Best Van to convert to Camper in 2023

Overature

Hi all,

Looking for recommendations for a high top vans to convert in to a camper. I'd rather a low roof van but they seem to be almost impossible to insure so i'm looking for a hightop short wheel base as I want to be able to park easily enough. Looking for something 10ish years old for a couple of grand. Was thinking of a Sprinter or Ford Transit.

Any ideas welcomed!

A VW crafter is probably the best for conversion and general reliability. Short wheel bases aren't to common but they all have either a high or a very high roof.

Renault master is another popular one.

I'm not sure why you're finding it hard to insure, should be straight forward enough I'd have thought although probably not as a camper.

You can insure low top vans by joining the motor caravan club of Ireland. They have an insurance scheme that covers it. We got a VW T5 converted to a campervan a few years ago and got our insurance through them.

Thanks yes thats a nice one. For the insurance I meant it's hard to get private insurance on a van if I am not driving it commercially.

If I were going for a Renault master - I would try to get the Nissan NV400 version. Better build quality and QC.

To my knowledge the only thing Nissan designed specifically for the NV400 is the front bumper, they’re all built in the same factory by the same people using the same parts.

Yep we have Masters and NV400s in work, they are the exact same van. As are the Trafic and NV300.

We have a lot of trouble with them BTW, although they do get a tough life with us.

I have a SWB low roof Transporter insured with them, so can concur.
