I wonder how this will work out for him

The damage done here is that in addition to be homeschooled from the accounts that I've seen here the family has isolated themselves from everyone outside of their family. From what it sounds like evangelical churches in the area of reached out to them for contact only to be ignored. So I'll agree that they are not a good example of the inevitable outcome of homeschooling. They seem more the inevitable result of enforced total isolation. It certainly explains why they seem to be almost entirely incapable of engaging with society in any meaningful fashion.
yeah, it is the burkes that are the real victims in all of this. what is your opinion of their behaviour at court yesterday?
It’s home education coupled with social isolation that I’m totally against- not home education per se- I know a family who are Christian evangelical and home school their kids and limit social contact to only the other nutters in that sect- that’s not at all healthy and it goes on far more than is reported.
If you’re home schooled but are also encouraged to interact with other kids who aren’t in things like sports etc then that’s certainly better- it all depends on the motivations for home schooling in the first place is my view. It’s an odd choice in these modern times
It's not the home schooling that's the issue - It's the isolation and indoctrination that has occurred with the Burkes which was partly facilitated by the fact that they seem to have almost never left home until College stage.
I know lots of people that were home schooled , both here and overseas but in all cases they were also involved in sports and clubs of various kinds , like Scouts etc. so they had lots of regular interaction with loads of different people from lots of different backgrounds.
Perhaps had the Burkes had the same kind of varied experiences growing up they would be better placed to be able to cope with people with different viewpoints to theirs.
Most of the posters throwing out the fake outrage about heavy handed Gardai would be applauding them if it was certain other sections of society showing blatant contempt for court.
Well it's not like a divorce is an option for him anyway. Imagine that tribe turning up at the circuit court.
And more eyewear
Where next for this story? Are there more court appearances in the pipeline?
He'll have snow tomorrow
He might call in sick.
I have friends that homeschool but the difference is, they are not religious nuts and have socialised their children well and they are empathetic and open to others opinions. The Burke siblings don’t seem to be able to think for themselves and are unable to function in a normal society. They are not open to others having opinions because they’ve never been allowed to have any of their own. You can see it very clearly when Martina is preaching and they’re all obediently just bobbing their heads in agreement.
Don’t be daft, there was no assault. They were asked to leave, they didn’t, they had to be manhandled out of there and so its their own stupidity that made her end up on her arse. There were school children visiting the courts and witnessed that disgrace - they care about nobody but their own pathetic agenda - madness
Naturally enough this area of cultism and indoctrination is unknown territory for most of us.
Mr Garde appears to understand many of the issues involved but his attempts at intervention came to naught.
I don't know where it will all end but end it must.
I found that moment really telling . The mother is spouting some rubbish or other and they all waggle a finger and nod . They are like puppets on a string who have no thoughts of their own
Enoch being driven to school by his dad and dumped out in the cold is really pathetic to see
Grand and I agree. Which is why we should cast a cold eye here on posters who seem to think that home schooling is a problem and iirc, implying in some cases saying that it should be banned. Quite disconnected.
any comment on the burkes behaviour yesterday?
I don't think there's any point in trying to argue or posit the theory that the father isn't every bit as deep into everything as the mother and the rest. He may be less vocal when it comes to how they all shout on the street, but he's definitely as big a part of everything. We even know from the reports yesterday that Enoch was shouting to the guards to let go of his father. That only happens if the guards had to restrain the father.
Nobody just goes along with their wife and kids when they're at the level they are. He's as much a believer and as strident in what they're doing as the rest of them.
Enoch Burke is a man of focus, commitment and sheer will. A rare thing in keep-the-head-down-Ireland. I'd say it's his innate Anglo-Irishness.
Whilst "banning" home-schooling is an over-reaction I do think that the Burke situation perhaps highlights a need for greater oversight into the socialisation aspect of children being home-schooled.
A huge part of the development of children comes from their interactions with others and them learning how to operate in varied environments.
Home-schooling potentially removes a major source for this developmental stage so there should be some kind of oversight to ensure that those opportunities for mixing with peers outside the family unit are being provided via alternative methods.
They gave up on the Dail protest and they will eventually give up on this at some stage. Maybe move onto something new. As the mother gets older, there will be less of this nonsense.
He didn't give her a woeful shove, that's for sure but he did give her a gentle push. His push alone probably wasn't the reason she fell over. It was a combination of factors.
Birds of a feather stick together. There is some sort of Catholic Home Schooling organisation who believe that the modern primary curriculum is too liberal etc. So they have meet ups and all mix together. This is socialisation.
The bottom line is that parents are the primary educators of their children, not the state. So the likes of above can do as they wish as long as the three 'r's are covered. And rightly so, otherwise the state would have too much power in the eyes of many.
Yep, I agree with you there. But that doesn't change the fact that he did give her a wee bit of a push. I'm not saying he was wrong by the way. I'm just not blindly denying there was no push because the Burke's are unpopular when clearly it can be seen that there was a bit of a push. Did it cause her to fall, I can't say for sure but it might have played a part. Or maybe it didn't.
I'd like to have seen the reaction the Burke's would get off the Authorities in other countries if they kicked up a scene in court like they did Yesterday.
If they were under 18, they'd be taken into care at this point. They have no life experience as a result of the sheltered and dictatorial upbringing. Would they even celebrate a Mayo All Ireland win? Time will tell...or will it?
The first time I heard the father speak was yesterday. He muttered something about not being muzzled. It was clear though he just didn't want to appear like the odd man out and that his heart wasn't in it unlike mother who let's the head back and swivels her arse a little when she's roaring!
I’ve looked at it yet again: I do agree with you, she did get a small push from the male guard- I think that’s indisputable.
Ultimately as I said earlier, it was in her power to leave that area in a more dignified manner and she chose not to- the result of her actions is what we now see.
To me it looks like:
As cracked as he is I agree. If more people had his commitment when it comes to protest then maybe they wouldn't be getting f-ed over with rent.
Dunno though women/people like her seem to get crankier/angrier or both as they age so I reckon the fun may only be beginning.
It’s not socialisation if you are just mixing with like minded religious people with your exact beliefs! It’s no different than the 12 Burkes sitting around a dinner table! Socialisation is mixing with others with different beliefs, religions and opinions and being open to them and tolerant.
Unless that belief is that men can't become women, of course.
Also means that the vast majority of people in the world, past and present, have never socialized, according to you.
