That's a pity. Hefty increases too. If they had stayed at MUP I might have bought a few in between trips up North. Not now though.
I remember just before MUP came in they were selling xmas themed boxes of 12 Crafty Beer for €15
Madri isn't just brewed in the UK, it was conceived, designed, brewed and most of all marketed from the UK. it has a tenuous connection to a brewery also owned by Coors in Toledo, south of Madrid but that is the only Spanish connection. Nothing wrong with that per se, and they never overtly lied about it's origins but it shows the power of image and marketing that it has become the fastest growing beer in the UK by volume and value since late 2020.
Beer drinkers are mad for Madrí — but how Spanish is it? (thetimes.co.uk)
In comparison, Estrella Galicia is a genuine Spanish beer and is absolutely lovely - 12 bottles for €18 in Tesco (with clubcard)
If you like it buy it the price is good.
It does illustrate another problem brought about by MUP.
The retailers can't discount stock that is nearing bb date.
This may lead to less choice for the consumer especially in smaller outlets.
If shops find themselves stuck with lower sales volume beers they may decide to stick to the mainstream brands.
Brewed in uk. No thanks.
My go to for nice and cheap and nice !! Is the Lough gill range in Aldi. They are white cans with either orange, yellow or green markings depending on the flavour. They are all really really tasty.
They used to be €1.80 but I think are up to €1.99 now. Same brewery do a range in super value that's €3.50 a can.
Alas the Crafty range in Lidl have all gone up in price. The 4.5% Pale Ale which was €1.79 is now €2.29, same with the 5% Lager.
Pics, address and sleeping patterns or GTFO!
Last I checked Lidl have Crafty Lager (500ml 5%) for €2.00 and Crafty IPA (4.5% 500ml) for €1.80. And they have Crafty Pale Ale (6% 500ml) for €2.40
They're all decent and all priced at MUP.
My prices could be out of date though because I haven't bought alcohol down here since MUP came in. I've been going up North. 5% 440ml Kronenbourg for like 70 cent a can all year round. I have a shed full of the stuff
Sorry i'm no connoisseur, carlsberg, bud, molson for me,20 bottle pack on offer a lot of the time around 21-22 euro mark.
so what is the best beer that's available permanently at or near MUP?
A lot of bottled beer available all year round for around a euro a bottle anyway.
That's priced exactly at MUP. I wouldn't buy just-out-of-date beer for full MUP. Sitting on a warm shelf for 6-9 months. It may be fine to drink but just on principle I wouldn't buy it. I know they can't discount below MUP but surely you can buy something in-date for the same price.
Not sure if it's nation wide or not but Madri Excepcional 4 x 330 pack reduced from 8.99 to 4.80 in Tesco Coonagh, Limerick. BB date on them is the end of the month. Not the nicest beer in the world but not the worst either.
Sorry about the picture being on it's side, not sure what is going on there but you get the idea.
The Dunnes drink offers in alphabetical order
you'd have though MUP would mean the supermarkets can absorb any increases, but I guess Heineken want their cut of the excess profits MUP was designed to create.
Heineken Ireland increased their prices in the past two weeks, supermarkets are passing on the increases
Thanks for the heads up. Not very patriotic of me but I'm heading up on Friday. It's well worth going for the wine deals
Lovely in marmalade 🙂
never tried Whiskey on toast before. is it nice?
maybe mix some in with the eggs when doing French Toast😋
Dunnes
Paddy Whiskey 700ml
€22.10
(ideal for a toast on Friday 😊)
Oh look,it's a MUP-what a bargain!🙈
You have to factor in the "Oh look it's on offer" crowd who never follow prices and don't realise they are getting ripped off anyway.
There's probably a fairly large segment of shoppers who just habitually buy their 15 pack of Heineken every week in the same supermarket and don't pay a huge amount of attention to the price so the supermarkets are happy to cream another euro or two from them each time rather than always aggresivel target the MUP price. Its frustrating in that the MUP price is a rip off to begin with and supermarkets are actually charging even more on to of it.
It's similarly priced in Dunnes Stores regularly:

At least twice since Christmas Lidl have sold Heineken at €3.39 per litre which is the MUP minimum price and now they are selling it for €3.53 per litre coming up to St Patrick's Day.
All perfectly legal and above board but you'd need to be up early in the morning to keep up with them and the other retailers.
Only seems to be deals on spirits now because of MUP. Surely that's nonsensical.
Any going to pick some beers up for this weekend.
Lidl 15 cans. That's the best Ive seen it in a long time.
Supervalu
I'm surprised that the shops don't just keep booze at rock bottom MUP prices all year round.
powers three swallows - €30 o'briens (€37/38 in other stores)
crested - €25 Dunnes / €26 Tesco
jameson black black barrel - €30 Tesco / Dunnes
Hi this has started til 19th. Available for delivery rom tomorrow 15th.
Flew to England during the week. Litre of Bacardi captain Morgan or Smirnoff all €13. I nearly shed a tear for the good old times before the government ruined everything.
Bushmills 10YO €30 in Dunnes.
