I didn't know this when I bought FR heifers 2 years ago. I paid €250 for a free martin that would have made €5 in the mart. Maybe the seller made a genuine mistake, but maybe not. She's still here and I'll try fatten her and sell off grass in June/July. She'll just about cover costs at that stage. Kinda takes the gloss off the few quid I made on cattle sold in the mart yesterday 😀
My cows are just gone under the 3% protein. Ah well, happens most years when we're stuck inside.
On a brighter note, calf prices seem to be strengthening. Giveaway season might be over hopefully.
Got 70 each for fr bull calves recently
Got 60 last week for a month old. Feels better than a fiver at 10 days.

You’d of been better off getting 5/10 euro at 14 days than 60 at a month …calf would have 90/100 euro of milk alone drank

When we get a fine few days we will all forget calf prices and low protein and be glad to be farming out in the field under the sun.
And money is not every thing. 5 euro for a calf at the mart sickens me off farming. Would rather 60 any day. There will be milk and money made the day after we die.
From a financial point of view you are right of course. Drinking about 20 euro per week.
Do you just need to go in heavy with feed in parlor to get over this period. Protein that low suggests lack of energy, are yields holding steady or increasing?

I'd be more interested what's happening on my farm than belittling my neighbours....but each to their own
Long term forecast looks dire, I'd be putting them on to a 28% nut with soya/maize top of the list for ingredients you'll screw them if they need to do another week inside and the energy/protein levels in the diet aren't good enough to compensate for your silage quality

Not belittling anyone. You misinterpreted me. I have great time for my neighbour and am always learning from him. He's putting in a bigger effort than me is all. But sure if you just want to get in a dirty dig at me then that's fine too.

Ya, on 5kg of 18%. Trying to use out the sh1t at the back of the pit isn't helping. Never even heard of a 28% nut. Forecast looks better here this week. Fingers crossed.

Wouldn't be man for blowing steam myself. Dumped calves last year at 5 euro and it was grand. Laughed at my father falsifying birth dates and getting "big" money for calves.
Then I heard about all these dead calves and such horror stories. I'd hate to think my calves end up somewhere like that. A lad paying 40 or 50 quid might have more meas in the calf.

No more due to nitrates …..they were great way to keep money together but profit was little to none ….fr bulls all sold from 14/22 days this spring from 5 euro to 95 …no corners cut with colostrum or dates etc bar one bunch all sold to repeat customer

Ok. That's your opinion. Couldn't care less what his protein is tbh. Hardly bothered about my own not to mind his.
Was just making the point that on/off grazing is the right thing to do for performance but I couldn't be bothered at the moment. My cows are content but not milking great and I'm ok with that on a short term basis.
