Given that we know Putin has no qualms about killing people, I would definitely wouldn't bet against this being a fsb operation that had approval in the Russian leadership. Their latest offensive has stalled big time and the military bloggers such as ghirkin etc have being critizing the military leadership a lot lately. This bombing is likely a message to the military bloggers to not be as critical. Particularly with the looming threat of the Ukrainian counteroffensive in the coming weeks. They need to have the military bloggers praising the regime and the war or least not telling the full truth of the failures This is a brutal but effective message to the military bloggers, tow the line or you could be next.
Putin would want to correctly gauge his people's appetite for war if this is really his strategy because it could have the opposite effect where people note that not only are lads coming back in body bags, but now there are bombs randomly going off around the place, and this could cause a marked rise in political pressure to bring the war to a swift conclusion (note: large recruitment drives have not brought the war to a swift conclusion).
While we may never know the truth of this particular assassination, for sure it was well planned and executed. The fact that it happened in St. Petersburg, is another thing to consider, So far, Putin has kept violence to a minimum in both Moscow and St. Petersburg, he does not want to disturb either of these two cities by moving the war closer to them. So there has to have been a good reason to carry out a bombing there. Maybe in the next few days, the reason will become clear?

The rift is growing wider...I wonder who's backing him? Some of the Oligarchs / Silovicki? there was a post awhile back claiming to be a conversation between two wealthy Silovicki being critical in the extreme of Putin, and the present situation Russia is in, and blaming him for it. Of course, when it was discovered, they went into denial mode, claiming that the whole thing was a computer generated fake, designed to make trouble.

They definitely have been making some gains inside of bakhmut, keep throwing bodies at at a wall and cracks will eventually appear,
It's a sobering thought that Ukraine are losing their best and brightest in this battle while Russia are shedding the dregs of society - presumably, the convict scum that are on the front lines are lifers sent down for violent crimes and their departure from this world is mourned by no one, least of all their Wagner bosses....
