The N59 upgrade.

I heard a story a good few years back that an upgrade to the N59 was being held up on account of populations of Freshwater Mussels(Margaritifera margaritifera) that were likely to be destroyed.

I see that an upgrade was in fact completed a year or so between Maam Cross and Oughterard.

Is this the stretch that involved the Freshwater Mussels?

If so,how are they doing since the works were completed?

There was an awful lot of work put into the bogs either side of the Maam Cross section

I never found out what it was in aid of exactly.

I wonder are these gravel sections you are referring too part of the ATTENTION PONDS - for the run off of rain water from the road itself. Could it be stored, treated and and released here?

I know for sure Section of N59 at Derryhoura and towards Oughterard is problematic in terms of construction for the Freshwater Mussels. It can be done without affecting the water course - it just will cost far more to mitigate that a typical road scheme.

Ya they are very big gravel surfaced area's for such a purpose - am curious now myself whats the purpose

What about those 3 or 4 green pens just off the road.

About 3 metres high and say 40 by 8 metres long and wide ?

They go below the ground level and I see circular concrete drains going into them?

Any idea what they are for?

They are planning a windfarm in this area. Just where the new road finishes. Planning ref 2360051 Galway Co Co.

Another beautiful untouched area possibly goin to be destroyed..

Yes, I'd never stopped to think about it before, and always thought that the way Connemara looks right now is its natural state. Until someone recently pointed out the dense vegetation and trees on the island lakes which aren't grazed by sheep, and suggested that this much more resembles what an 'untouched' Connemara would look like, rather than the bare hillsides we're familiar with.

There are plans to put really big turbines off Sceirde Rocks; about 10km South West of Mweenish Island(Carna); if that goes in may get other Off Shore farms nearby which will be closer to Roundstone/Ballyconneely. On a calm day/ high visibility - one can see Sceirde Rocks easily from higher ground in Erris Beg (like here: https://goo.gl/maps/4UqDki327yH63vK88)

I don't understand the issue of windfarms in the area.

If you are in Aran and look north, the bare denuded hills from Ros a Mhíl -> Bearna are dotted with white rotating turbines, and you see the mountains beyond. Nobody has a problem with the views there

Disruption of in shore fishing grounds would be the main concern rather than visual for locals in South Connemara I reckon, as you point out they already have a huge amount of turbines in there locality already

Contractors for Irish Water. It was supposed to be fully resurfaced in February, once the temporary surface had been allowed to settle, but that didn't happen (surprise, surprise)
