Is it possible to stop cows going to heat?

Want to keep a couple of cows for the summer and not put them back in calf, but don’t want the hassle of them jumping on everything every 3 weeks. They have hurt weanlings on me and keeping them separate wouldn’t really be an option. Can the vet give them something to stop them, or is there such a thing going?

If you've a stock bull you could bull them once, then estrumate after 12 week, do this for two occasions.

I wouldnt be a fan of doing it for luck reasons, but it's one way.

It’s not guaranteed to work every time tho. With the price of cows why would anyone want to keep them over the summer with the risk of mastitis, straight to the mart with them imo.

True on estrumate not working alright. Presume he wants them to feed their calves over the summer.

Yeah they would be calving now but I don’t want to put them back in calf. All AI here. Are you not allowed sell them as a cow and calf pair anymore in the new SCEP? Otherwise I would sell them away in a month?

I've culled a couple every year for last few years doing what your doing. They've never hurt the weanling but the weanling bulls lose bit of condition following them around especially when their over 6 MTHS. They'd be out of breath and sweating. I just let them be. I'll have 2 marked to go this autumn again.

Sorry , thought you meant dry cows with no calves. I think you have to keep the pair until the calf is five months old for the SCEP.

I would always have a few cows like yours over the summer, keep a few bullocks for heat detection, they would be after the cows but the spring born calves wouldn’t really bother until August/September.
