Ken's whole report on sport yesterday was top stuff!
The Columbus egg story is exactly the sort of nonsense I sign up for 😂
I've listened to a considerable amount of coverage of the Linekar thing across a wide range of podcasts with contributors from multiple disciplines and backgrounds.....but Ken shyting on about it for 30 mins is by far the highlight for me 😂
i was watching it last night and when it happened it was the first thing i thought of haha
Ken is gonna explode tomorrow. Ederson cleans out yet another player. Doesn't even get a yellow. And then Werner gets booked!
Ten minutes?
We're veering towards becoming the OTB thread, lads. FFS!
I think you, Ken and others are reading too much into what he said.
Comparing how the British gov want to treat migrants is similar to how Germany began to treat Jews in the 30s.
Well he didn’t show it was accurate actually. He referred to a comment made by Braverman at another time to ‘cultural Marxism’ and used that to claim her language was akin to Nazi Germany.
Firstly, the right in the UK and US often refer to cultural Marxism so is Ken saying that all such references are automatically similar to Nazi Germany?
Secondly, it wasn’t at all clear to me that Braverman referred to cultural Marxism in the context of the immigration bill, and therefore Ken’s use of it seems irrelevant to Linekar’s tweet.
Thirdly, does anybody really believe Linekar was thinking about Braverman’s past reference to cultural Marxism and how that interacts with language used by the Nazis when he fired out that tweet? Of course he wasn’t, it was a pretty lazy response that obviously falls foul of Godwin’s Law.
Even Fintan O’Toole in today’s Irish Times criticised Linekar’s reference to 1930s Germany. I think it’s entirely possible (as I do) to agree with the general point he was making while also believing his analogy was cheap and unhelpful.
Your argument is with something the other user hasn’t actually said
Whether the statement is helpful is a different question than whether the statement was accurate, which is what Ken was discussing. And yeah, it was pretty accurate ("bang to rights", as Ken said). And as Ken also pointed out, Lineker likely chose that example because that's what the Brits are obsessed with - that he could've chosen any number of other examples, but that the fetishisation of WW2 history in Britain means that people basically know fück all about any other branch of history. That was the one Lineker reached for, because it's the one they all always reach for.
Also, no-one loves diving into the details of a thought more than Ken - wouldn't at all apply the "if youre explaining youre losing" thing to him in that capacity. He could've made the point significantly more simply (cause again, it's not a difficult point to make), but that's not how Ken rolls. He was positively revelling in getting to talk about one of his favourite movies in the process too.
It was pretty interesting and appropriately contrarian for Ken but the phrase ‘when you’re explaining you’re losing’ came to mind. The point most people were making wasn’t that the comparison was necessarily wrong, but that it was unhelpful and detracted from the point Lineker was trying to make, and gave the Tories an avenue to attack him. Nothing Ken said altered that in my view.
He justified it pretty quickly - it wasn't a difficult statement to justify to be fair, as Ken made pretty clear - he just loves to dig into those historical comparisons and swim around in them for a while. Once he gets started on history in any context, he's always gonna natter away for a while (and it's why we love him!)
I thought Ken spending ten minutes trying to justify Linekar’s reference to Nazi Germany just went to show that the analogy was ill judged in the first place.
They did mention him in their list of 'thank yous' the other day alright at least.
Yep and it sounded like he has little interest in doing anything outside of family stuff at the moment. Maybe rather than the longer players chair eps, he'll be back as a contributor once the Ireland games start up again
He was on Tommy Tiarnan last night.
Well he had back surgery and became a parent in the past year so could just be doing a bit less media work temporarily
Somebody mentioned it a while ago, but I do find it a bit strange the way they haven't mentioned Richie Sadlier in a good while.
His last time in the show was August last year, I think.
He still has Second Captains mentioned in his Twitter profile.
Ah deadly, thanks a million! I totally bypassed that one somehow.
Would love to have been at that lock-in the night they left Newstalk (Ok maybe leave before the drunken gibberish starts)
Going by the tone of those tweets Horgan put out about it I'd say he was like Henry Sellars at the end of the night.
Ep 2580, the 15 minute one from 6/7 March. Just listened to it there, would honestly love to hear the 5 of them chatting away about it for way longer.
Great lads.
Which pod was it where they talked a little about their newstalk departure? I somehow missed that bit, but would love to go back to catch it again.
Would love to go to one but they aren’t great as a listening experience imo
only thing I know about Paul flynn out from his Dublin career is that he loved wearing clothes that were way too tight for him when head of GPA.
think the side effects are noticeable in his GAA punditry
Andrew Mangan of Arseblog, used to do a podcast called the 738am podcast. He had episodes interviewing Ken, Eoin, and Murph around 2015/2016.
They go into it a bit.
Jarlath Regan also interviewed Ken at least on his podcast but think there is a paywall to get his archive.
This is a response to someone asking above for more detail on their departure from Newstalk, thought I was quoting them but messed it up somehow.
I'm not a huge fan of listening to live shows for most podcasts as the hosts usually end up trying too hard to be entertaining or funny (like Murph yesterday) and the guests can try too hard at times but Second Captains live shows are generally quite good
My thoughts as well. I really like Murph and he can be very funny but he needs to pull the handbrake at times and come in at the best times or when he has something properly good to input, like Ken who waits until he's asked for his opinion and then has something deadpan and often very funny to deliver.
Murph interrupting everybody because he's so excited to be in New York is annoying to say the least, especially when he's laughing at his own interruptions!
It was interesting to hear a bit about the background around their departure from newstalk, especially not being allowed back to clear their desks. Sounded like they didn't see that instruction coming.
They've earned a trip out of their hard work. Though I don't think I need to hear again how AMAZING New York is.
Exactly! A little treat for themselves with some work thrown in.
The 10 years is quite an achievement and hats off the the team. I'm not sure what the point of the NYC visit was except a jolly for the lads, it didn't exactly make much difference to the pods. Caitlin is fantastic but it would have worked as well over Zoom or whatever. I guess I'm just not a fan of the live shows!
