The government are currently investigating increased parking, congestion charges and speed limit reductions in order to help the country meet its climate goals. Looks like a split in the coalition is emerging over the proposals, which are likely to be deeply unpopular. Do you see anything of the proposed that could be considered politically palatable?
I get the train to work, I walk to the station from my house and from the the station to work. 40 mins walk in total. Everyday. It rains a lot.
i don't represent everyone in the plant milk lycra cult, but most people don't drive to the city centre in dublin for work etc. surely it's the motorists pushing their lazy car lifestyle on the rest of us in an undemocratic manner by clogging the city with fumes and traffic?
You're not a delivery driver or a car driver so how would you know this? I listen to the points made yesterday by the head of the road haulage representative group...
it might come at a shock to you that the measures being discussed will mostly only be applicable to dublin and maybe a little to cork
And what about the rest of the country? Are we supposed to cycle 30 miles to work or walk a couple of hours just to get there in the pouring rain?
well you better get out training in your beloved lycra then
70% of the time? It simply doesn't. At all.
Insults and abuse all the time but apparently its other posters “getting heated”. This site is a joke.
Well then get the government to give options such as more place so rent in Doblin, more places to buy in Dublin better public transport for commuting into Dublin. Until this is done there should be no charge
Can we send him to China or India where there’s real work to be done on climate change?
not 70% but closer to 60% in the likes of Galway. Dublin gets significantly less rain than the west.
The greens love making it more expensive for the working class. Joke party who don't live in the real world.
I live in Dublin and my office is 27 kms from my house. I can get public transport which would take 1 hr 50 of on time Or I can drive and take 1 hr. Plus I have 2 kids in creche that need to be dropped off on my way.
there's work being done on public transport and there are no plans to bring in any congestion charges yet, although i'm sure if you sold your big house in meath you could buy somewhere in dublin maybe in coolock near mine, i'll show you around, you'd probably need to downsize though.
What have the greens made more expensive for the working class?
you'll be delighted to hear he's going to china next week
Is he cycling there?
Well we already established earlier that Galway has about 230 days with rain a year. So c.60%. Noting that a day with rain is one with 1mm of precipitation over a 24 hour period. So that could be a heavy rain band in the middle of the night and bone dry for the rest of the day. It does not mean that it rains solidly 24 hours a day 230 days of the year.
If you're getting rained on 50% of the time you walk to work etc, you must be a very unlucky person. I live in Cork, which has quite a few rainy days, and use the train/walk to work. I could count on one hand the number of times I've got wet in the last year. The odd very bad day I replace the walk with the bus.
Can we please drop this ridiculous vegan/Lycra/cult name calling BS. It is not conducive to a reasonable discussion and at best is childish.
Public transport is mostly used by the working class, those who can't afford to run a car, or a second car. The Greens have brought the costs of public transport down significantly, so they have actually done some good work for the working class.
I have to travel from Limerick to Cork for work 3-4 times a week
They are not discretionary journey as I couldn't do my journeys on public transport
Was working in an essential service during the lockdowns and it is a requirement of my job to have a car
It's funny on the one hand eamonn ryan wants 20km less speed limit on all national roads while he was spouting on about 30 min less bus journey from Limerick to Cork is the motorway (if it ever gets built)
These new proposals will increase the amount of time I'll be forced to be away from my family due to work travel if they ever get passed
Last election we got 1 FF, 1 FG, 1 SF and 1 GP TD
I've written to each of them to say that my families votes are up for grabs and if this goes through my family won't be voting for any government TDs
I lived in Cork for years, the rainfall in Cork isnt comparable to Galway, the west is WET. Hell the rain in Kerry and Clare is way worse than Cork. It rains on average 100 more days a year in Galway than Cork. Also Cork is the only place in the country that has decent public transport outside of Dublin. So, maybe have a dose of cop on and think when people are telling you that they live in places that have practically no public transport where it rains most of the time they probably do.
You said you use the train so you do have PT. 🙄
Look, if people can't cope with rain they probably have bigger issues and shouldn't live somewhere that clearly doesn't align with their expectations.
Well until both public transport and housing to rent and buy catches up and actually gives the commuter a valid alternative to driving then no charge. Who said I have a big house in Meath? Your showing you hand there now not everyone is in a mcMansion who lives out side of Dublin ye clown.
It isn't as simple as that. There are a cohort of cycling evangelists who do have a particular view of the world. However, the core message being put forward that we need less cars in the city centre is absolutely correct.
From my perspective I see both public transport and walking as deserving of significantly more priority than cycling. In fact I would put electric bikes and mopeds at an equal level to cycling because the former offer options to those who are mobility challenged.
To put it another way, yes to more cycle lanes, but much more work on bus-only lanes and priority measures for public transport while making it much easier to walk around the city centres.
Obviously, those are only my opinions.

Pedelecs do have the same priority as cycling already, they're legally equivalent, and you wouldn't be able to separate the two anyway.
There wont be charges any time soon I'd imagine but if you're keen to see public transport improvements just make sure you vote Green in the next election, the other parties aren't interested.
We can all see traffic conditions around us. BTW, how did you work out that I'm not a car driver?
Why don't YOU tell us EXACTLY HOW MUCH CO2 YOU HAVE SAVED doing the right thing with your solar and your hybrid first?
"when i travel between 30-40km/h, it is simply not safe to do this speed on a poorly designed cycle track that is shared with pedestrians, joggers"
I do agree with you on the quality of cycle tracks/lanes, but this is a remarkably similar argument to that from motorists who complain about cyclists on the road.
Not a chance, not while they are putting the cart before the horse they are the only ones looking for charges now instead of fixing the issues that will actually make it easier for people to leave the car at home. I also hate the fact that they don't show any leadership. How about starting with banning all car parking spots for all public sector employees. I also hate the hypocrisy of Eamo heading to Hong Kong for paddies day no doubt using a car to get to the airport , a plane to fly there and then a car over the other side. These meetings could be done via zoom and his physical presence is not needed in Hong Kong.
well no one said any carts were being put before the horse any time soon, it's just a model to work towards
