Just heard on the LW transmission that there to stop broadcasting on the LW band from 14 April 23. 😪
maybe the MusicMann 279 project could lease it and finally get on the air!
I'm pretty certain I was actually listening at the time of the crashover - the mostly ad-free, late-stage Atlantic 252 setup suited me quite well!
Slightly off topic but iirc Chris Carey had a long wave tx sitting in his garden at the time of his passing that was intended to be used in -a takeover bid' of the MusicMan project.
I'm thinking of all that lovely professional grade coax and masting, just rotting away, when it could be used by others at their own places.
A 200ft mast would be overkill for me, and the maintenance cost would be horrendous, but something smaller would be quite nice. A couple of sections...say a hundred feet total.
RTE might be glad that they are pulling the plug this morning as the Irish times have given a prominent save 252 campaigner a platform today https://www.irishtimes.com/opinion/2023/04/14/cutting-rte-radio-1-longwave-is-a-slap-in-the-face-for-elderly-emigrants/
252 has just played an announcement saying the frequency is closing at 9am then cut back to normal programming. News now on air. And now Tubridy.
Well they are late pulling the plug as the awful Ryan Tubridy show is on.
I noticed that the closure announcement this morning once again has the wrong Sky channel number on it.
I read that and thought who is this fool that still thinks its the 80's - then saw it was written by one of the campaigners and it made sense.
Does she not know that they got a postponement in 2014?
Does she not know that RTE radio is available on several other medium in the UK - far better quality too
As usual with these types of do-gooders, she trashes the people she is meant to represent and says that cannot use modern technology (a TV!!!) and "depend" on LW rte to connect with home.
What a load of codswallop
Noreen Bowdem describes herself on Linkedin as Versatile digital communicator working to creatively connect Ireland and the Irish diaspora.
She also says: I have a long background in websites aimed at the Irish diaspora, and I'm (still) passionate about the power of the web to bring people together.
Am I the only one that finds that ironic?
one comment on the petition came from a woman in her 60s who couldn’t find any other way to tune RTE other than on LW, yet she was able to figure out how to register and post online to complain 😭
252 is in perfect sync with the Radio 1 FM transmitters that I can hear. Wasn't always the case in the past, at least for Clermont Cairn on 87.8.
They finally sorted out their issues with the LW transmitter! 😀
Still going, wasn't it supposed to stop at 0900?
Is anybody actually listening...?
According to a post on Facebook, a 2rn engineer dispatched to switch off the transmitter got stuck in Dublin traffic
They just pushed the faders down on DAB
People do post an awful lot of shíte on Facebook 🙄
Steve Conway wrote an article on Jounal.ie about this.
https://www.thejournal.ie/readme/atlantic-252-steve-conway-longwave-shutdown-6043078-Apr2023/?utm_source=facebook_short&fbclid=IwAR3haEWE_I6nQxBck8d9-14n0jYEbiylRWticVHU-rfWqejQ6V-6N4pbm3k
Is there no mod around here anymore who could merge the 252 thread5?
Where is the irony ?
She obviously is tech savvy and is using her skills to advocate for those who are not.
That happens all the time.
She actually mentions the postponement in the article.
She is well aware of the alternatives but is merely trying to help elderly people who may need assistance to adopt to them.
There is nothing in the article that "trashes" the elderly Irish in the UK, quite the opposite.
It can't be denied that the save 252 campaign has portraied "elderly" expats in the UK as sick/lonely/poor/illiterate, one thing they always fail to highlight is that a significant amount of the people who participated in the survey 8 years ago actually owned a computer at the time.
So is it still on, or.....??? Anyone hear the switch off?
Still on air , just switched back to generic shutting down today announcement
Just checked now... 252 is still on, with Joe Biden coverage (relay of R1 News) - maybe they are leaving it on for anyone listening, until he leaves?. Not a good move if you are arguing that it is not listened to :)
If anyone here wants to phone and ask what time it's going to be turned off, this is the phone number of the transmitter site 0469557350, and yes there's people up there this afternoon
They gave an answer to someone who emailed a few days ago. Obviously conflicts with the closedown announcement.
I was in contact with RTE about that and got this answer: “In relation to your query, the transmitter will be switched off at midnight Irish time on April 14.”
Yes, there used to be an approx 2 seconds lag on LW compared to FM
All the FM transmitters, including 87.8, should normally be "in synch" audio timing wise as it can get extremely irritating for motorists otherwise, AF jumps to-and-fro between transmitters can happen a lot when driving in some some areas.
Thanks, hilarious that they couldn't even get the timing right. Still, gives me time to dig out something capable of receiving it and can hopefully find a blank tape too!
Crazy how a national radio station where everything should be planned and scheduled to the second cannot even communicate the closedown of a monumental transmitter. Not mentioned once by anyone on-air today, not even Dobbo on the 1 o'clock news....
With all the high-priced 'talent' in RTE it doesn't seem like there will be any closedown celebration....
