Any animal that come in get dosed virtually straight away. Then the animals I buy are usually poor weight for age.
When buying any animal it's about the net margin, the gross margin has to allow for that. Ya the Jex cross is hard to make money out of unless you buy them cheap as yearlings and they an consume a significant amount of feed.
Yes as I tell any lad dealing with Friesian's you have to carry to finish. On the other hand they are cheap to get into. If you are need mk way you just need to carry them to finish and buy in younger.
If you had to you could go back to calves or weanlings. Going back to calves would save you 6-800/ head in replacement costs, weanlings about 3-400 per head.
I had this discussion with a neighbour selling stores lately. He sold nice Friesians year and a halves for about 450 kgs for about 750 euro after transport and fees. His fear of carrying them was he would have to wait for his money too long. As I explained it's only for the first year after that you get paid yearly

With the fresians. It all about time. Let them grow up first no need for much nuts. It's the last few months they stop growing up and then they grow out.
Massive difference in the breed of fresian.. the soft one is as good as a Angus. The hard one is a loss maker.

Friesians(28-30 mths) very easy to finish off grass - no need for meal. Turn out March & kill in June. Fr. approaching slaughter weight making €2.50/kg in marts. Can buy same yearlings at €2.10-2.20/kg. Can't go wrong with them.
The wet week ahead should soften the store prices in the Marts.
I think the last week or so the prices were not as hot as they were in the marts, sure the marts will always put up there best prices. Factory pulling quotes also. Most were 10 cent less last week. Not sure what they are offering the week ahead.
Factory quotes in the midlands went back up 5 cent last week.
Friend of mine buying circa 400-450kg U grade heifers since the beginning of Feb in two local marts 4/5 in each matt each week. The week 27 was the dearest so far, about €60 a head of the first week.. then last week he bought 20 heifers, he tells me they are €20 a head less than the first week in Feb, back €80 in a week.
I well believe it. I seen the same myself.

I sold a few bullocks (and a surprise heifer) out of the shed in Dungarvan this morning:
LM, 555kg, €1,510 (€2.72/kg)
LM x 2, 495kg, €1,260 (€2.55/kg)
HE x 2, 450kg, €1,050 (€2.33/kg)
AA, 535kg, €1,390 (€2.60/kg)
And what I thought was another bullock til one of the lads at the mart pointed our his lack of jewellery and gave her a heifer number: HE, 445kg, €1,090 (€2.45/kg)
Fairly happy overall. I'd like to have let them back out to grass but I've 30 yearlings half in/out at the moment and another 5 store heifers still in the shed. And I'm fed up of scraping the cubicles/yard where they were since 1-Nov!
They got 2-3kg of barley/maize/soya/beet-pulp over the past 5 weeks and it seems to have put a nice bit of shine on them.
What are Os and Ps at at the moment? Didn’t start feeding yet but might go earlier if the price is good.
Just going thru the figures this evening. The AA and biggest LM bullocks left nearly €500 each after them but the HE pair left barely €100 each. I must check the purchase cost but after that they all got the same feeding over the past 18 months.

555 kg LM would be 700kg+ LW( 375 DW) by August @ 4.6 base he make 1800 euro. I actually expect him to make that in early July.
The 535 kg AA would generally finish fast. He be 650 kgs (LW 340 DW)by late June. At a base of 4.7 with all bonuses he be making over 1700 in the factory.
They did well enough considering the only got ration for the last five weeks. I expect that the mart weight for them are fairly good as you were posting before 2 pm. But they would still have lost 30 kgs compared to fresh weight
Is that €500 and €100 the difference between purchase and selling price or is it after feed/costs etc. ?

After all costs based on average purchase price across 42 calves 2 years ago. But I’m not sure of specific purchase cost for these bullocks as calves. Could have been €150 or €200 so some variation in overall margin

Going on a 48 percentage killout of mart live weight some cow's are 100e less at the mart than factory at 4.40 factory price
Anyone issues getting cattle off. Have a couple of pens of cattle gone in the last 6 weeks or so no issue. Getting it difficult to get the last pen off. Was hoping to get them of this week but been put on hold and told might get them off early next week. I am small finisher about 60 head a year. I am sure it's just some scheme to keep a lid on the price
Seemingly, In light of dwindling supplies, some factories have dropped the number of days killing each week for the next few weeks. Holidays for Easter will see days dropped in a few weeks time, with some “down days” also for this week and next. Energy costs mean factories need a certain level of cattle throughput to cover costs.
