RTE's new 8 episode gangland drama with an all star cast.
AMC start date is September 9th I can't see a start date for RTE just a coming soon.

The smart gangsters keep out of the public eye and avoid social media. They’re also spread across all social strata despite some people thinking they’re all like Bren. You’d not survive running a gang for too long in 2023 if you were that reckless and aggressive.
Those at the head of successful outfits are clever. They pause, reflect and weigh up options before taking action. Amanda, Frank, Michael and Birdy are all smart.
.
The difference between Nidge flirting with Fran's missus and say Michael and the pharmacist. The first fella has a bit of charm and the Michael fella is making a day's work out of it. He probably only pulled as he's a good looking lad, definitely not because of the chat about his epilepsy tablets.
Kin is a bit reflective of the modern world in that there are less and less characters.
Take the Viking lad, he'll roar and bawl and shape with his top off when in prison, cut himself, all very predictable.
You never knew what Fran was going to do, ging gang gooley etc. He was a character. The Kin crowd are all too similar.
LH was on from 2010-14. So in 2010 very few smart phones alright. The Bebo scene is the first one of LH, where Nidge is sorting a new gun. However Facebook and twitter were well established in 2010. Kenny Egan's famous twitter escapades took place in 2008 Post Beijing Olympics.
You'd have to go back to 2004-5 for pre social media for most people.
Bebo page 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You'd miss Nidge, wouldn't ya?
Love/Hate wasn't pre social media...
I like both but that’s a massive statement. Loads of goodies around over the past 4/5 years, across all genres. Those two have a huge part to play for sure.
I'd broadly agree with you. It's not uniquely Irish/Dublin in the way that Love/Hate was. It's still a decent crime/family drama.
I'm not so sure that I agree with you about the characters appearances. The current generation of gangsters are fairly infamous for showing off their blindingly white teeth and their botox and their designer gear and watches on Instagram, so Kin is probably more reflective of that styling rather than the pre-social-media gangsters of Love/Hate.
Re the republican dissident group in Love/Hate, I am pretty sure that it was the Continuity IRA...not that it matters for this thread. I do remember at the time that some posters were confused - were the IRA (Provisional) not on ceasefire etc!
I have enjoyed Kin so far. Season 2 is particularly good.
Herself and Lankum are the best things to happen to Irish music since the late 80s
Are people comparing it with peak love hate though?
I didnt think much of the first couple of seasons of love hate and it ended up being excellent. I think this show is going to grow and grow.
Kin is fine, watchable, good suspense etc.
But it lacks the sense of locality and Dublin feel Love\Hate had. It's mostly humourless. You've no characters like Fran with quips like Connors being 'the most peaceful fcuking pipe bomb maker he knew'. Nidge was equally hilarious. His interaction with RIRA at the funeral of Git and the session that night. So much humour from him.
Kin takes itself very seriously, a shower of cloned looking neck beards who are constantly in serious mode. No personality. They remind me of a certain set you'd see in the gym. There's an effort at sophistication that draws from Kin. The Bren fella is a bit forced for me too. Most of the Love Hate boys went around in ordinary clothes or tracksuits with messy hair like Fran. The Kin boys are preening wannabe Vikings brought to us by Vidal Sassoon. Even the oul Bren lad has to have shaved sides and beard.
Apart from Amanda the female characters are bland and forgettable. Trish, Siobhan, Darren's sister, the willowy D4 golden haired girl who died of an overdose etc all played a certain role well.
I know people will say don't compare with LH etc, but it's the only RTE show we can compare with and it falls down for me.
he's a bit of a Daredevil I'd say
that pharmacy bird a solid 7 outta 10 - hardly a stunner; i'd say it was her aimin' moreso than Charlie Cox punchin'
Yes Michael did well for himself there plus both of them are in pharmaceuticals so lots in common
She’s having an impressive twelve months with this and the last ever track played on Peaky Blinders. Sold out tours and decent chart placing at last. All fully deserved.
'Pothole in the sky' by Lisa O'Neill
I had to wean myself off her music and now fully off the wagon again after that clip. Love it.
Anyone know the song playing after Viking killed Kem when the car was burning?
I remember Shane McGowan and Sharon Shannon doing this in Castlebar the weekend JD passed away. Not an entirely sober rendition.
Depends on your nationality and age.
Its a reference to a Joe Dolan song
Am I supposed to know what that means.
both suits
Same as that. It was being shown again on rte a few weeks back and I watched a bit of a few episodes and thought to myself how did I think this was so good first time around.
There seems to be a bit of a rose tinted view of it on here, and I’d have been guilty of that myself until I rewatched some of it.
I think Kin is good, this season definitely better than the first. Yea there are things that could have been better acted, or better thought out, but at the end of the day it’s fiction, it doesn’t have to be 100% accurate or believable to be enjoyable.
If we were to only watch what’s true and accurate on tv you’d end up with nothing only nature documentaries to watch.
For anyone that doesn’t like it then just don’t watch it, that’s the approach I take to hundreds of other shows on tv and the scripts, settings, acting etc in those shows never cause me any reason to complain as I’m completely oblivious to them! It’s fairly simple really.
The tree huggers need to treat themselves every now and then.
Ah man you think that’s bad you should see the MCU, there’s a lad made out of iron. And a spider boy. Mad stuff all together.
The chip van in the middle of nowhere up in the mountains is ridiculous - how can the writers put this stuff forward with a straight face??
Was the last season of Love/Hate not pure rubbish?
Think I remember being very let down by it.
Frank only appeared for a 1 scene
Bren was funny when he was on about 'Frank saying stuff to the priest'
