Hi,

Relatively aware of the process with buying from Germany but was wondering if buying in NI is any different considering the brexit/EU thing.

Looking at a Glock 44 in Antrim for example.

Standard procedures apply?

Buy/deposit firearm and get serial number.
Apply for licence here as normal quoting range membership for the pistol.
licence granted (all going well).
Can I just rock up to Antrim to collect forearm and drove home or do I need to apply for an importation licence through the DoJ online?
any customs/vat implications?

Few extra bits you need to do - mainly get an import permit and possibly an EFP

Apply to the Department of Justice for an import permit (takes about a week, free service)
Apply for a EFP (European Firearms Permit) the Gun dealer in NI can/should be able to do this for you, you need a sponsor and cannot do this yourself.
Once you have the DOJ import Permit and the EFP, you can go and collect directly.
Go shooting and have fun :)

You may find a dealer that will bring the gun to the border for you and do a handover, or they can ship to a ROI dealer (at a cost) which saves getting the EFP..

One slight correction there, European Firearms Permits(EFP) are issued by the Guards here, they have to be issued by the appropriate body of the state in which the applicant is resident, so for OP not NI. You only need to ask your firearms officer about one once you have your licence.

Then with that EFP and other docs you talk to your NI dealer and they will help you apply for a NI visitors permit, which allows you to possess the specified firearms in NI.

Once you have that then you are essentially licenced for that firearm in NI, and can go and collect it from the dealer there.

Having done it this year myself:

First ring dealer and buy the gun. Some dealers will not export to south. Don’t be a tyre kicker. Have cash with you ready to go but before you close the deal tell him will he cover the 16£ for the PSNI visitor pass for you and be your sponsor for it? Show him you mean business. Do it now if you’re going to do it and quick while the north is still under eu law.

Get the invoice from the dealer. Sign it yourself too and send a copy to gards. Keep original. As it shows you paid for it pre the Windsor agreement.

Licence granted ….You will now need a euro firearm pass. Go straight to your supers station. They will give you one for free for all licences you have so bring them with you plus a passport photo and ID. Mine I got on the day but I’m persistent. If not a week tops.

Next an import permit from the DOJ website (use the “in EU form” not the non EU form unless you like paying taxes. again post Windsor agreement you want proof of purchase). Send to DOJ with copy of your licence on both sides.

Once you have that back ring your dealer and tell him u got licence and you need the visitors pass. Email him copies of your licence and Euro pass. It takes up to 6 weeks for visitors pass to come back from PSNI.

Then you can hop into car and collect it. Bringing all documents with you.

Lastly off to range regularly, fire a few shots and end up selling it for a SIG or S&W 😉

Paddy in Harbour House sells the 44. Unless you're saving a lot on a NI deal, it might be a simpler option for you.

I also recently traded him my K22 x trim. It was totally mint. Not sure if he still has it but it would be a great buy. Only reason for selling was I just wanted a ruger mk4 22 45 tactical instead.

Keep in mind that if anything goes wrong later on and you had to bring or send the gun back then crossing borders starts getting complicated again. I found that with a .40 I bought in Germany. I'd only go down the firearm import road if I was saving a good bit or I just could not get exactly what I wanted here.

Very worthwhile things to consider alright. The saving on the 44 was about 250e based on Paddy’s €800 price here.

abut I’ve bought slot of items for my 10/22 from paddy already so decent to deal with.

Im looking at that GP K22 now. Haven’t heard of them until today!

One thing about the GP is that it is awkward to disassemble (or rather reassemble) and clean. Also limited accessories on offer. It is the same size and weight as their 9mm though. That's one of the reasons I originally bought one.

The Glock, well it speaks for itself and it resembles the G19. Bits and pieces are readily available. However, on-line seems divided regarding accuracy. 250 cheaper in NI seems a big difference. Worth some admin hassle alright.

EU Firearm passport.Apply promptly for it too! They can be issued in some districts at the speed of glacial erosion on the landscape. I put in for renewal last June, and got it Sept! In fairness to them, more a shortage of civilian staff handling the paperwork than any malice on their part.

Also in fairness to both AGS/DOJ that they offer this kind of paperwork for free. Most German States charge between 50 and 70 euros for inport/export certs and charge 50 euros for the Firearms passport. They cant get over that we get this for free.EU equality for all!!!

I'm using the K22, as good as any of the other target handguns in the same price range. No trouble striping it for cleaning. And now available in different barrel lengths.

And I've had them all over the years.

That’s not it. You will pay the dealer in north a transport fee if they export at all plus the southern dealer a handlers fee.

How much will it cost you in petrol/diesel, tolls etc? + time to travel up North & back (travel cost I usually work it out at my hourly rate at work x time it'll take)?
