The government are currently investigating increased parking, congestion charges and speed limit reductions in order to help the country meet its climate goals. Looks like a split in the coalition is emerging over the proposals, which are likely to be deeply unpopular. Do you see anything of the proposed that could be considered politically palatable?
Are there currently any plans to restrict or ban anything? These are just logical goals to work towards along with public transport. They're hardly going to send memos about building a new society with even more cars and traffic.
Perhaps not globally. But it makes a huge difference locally. During lockdown the difference locally with no cars was huge.
I can't stand the greens. Fcuking pricks!
The gobshites should be forced to produce figures which show how they are going to meet climate targets.
None of this vague rubbish like "we need to move away from fossil fuels". Give me facts and figures. How much closer are we to saving the planet with these changes introduced.
Farmer doesn't like the Greens. Well I never.
It's a question of moving people more efficiently with less pollution, cars are the least effective way of transporting people in cities and cause massive congestion.
What difference did it make? Lockdown stopped people going to work, how much did we have to borrow? As I said we could all turn the engines off in this country and walk everywhere and globally we aint going to change anything. As long as the top 5 keep going. So why are we as a people being hit in the pocket for making trips that simply cannot be done without a car.
So we should just not bother our holes doing anything?
So we should ignore the EU climate targets we've signed up to?
Sure, f**k it, you're probably right! We would better off with our little fat kids being driven everywhere and a crap public transport strategy that only serves the poor and the elderly.
Emer Higgins FG. She was on Morning Ireland this morning
We absolutely should do nothing if the "doing something" thing negatively impacts a large number of people making their lives worse.
We ignore the eu when it suits us, we should do so again.
Local pollution, sound and emissions. Congestion destroys the air quality locally.
How does better public transport and less traffic make someone in Dublin or corks life worse you mad yoke?
Perhaps this the solution to meeting our emissions targets. Make people work at home again.
We should be building better transport systems and trying to make electric cars less expensive, why should we pay more and more when no matter what we do we have zero influence on what is happening globally its just punishing people for decades of governments mismanaging the countries finances with regards to public transport. As I said a lot of people would use it if was there but its hard to swallow this narrative that you will be punished for driving your car in order to save the globe when this is a a blatant lie and should be outed as that. Its a simply an additional tax.
look i've taken more buses than you've had hot dinners, its just shiite no getting away from it
Alright pal we don't all have whatever issues you have
do you even use it?
And overtaxing people destroys people living conditions and mental health quality
Yes I have used buses regularly throughout my life
A quick search shows that BusConnects seems to have been delayed to the area because of road widths being unsuitable for busses passing each other. But this is the Maynooth to Tallaght route so not sure why the other services are being delayed. Anyhow, I think a rollout is due shortly (according to a quick search on my phone).
Which of the proposals being discussed are negatively.impactjng people and making their lives worse?
How would they make people's lives worse if they were to go ahead?
Like when?
You do know that when we "ignore" the EU we get handed large fines which increase when we don't pay?
do you own a car?
its so bad, i had to give it up and cycle instead
if it was better more people would leave their cars, driving into town is mental, people don't do it for the craic
then not having a car means you are stuck in the city, want to go somewhere else in the city, its into town with you for a 2 hours journey there and back to get anywhere
30 mins in the car
its the reason you don't see eamonn ryan on the feckin bus and hes in a postion to use it, into town and out, he gets feckin drivin on the **** days
he aint no trevor seargent
Maybe we need to ban cars of a certain size then? Seeing large SUVs in small city streets is infuriating, the smaller families have got the larger the cars. And if we are serious about climate change, we really need to put a limit on the number of kids we have, and perhaps encourage certain other countries to also have smaller families - there is nothing that generates carbon emissions like a child (over their lifetime).
We also need to stop all frivilous travel, hen and stag parties off to Vegas or Spain, and obviously end the practice of flying over to the UK for a match at the weekend.
Well all that's for another thread. The proposals here are to move people around the city more efficiently by improving public transport and reducing car reliance.
We should be building better transport systems
We are!
and trying to make electric cars less expensive,
How do electric cars reduce congestion?
The only thing electric cars help is the motor trade. Their production is hugely damaging to the environment.
why should we pay more and more when no matter what we do we have zero influence on what is happening globally its just punishing people for decades of governments mismanaging the countries finances with regards to public transport. As I said a lot of people would use it if was there but its hard to swallow this narrative that you will be punished for driving your car in order to save the globe when this is a a blatant lie and should be outed as that. Its a simply an additional tax.
Yawn!
Congestion is only get worse. So I guess it's coming either way. There's a finite amount of road space.
Well I'd argue our neighborhood should more than exceed any such criteria for the necessary 2km total (over two distinct routes) of pedestrian/cycle routes that would be necessary to link residents here up to Portmarnock and Malahide. This would in turn extend connectivity to include the coastal cycleway that links Portmarnock to Clontarf. Sounds right on message really.
There's easily about 500 residents in this collection of 6 estates.
My thinking is, if even 2km of such facilities is too much to deliver in a decade, then I'm not sure that the will to match the words with action is really there.
I can't understand how Dublin has no school bus system.
People won't be able to afford EVs so less cars..
This is a tax on using a car from the green narrative of saving the planet. yawn all you want the fact is we could all get out and walk and then Ryan will want a tax on every step taken. It has been seen down the years that when people move away from what is a nice tax revenue government shift the narrative (TV license for example) for no other reason than they just want more money from your wallet to allow actions like this clown ryan fly to Hong Kong for a good auld jollies for paddys day, I mean the phucking neck on the phucker preaching and then doing that. Let him cycle there and take the lead or even better tell him to use Zoom to meet the people he wants to meet.
500 people 2k. Seems a low threshold of people.
There is also a finite amount of sh1t the general public will take. Give the alternitive and lead by example dont phuck off to hong kong on a very expensive juncket when this meetin could be done via zoom and tell everyone else to stop using cars.
And growing. But sure whatever. That response was as predictable as the sun rising in the east.
Crack on. You seem to be enjoying yourself.
So you're obviously unwilling to participate in a mature, fact based discussion and just wander off moaning about Ryan 🙄
So what in your view is "the alternative" to trying to curtail people driving into a city because there simply isn't room for them all and single occupant journeys are not good for our carbon targets?
