I went into a very quiet shop in the city recently, a shop that you seldom see any customers in. They were selling 500ml bottles of Coca-Cola for 2.99 € and not only couldn't the fella working there speak English, he also didn't seem to know euro coins very well.

Prátaí have opened permanently at the bottom of Shop St, opposite Taaffes, in the doomed unit.
Only noticed today that the terribly named boutique 'Bowling and Market' on Middle St has closed down.
Is Taaffes not on High Street ?

€4.50 for frozen chips with a sauce in Supermacs. Wouldn't have an issue with paying an extra couple of euros for homemade chips with decent sauce.
Good quality stuff, and they've an established following online having done pop ups and a food truck for some time. I'd have no issue paying it every once in a while if I was so minded.
There's a fair few steps between planning granted and cafe opening.
Including the potential loss of the city's only Brazilian grocer.

Collerans butchers (as in the butchers from Collerans) have anounced they're reopening with new owners in a different location. Details to follow but from what I've heard it's in the city. Hope things go well for them!
Seems insane to me that the freehold of Collerans will be sold, and presumably bought by an investment fund. Who will buy it with borrowed money on the basis of being able to repay the borrowing due to the rent that they'll be getting for the unit. Which means that they'll rent it out to the highest bidder and the only ones who will be able to afford it is some outlet of a multinational chain. And so little by little we sell off our country and watch as our towns and cities are turned into multinational blandness to such an extent that every "High Street" looks the same.
No way! i bet they will have a drive through coffee shop to tap into the success of the pink van in moycullen.
Happy enough at the decision. Wetherspoons has its place, I think it'll mostly be encouraging students out who may have been drinking at home otherwise before heading out later.
Enjoyed a few cheap drinks/food in Wetherspoons myself on many an occasion, but it'd never replace an actual "out" venue for me personally.
Kind of "Catch 22", do you want to deny the rights of the owner of the property to get the highest price they can when they sell it?
