New Munster chat thread folks. warning deserved there. https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=109477571#post109477571
You seem to really struggle to produce centres though. Although Frisch is IQ, he’s not home produced. I must admit I’m still a bit puzzled by Goggin Leaving. For both parties, it would seem to have made sense for him to stay. Unless Munster have already lined someone up of course.
So Dan Goggin has finished his rugby in Ireland by earning himself a 9 week ban due to foul play in the AIL.
Apparently bans relating to AIL activity don't carry on outside of Ireland so his Australian adventure will not be negatively effected.
we have seen an improved output from the academy in recent years
Yep, and that has to be maintained and ramped up even more. It's the only long term fix.
But we have seen an improved output from the academy in recent years.
We’ve also have the lowest number of NIQ players of any Province so I think we have some scope there.
its jake flannery after all
Yeah, I think the bigger issue is that the departure of Goggin and the non-arrival of Flannery being a problem shows how wafer thin the squad is. Like, we should be able to shrug them off without a second thought.
Fixing this is a multi year task involving foreign signings, lads from other provinces and most importantly, an improved output from the academy, year after year.
3rd choice 9 is Patterson right now so not too shabby. Edit- sorry this was in response to someone that said a new out half might be playing with a 3rd choice 9
Why do you and a handful of other posters always have to include "I'm sure you'll perceive this as some attack on Munster"
I thought we were having a reasonable discussion but that type of dig is just wearisome at this stage and makes me opt out of the conversation.
Who was Pienaar blocking at Ulster. Was he getting in the way of any Irish scrumhalf?
Munster don’t have any centres that will travel to the RWC bar a major injury crisis. So you could argue there is less need to sign one. As one will already be in place.
Im sure you perceive this as some kind of attack on Munster. It’s not, it just reflects previous policy.
Delahunt retiring and not moving to Munster
Who are the centres that will travel to the RWC, who will be their back ups that are left at home.
Any in Munster that will be held back by us signing a NIQ?
Sure we’ll probably know from the results next weekend, if not then the weekend after. Don’t think that’ll make any difference to recruitment, discussions can take place while waiting.
Same, Coughlan looks a good prospect. Had one shakey appearance when getting ~25 mins earlier in the season, but you’d forgive that for a young player.
Another option to Cronin could be to recruit just as cover during the RWC until Murr and Casey are back. (I think Alby got extended similarly last time).
Munster can't afford to wait that long if they're planning on brining in someone.
The Flannery news is obviously not a huge deal - its jake flannery after all - but its not a small one. Ulster were looking in serious trouble at 10 so they've just shared that problem around slightly.
It will probably depend a bit on how the next two URC rounds go.
If Munster end up in the Challenge Cup next season, then I can't see why we wouldn't use that to develop academy/squad players, much like Connacht did this season.
Ok but that has not been the policy in the past. So we’ll see what happens. Personally I don’t believe Munster will be allowed sign two NIQ centres but we will see.
Cronin has been poor for us and I thought he was ending this season but maybe he's ok as cover. I'd prefer to see us go ve time to Coughlan if it was between the two of them.
This discussion started because Ulster announced they had re-signed Flannery, who was mentioned in despatches that Munster might sign as cover.
What’s Cronin’s situation? He and Coughlan would be reasonable for cover during the RWC at least, as 4th and 5th choice.
I don't think Leinster are going to give up any player that's currently in their starting 23 for Heineken quarterfinals.
Munster will probably have Carbery and Butler to cover for the URC. Even if Sexton gets injured, Harry Byrne and Frawley are the cohesion replacements who will be drafted in.
I'm more worried about scrum half. There are rumours that Patterson has suffered a serious knee injury in training. Murray and Casey are both going to be in Irish camp.
Who says they would be no 3 carbery has poor form ….Crowley has promise but we don’t know his level …..if and a big if it was frawley to come in it’s a level playing field and a straight shoot out as to who is starting 10
What was plan b ……unless we’ve a truck up our sleeve next season it’s going to be no better than this ……a very poor front row against quality opposition …..major problem in the most pivotal position 10…..earls /o mahony heading twoards end of there careers coaching ticket have it all to do
Well if there's players floating around that are suitable and Nucifora/Munster can persuade them to sign up then there's no need for NIQ but if those players want to stay where they are and take their chances there then he can hardly stop Munster signing NIQ players.
Well Nucifora has always favored movement between provinces over NIQ players. In this case I am thinking of Frawley as more of a 12 who can cover 10. Which is how Leinster view him and possibly Ireland too. I’m just using Frawley as an example as I can’t think of any Ulster or Connacht players who’d fit the bill.
You started this asking would Nucifora sign off on two NIQ. Now you're introducing a possibility of him coercing a Leinster player to move here while also having just said no one could force Healy to stay.
So, if we're talking about the possibility of Munster signing players from Leinster then surely those players would want something more than cover to Joey & Jack. There's such change coming in Leinster next year would any outhalf opt to leave there to be #3 in Munster.
I suppose it depends on who’s available. If I was Nucifora, I’d be having conversations with Frawley. Neither Leo or Leinster fans would be happy but it’s a move that makes a lot of sense for Ireland.
What was Nucifora supposed to do, steal his passport?
Healy chose to go.
In terms of the Irish 10 shirt he was probably justifiably behind at least 5 or 6 guys (maybe more), so it’s hardly unreasonable that he wasn’t capped or in squads.
He recognised that himself and made the sensible decision to go to a weaker nation with less competition, where he has a better chance to compete.
Good luck to him, but I don’t see how anyone in Irish rugby are to blame for this.
I've previously posted that it would have been a **** thing to do, so no, I don't believe we should cap players which would obstruct their playing career paths elsewhere.
If Munster are seeking a replacement to Healy then why would anyone care if the replacement is NIQ, the IQ one we had clearly wasn't required.
As for centre, the few IQ centres we have aren't required by Ireland so who's career are we blocking by bringing in an NIQ centre.
Any player can leave, they can’t make them stay. Unless you believe we should cap every player at every province to fulfil their dreams of playing international rugby? Having 2 NIQ players in one position would be very unusual though.
He/Farrell/Munster have just allowed an IQ leave the country & probably never return, why would he care about us signing a replacement to him.
Would Conor Fitz to Munster make sense?
