a problem with your ability to drive safely.

No I wouldn't do it at those speeds only around suburban where the limit is 50. On motorways, I always stick to the middle lane and go between 90 and 100 km/h. If I'm not going fast enough for them, they are welcome to overtake me on the inside lane.

Yes they choose to because if enough of us do it, it may deter tailgaters. As I said, tailgating is not considered a serious offence, therefore, it is not enforced. In fact, I've been tailgated by gardai before. The only thing that will deter tailgaters is the fear of being liable if they crash into the back of another car as it is almost always the driver who is behind that is at fault I believe.

Not that I feel they are driving too close, they are. I'd rather not have to do it and I don't do it often but I cannot just let them get away with such dangerous driving. They need to get a fright and they may think twice the next time they choose to try bully someone in front to drive faster.
