Interesting comments by "religious mediator" in this Sunday World article:
He [Mike Garde] said he had been contacted around five years ago about the Burkes by other religious people in the west of Ireland who wanted to open a dialogue with them.
The Burke family are described as Evangelical Christians but Mr Garde said they are not a member of any church.
“The family are not connected to any evangelical church and do not communicate with those around them in Mayo. They are just an own-brand closed family group.”
Other Evangelical Christians in the area had been hoping to open a dialogue with the Burkes a number of years ago but these attempts were unsuccessful.
“Over the last five years I’ve been getting calls from the Mayo area and have been trying to assist them because they’ve found they can’t connect with the Burkes. We suggested they invite them to a meeting to discuss things but they’re so cut off that even family members can’t even go to the property to talk to them.”
Mike Garde described the Burke family as being like a closed system.

Yes in-camera court is legal. It’s largely reserved for sensitive cases (such as child abuse, rape, crimes against the state) but in this case I suspect it’s because Burkes are using media attention to further their agenda.
To be fair it was someone else who maintained they knew people from Castlebar and that the burkes were respected locally

So any future cases involving the Brady Bunch could be held in camera with just the defendant/appellant, together with a "sanitised zone" imposed outside the court building? I am aware of in camera sensitive cases etc. but wondered if other cases could be included such as this one.

Well, he was let out because the judge didn't like him being supported by the state (i.e. in prison) and getting his full pay also paid by the state at the same time. I believe that I heard that his firing isn't final until potentially Easter I'd bet that they aren't going to jail him, at least over the original contempt of court charge, until after that.
He was also released because the school was closed for winter break, so he didn't need to be jailed to stop him from attending the school. Once the school was back in session and he resumed showing up the school specifically asked the judge to not jail him again so that they could hold their disciplinary hearing. So instead of jailing him the judge went with the €700/day fine to accrue until he purged his contempt.
So it wasn't simply a matter that it was too expensive to jail him.

When I was a young fella embarking on a long family drive, the words you most dreaded hearing (usually from the ould gran aunt) were... "The first joyful mystery, the Annunciation of the Lord to Mary...", and with that any thoughts of an interesting trip went out the window to be replaced by 15 rounds of sheer fcuking misery. I'd imagine the Burkes would revel in that kind of trip. Although I've a suspicion the Da is just playing along and wondering how the fcuk he ever ended up with this lot.
