DeSantis has played this incredibly badly to be honest. In US political terms he's very young, he's only 44.
He could have sat back and allowed Trump to crash and burn in 2024 and then positioned himself as the modern unifying saviour of the party and reached out to the independents by not being completely mental.
But, instead he went full MAGA and has burned any hope he might have ever had being President as he'll never get that stink off him.
Trump is absolutely correct because what's going on here is bigger than Trump. If you think of the whole Tea Party thing as a mould which the Republicans happily spread, then Trump's really just a fruiting body, and the underlying fungal network is vast.
I must disagree with Graham in the sense that even if they didn't nominate Trump, they would have been destroyed. Once it was clear Trump had a movement, he was never going quietly and would have used his base as blackmail. The time to defeat Trump was not 2016, but 2008/9 whenever the Republican party decided to really double down and aggressively foster the hate, fear and ignorance that was beginning to build online. And maybe even that would have been futile as it was all critical to Facebook's business model.
In Montana republicans voted to ban tiktok for personal use in the state entirely. It’s expected to be signed in to law January. It won’t appear on AppStore’s from then but those who have it installed before the ban won’t be affected apparently. Banning abortion, banning tiktok so much for the party of freedom. I don't think it's that simple, though. Bandy X. Lee has had 'issues' with TiFG since he was elected and kind of hasn't let up about them, and that article was written right after the insurrection. The second article, I'd expect TiFG voters 2 years after the 2020 election to be unhappier than Biden voters. If you assume the profile of the TiFG voter is older caucasian, they're two years older now. And, it's been 2 years of hype of how bad things are from their eco-system feeds. Plus Covid and inflation, people are feeling pretty rotten in the US.
@MisterAnarchy is not wrong. TiFG got a lot of votes in the last election and not everyone voting for him is a mouthbreathing cousin-forking MAGAt. Many vote the R party line because that's what they've done. Where TiFG's party is shooting itself in the foot is their right-wingitty virtue signaling positions on abortion, schools, guns. Even Biden should win in a walkover if TiFG's the nominee if the GQP doesn't reform its message. If a different GQP type gets the nod, that's a different story - and I still can see that, with TiFG promising support if the elected GQP candidate hands him out a few pardons.
