So the balls-up has started since last night which makes Fairview from clontarf to Edges corner a single lane with bollards down the centre.
This will be a permanent feature and works will take 21 months.
Makes sense though, do it during the Easter Holidays while traffic is expected to be less, and it avoids weeks of weekend closures. Hard to plan these things out precisely, hard to predict exactly when you'll be ready to start work on something when you got so many dependencies.
In fairness though, two days notice is taking the piss a bit.
..
How long will the orange bollards outside Joey's last?
Separates two sides of the road, so hopefully a while!
The issue previously was that the bollards separated two lanes in the same direction. We'll have to wait and see.
As a Joey's past pupil, that isn't Joeys in the photo, its Marino Tech (although the orange bollards are probably outside Joeys also!)
IrishCycle.com have some interesting photos of the route along Fairview with some issues being highlighted in this Twitter thread...
Jesus, complaining about a fully dedicated cycle lane already and it isn't even open? The whack of privilege off this is insane.
Or maybe with the amount that's being spent on the entire project, some of the design issues could have been handled better.
That can be subjective.
The complaining about the rumble strips for example, they are right beside a bus stop so they are there to slow down cyclists, it is a safetly feature for pedestrians as well as cyclists.
It has level changes yes, so what? This is for commuting, its not a stage on the Tour De France.
It's got a level change that'll unseat an unaware cyclist. Saw the ramp the other day myself and noted it. I wouldn't complain about it myself, but if I was cycling down there with my kids, I'd definitely be telling them to watch out for the ramp.
Are you sure? I think that they changed up the inbound and out bound recently enough, so looking at that picture, the nearest two lanes are inbound, the farthest two are outbound, so those bollards are just protecting the bus lane at the built out bus stop.
EDIT: Yeah, you can see it on the new map of the works here.
Unless you are hammering it on your bike, it would be hard to get unseated unless the bike was super stiff and there was serious speed involved. It is also marked with different colour concrete and tarmac, it's not exactly hidden.
Joey's alumni up in the house 🙌
Here we are now!
Did u go to the reunion recently in clontarf castle? 25 years for my class, I'm abroad now but would have went if I was home maybe.
I am the same as you, abroad a few years now but I get back plenty for visits. I am from Marino so I walk past the old war ground frequently. Joeys has a special place in my heart, plenty of great memories and trips abroad with Cristy Oonan, god rest him.
Sorry, our nostalgia is dragging this off topic!
Didn't know Mr Oonan was dead. Lovely bloke. I always speak French with a thick dublin accent because of him!
Yeah, you're totally right. I'm just overworked at the minute, and taking pics/posting without full thought.
He passed a few years back, saw Mr. Barry passed away recently as well. I struck it lucky with some of the teachers while I was there.
Some of the local councillors posted about this a couple weeks ago ...also, there's a month's notice on this, just how much more do you need?
Thanks yeah. These are good pics of the "pitiful" trees. They really do look pathetic. No offence trees, sorry.
Apologies, I realized after I posted that my pics didn't show the trees I criticised.
Ah crap no. I hadn't heard. I had him for inter cert French, history followed by civics (which became double history).
As a teenage metalhead, I had longish hair and I remember Christy dragged me out of the desk once by my hair and I think I was given a few digs in the arm but I can't remember what I did. Ah, good times!
RIP Christy!
I was a metaller with long hair and he dragged me out by the locks a couple of times
Ah they were the days! Kids these days don't know what they're missing!
They don't look great but they are still alive, so that is the main thing I would say.
Any would have been nice. They are stuffing sheets of paper in the door all the time but this was not mentioned.
When I mentioned it to the neighbours, none of them knew about it either.
Month's notice?
I think you might be getting confused, it's definitely two days notice only, notified yesterday, starts tonight at half 7. Over the last few weekends, various roads have been closed for the same purpose, but again, only with the minimum of notice.
You can see the timeline on DCCs twitter account here.
In fairness to them, there was notice at the start of the entire project that there would be road closures, but even so, it's mad that they're doing it with such short notice. I think putting that notice out on a Monday would be the bare minimum for non emergency works.
You need to be more proactive about looking at information about the closures, and speak with your neighbours more too. The closures are all on the website, which you should be reading regularly.
This closure will reduce the overall closure time as they can work a lot faster on the junction at the top of East Wall road.
There's rumble strips along the section close to the old tram shelter, just passed the wooden bridge outbound. No issues with it myself. Can't see why it would be an issue along here.
But as mentioned, it might have made sense for the fence to be on the park side of the trees. But I realise not all the fence was replaced, so probably more about keeping the original line intact.
Just going back on that Irish Cycle comment on Twitter. That fence is part of the boundary of the park and I'm pretty sure if it is not protected is actual part of some visual aesthetics for DCC public realm or something.
Every other year, a worker comes along and painstakingly wire brush cleans the crap, then paints the whole way along Fairview Park to keep it in order. I doubt it could be moved.
These works are not hanging around and sticking to their schedule, even if it is not perfect in the communication. In fairness they just need to get the job done. Let them at it and we will have finally a great facility to get in and out of town, while greatly improving an area that needs the investment.
