Totally different situation. The Chinese were never really a huge market for us. Generally we export to higher priced markets as well back five years ago China did not have there pig meat issue
Brazil is a huge exporter to China. Back when we were banned there was a 3-4%neef surplus. Now there is a 3-4% shortage. Two of the bigger suppliers Australia and the US are struggling with drought
Its was easy to ban us back then now it might a different matter.
Where do lads see Beef prices over the next few months ?
I’m forever an optimist but I’d say they’ll hold or strengthen coming into the summer. If numbers drop in the coming weeks they should definitely strengthen. Wouldn’t be surprised to see bullocks at €5.5 base before cattle start coming off grass.
It’s unreal the numbers still coming out every week and the price of meal.
I would imagine come august/September the factories will pull the price fast to try and get some sort of control. Could see 50cent coming off the price from September on.
I Wouldn’t like to be buying expensive stores now to kill off grass at the end of the year.
It's hard to know. While Irish supplies have held up overall EU supplies are back 3% and there is no replacement. Take the situation in Holland with dairy cow numbers dropping due to new cow number limits this factors into a reduced beef supply. Add as well carcass weights dropping is adding to reduction
Worldwide supplies are tightening as well. Irish beef has gone from the bottom shelf in Italy, Germany and the Low countries to being a premium product like Kerrygold butter. The risk is the way a lot of our beef is finished in the last 50-80days in feedlots. This will come back to bite us in the butt at some stage.
After all that high prices cure high prices. It could collapse at any stage.
Same as most years. Decent prices up until the traditional mid summer peak supply of cattle hitting 30 months when the price will fall back by around 10%.
I think it will be will be below the €5/Kg come June and drop further after that. There will be a greater number of cattle coming fit of the grass this summer due to less winter finishing. This will play nicely into the processers hand.

Kill is only 4k behind this time last year. I think there is about 20-30k less of a potential slaughter number this year. You also have the Rugby world cup in September which might keep prices up during August.
Last year from April to June kill was kept high by high cow numbers slaughtered.

That’s my read of it also. Except it’s 50-60k less to be killed this year. Unless a big drop in demand I can’t see them being able to drop it back to 5 by June. Inputs are coming down so never know.
Winter finishing happened as normal this year with the same kill almost so there is not an extra flush of grass cattle above normal.

Prime cattle ( heifers and bullock) are about 7k less than last year but young bulls up 4k. They are gone from the end of the year kill.
I take it no real change in factory quotes the last few weeks

Factory quoting 5.20 for steers and 5.25 for heifers this week…was hoping for a lift but their sitting tight at that

Agent rang over the weekend looking for bulls. Was offering €5.45 but I’d say there will be more to be got in a week or two. Wouldn’t be taking €5.20 for bullocks.

€5.30 is freely available for heifers around the midlands.
Hereford bonus is gone from 15 to 20 cent and AA bonus gone to 30 cent now leaving them at €5.50 and €5.60.
Good news. It will keep the killing of unfit and barely fit cattle high taking them out of the chain for later in the year.

Bid 300 kg Hereford bullocks to €1000 and I didn't get them I simply wasn't at the races.
That's crazy. I assume they. Were from the dairy offspring. I was buying the likes of them for less than €2.20/kg 12 months ago.
Wat are good Angus heifers and bulls making not dairy types 12 month old around 300 to 350 kgs .....

What did they finish at?
Too a degree yes but you either buy them or you don't at the end of the day. Whether there's anything to be made out of them is another debate entirely and although you or I (or the OP) wouldn't give it there's lots of others who will. There's a good chance they've been bought for the summer grazing job and will be showed again in the autumn.
That seems to be the run of those good CHx type cattle atm and you'll hardly buy them much less anywhere. If you want them you can only be the runner up so many times and they could well get a bit dearer if the growth took off next week and "grass fever" sets.
Granted you could buy a different type of a beast at a different price but a lot of them are only for bringing through to slaughter and don't suit being sold live in the autumn. I've seen bundles of FRx yearlings sold recently at circa 300-320kg at between €500-€550. However the lad that is buying the CHx most likely wouldn't take a present of those FRx. There's lots of men who like looking at good stock for the summer months and will pay accordingly. I see it myself with lad's, color and shape ect come before price.
I've an uncle who wouldn't let a horned weanling in about the place because he hates blood/skulling and wouldn't sleep worrying they'd bleed out after it. It doesn't matter if you landed with a good horned calf €300 cheap atm the very first comment he'd make is that he didn't want horned stock.
They finished at 1430...yes I was glad... So easy to get trigger happy on phone 😁😁
Killed a share of these good ch bulls last week. The top lads came into €2700.
With the grass ready to burst out of the ground Do I replace them with poorer limos at €1100 or maintain quality and pay €1400?
At todays prices There is €400-€600 difference between the two when finished.
Would you mind giving a breakdown of how the 600e differential works out between the two types of cattle. Out of curiosity more than anything.
I would think there has been a decent twist for guys finishing bulls over this winter even with the high price of inputs.
