I wonder how this will work out for him

TBF, we do tend to go along with whatever the various authorities tell us to do and rarely object strongly. I’m not sure the poster is confining their opinion to transgender issues, I suspect it may be more to do with our general tendency not to stand up for ourselves
broad Sweeping statements much?
you know nothing of the people laughing at the Burke’s, lots of people don’t give a toss about things like transgenderism coming in not because they are sheep but because they realise it’s not something that a) affects them anyway so are happy for people to be allowed live as they choose or b) they understand. So aren’t so ridiculous as to have a strongly held opinion that some thing they don’t understand should be stamped out often based on the beliefs of some religious people.
Been co-educational for last 50 years or so.
Here's a few other people to be admirable of for standing up against authority. Heroes, one an all, eh?
They could have all gone on to do great things but sadly mammy is destroying their future before they’ve even had a chance! She’ll die eventually and they’ll be left completely lost as to what to do because they’ll have no careers left unless they’re self employed and their options are pretty limited because of their behaviour. It’s actually very sad.
2 of them have proved they cant function in their chosen routes of employment. Another created a fictional job for herself.
This begs the question; what if it were a single sex school, say boys only, and a pupil wanted to identify as female?
Move to the convent
I think someone mentioned before that 2 have distanced themselves? I don’t know about all of them or who’s missing from the outings but there’s one pretending to be a journalist who was removed from the CMO thing and she seems off the wall but there’s 10 of them. Are they not supporting, no room in daddy’s car? I’ve no idea?
I've always felt that people, mainly men, who work in the religious industry, priests, rabbis, imams etc, should be questioned on their beliefs. Basic questions really that they should be able to give yes or no answers to. EG do they believe that God created woman from the rib of a man? My experience of them however is that they don't do yes or no or plain speaking in general.
Society are busy living their own lives and are tolerant to how other people want to live theirs. If you want to waste your life by protesting and trying to prevent others living how they choose when they have no affect on your life whatsoever, you go ahead.
Doesn't beg any questions in relation to Enoch Burke as it's not relevant to his situation or this thread.
But if Enoch had handled this properly then this is exactly the conversation that would be ongoing.
The pupil in question identifies as “they” so they are neither male or female or they are a combination of both and can’t choose one over the other is what I understand? If in a male school and want to identify as female then I presume they would have to go to a co Ed or girls school. I think it’s between the parents and the school?
Not really.
Had Enoch been capable of normal behaviour then the question would not have been about how a school should handle a scenario involving a transgender student , it would have been about the extent to which someone could claim a "religious exemption" from rules/guidelines derived from the Law of the land.
The only real question potentially arising from the original issue is whether or not someone can refuse to comply with a request/instruction from an employer on Religious grounds or at least the extent to which someone could use Religion as the basis of their non-compliance.
I do think that actually getting the legal position clarified would be very beneficial as it seems that there is a bit of ambiguity around where the limits are around this.
How far does it go?
Depending on the specific religion involved there are potentially multiple things that people might seek to refuse to do in the workplace that are perfectly legal under the law so it definitely needs to be clarified , but Enoch Burke and his family are not the ones that are going to facilitate that happening.
A link posted the other day stated that Burke was 21 in 2010 so he's likely 33-35 now.
I'll be 35 at the end of the month. I find it incredible that someone my age with the life experience he has (highly-educated, has been employed), can come across as such a robot and still be so subservient to a parent. How can someone so intelligent not engage in any critical or independent thinking? They really do seem like cult members.
It is precisely this that people of wary of when it comes to homeschooling. I'm not aware of the ins and outs of homeschooling in Ireland but I assume there's a curriculum to follow and official exams to be taken. Evidently, the mother is a good tutor and an intelligent person if she's managed to educate children, several of whom have gone on to obtain PhD's and Masters', to such a level.
But, clearly, you can't be a functioning member of society if your life is so carefully controlled and dominated from an early age. You can't put a price on socialising with other people, no matter how intelligent you may be. It is equal parts disturbing and depressing that these intelligent people's potential has been restricted through no fault of their own.
No it's not because no boy at WHS wanted to identify as a girl so it is not relevant to his case or an imaginary case where he followed procedure.
So if a boy or a girl in a same sex school wanted to identify as neither, would that be relevant here?
Well a child did want to identify as non binary in WHS and the school said fine. So in that sense ya its relevant that this happened.
here? no. this is about burkes reaction to a reasonable request.
Anyone know who was the guy ranting about " stop transgenderism and ban it now" in the background of Sinead Hussey`s report on the 6 o clock news on RTE last night. She appeared to be reporting from outside Birds Eye Foods in Longford
You may admire them, many wouldn’t, but I suspect you just picked that collection of low hanging fruit to get a reaction. It is possible for most intelligent people to admire someone, without necessarily agreeing with them. I’m not saying I admire Enoch Burke, I certainly don’t agree with him, but I wouldn’t judge anyone harshly if they said to me that they admire his resolve.
Agree with you and was thinking the same thing this morning, they are not spring chickens and have being to college and have to seen the outside world, but still Mammy rules their minds, they have not done any of life’s basic things like sport, few beer as teenagers, chasing skirt, and having friends, what are they going to be like in 10/15 years when. Mammy gone, very sad in a way.
I picked a collection of people who were "standing up to authority" in a very similar way to the Burkes. You know I don't admire them and you know no-one else does either. So lets not pretend that there's anything admirable about the Burkes behaving in the same way.
That is a subjective point of view, and again you are missing the point. You don’t agree with him, neither do I, but that does mean everyone agrees with us.
Could you imagine what that family could achieve if they channelled that energy and resolve for good, like housing rights or the health sector. It’s just unfortunate for them that their focus and resolve is applied to causes which are at odds with the rest of society’s viewpoint.
How would they do good in housing or healthcare ?
If they went into healthcare they would just be one more HSE worker.
It they would use their skills at kicking up a fuss by breaking the law and do more damage than good to their cause. There is nothing exceptional about them other than causing controversy.
People are acting like they are the first ever posh family in Ireland to have a solicitor and a teacher in the house.
It's reasonable to judge people on their actual actions, not some idealised potential that they have not demonstrated. One would be really stretching the concept of "admiration" if one had to imagine totally fictious actions to admire them for.
Applying focus and resolve for good causes doesn’t necessarily mean breaking the law. There is something exceptional about them, they do not give up if they feel they are right. That’s not to say they either shouldn’t give up, or they shouldn’t be made to give up, but they are the exception.
I know of one case of a girl attending a single sex Loreto convent school who transitioned to male at about 15 or 16. The school handled it beautifully, accommodating the student's needs with no fuss or drama, and no question of changing school.
Judge away, as I said, your opinion like everyone else’s, is subjective. But don’t think that your opinion is the only right one, you are in Burke territory if you do.
