The City Council annual service delivery plan for 2023 has been released. This is a document required by the Local Government Reform Act, 2014 which the council must release on an annual basis. It outlines the plans for the coming year over a wide range of topics.

Below are the transport, mobility and accessibility related items and the required "achievement". This is 20 pages of content condensed down to the basic bits. I've left out stuff like grass cutting, fleet management etc

BUSCONNECTS - Cross city link - Hearing, tenders and detailed designs completed
Ring road - Participate as part of the steering group
BUS CONNECTS: Dublin rd - Public consultation, submit to ABP
Finish the Martin RAB replacement
Parkmore Access Improvements - Bus priority designs completed

Access control points (Kissing gates) - Modify these on Active Travel schemes (but the Council previously stated that there were none present on any "Active Travel Schemes" so fk knows what this means
Parklets - Install some prototype parklets - @what_traffic will be happy to hear this, its years overdue
Road safety plan - Publish a new road safety plan
Speed limits - Implement new limits including 30k limit
School streets - Publish Scoil Iognaid report & progress designs at multiple other schools
City center pedestrian area - continue fixing surfaces
Junctions - Design and implement safety and mobility improvements for pedestrian and cyclist safety & mobility

The County council have their own list of projects that they are working through. I posted them previously in the other thread.

You have the like of

Local Link routes (rural PT)
Provision of footpaths in towns and villages. In fairness they have been plugging away at this for years and have made great progress
AT infrastructure is lacking on all towns & villages but thats a symptom of many decades of prioritizing the car. Where new roads are going in they look to be doing much better on this front
Greenways, they are slowlyyyyy moving these along on the Galway-Dublin & Galway-Clifden routes

But again, their priority has always been the car. As a result you end up with a motorway costing 500 mil (Tuam to Gort) and you still need to spend another 100 million to bypass the likes of Moycullen, Claregalway etc yet the opportunity is passed up to improve things when they do bypass (loughrea, ballinasloe, oranmore Tuam, Gort etc)

National level programs will see things improve e.g. for PT & AT, but until there is a widescale change in attitude you're going to continue to see the car as the king and all improvements will be geared that way. Makes it good for going for place to place, but not so much for healthy towns and villages with good infrastructure and accessibility

absolutely zero interest from the county council in building bus stops, they're more than happy to take development fees from houses built in barna and moycullen yet neither village has a sheltered bus stop ...

They need to apply to the NTA for that. The council don't have much say except to put forward stop locations. Only way that changes is by contacting your local councilors and pushing for it, they then bug the council who bugs the NTA

I agree 100%. Weirdly just over the road in Furbo - I believe Udaras na Gaeltachta built a fine sturdy bus stop decades ago now (over 20years ago for sure) right outside the offices opposite the Connemara Coast here

Not surprised either. Agree re Oranmore. The 404 does not even serve the village itself. Would add a STOP at Railway Station and Rocsam as well. If doing that would need to get frequency of bus up though to every 15 minutes.

You might be right, are there more plans for student housing in this low density retail area. The Railway bridge will be a good linkage for that. This area of town is ripe for regeneration. It is underutilised with huge amounts of surface car parking

It might as well be on it, because there is now no scope for widening the road at that spot.

Considering the size of that site before they started building, it’s crazy it was allowed so close to the road, my point was the lack of future planning! 🙄

Galway City Bus lane network is short 20 meters since the Garda HQ opened in Renmore.

I think OPW have to take equal blame here as the City Council though for allowing this to occur.

I say when the Skerrit Roundabout is removed - it can be remediated somewhat.

I seem to remember reading/hearing somewhere that the Council didn't have any input into that because a Garda station and some similar buildings have very limited planning oversight.

The cities bus routes are to be reviewed by the NTA next month, likely as part of the GTS review

maybe im missing something here, but i would have thought the cross-city link should have gone all the way out to knocknacarra ? It seems that there is no plans to do that ? Fundamentally there isn't any plans to ease congestion for traffic going to and from knocknacarra in the pipeline for the next ten years ?

The cross city link is to connect the SQR to the Dublin Rd in terms of bus priority infrastructure

WDR absolutely needs to have bus lanes added and has been mentioned in the past. I think its a safe bet that it will end up in the next version of the GTS. The space is there, the demand is there, just missing the infrastructure

Bus lanes on the WDR are at least a decade or more away unless serious money is thrown at it. Case in point, the Dublin Rd dual bus lanes are not expected to begin construction until 2026 to open in 2027/2028 and those are fully designed and about to go into planning approval.

For what one gets - I doubt it would even pass as serious money to get the WDR done. I would say more has been spent on the Ring Road to date than would be required to get WDR done to same standard as SQR/BOD; bus lanes and cycle paths. From what I have seen over the last few years; money is not the problem - the just cannot execute on delivery. Don't have the staff or expertise. It was costed by Council at 10million back in 2010, even if that doubled it would still be worth it (and still be cheaper than what has been spent on the Ring Road to date)

I always bring tea and water and a sandwich with me also, but, sometimes it would be handy to be able to buy a bottle of water.

I can see the vending machines lasting until they get broken into and then they'll be taken away again.

I really find it difficult to believe they can't find anyone willing to run the service, or shock horror, Irish Rail running the service themselves.

The same as off peak now I'm guessing, maybe 1-2 mins off the time. It won't save much as its only a 4km bypass and is bookended by RAB's so at peak times, the lower demand arms will dictate the throughput of the higher demand arms.

You could see this for years at the likes of the Briarhill RAB (the old name escapes me) where traffic coming from the airport/Carnmore rd flew through and dictated the throughput of the dual carriageway coming from Oranmore onto that RAB. The throughput at that junction is now balanced better with the lights. Not saying they should have used light controlled junctions on the Moycullen bypass, just highlighting the impact of the RAB choice

A bit of snow or cold snap and there is no buses, that will make people give up the car....at least the private comp continued to run.

BE super quick to cancel, city direct not much better but at least they ran their service to get people around last Thursday.

Another example today, id say everybody took their car if they had one. Cold wet misery they ain't waiting for no bus or take their bike.

Switch ain't gonna happen this decade with that carry-on
