New year, new thread. Good luck all with calving 2023
And then there were 2
5 calved, should be a couple more this week then a break till mid March.
How much is the postage for BVD samples now?
Anyone use the digital stamps?
I think the digital stamps work out more expensive. I put 2 N stamps on the bvd sample envelope. An odd time I'll only put one and they still get there
Almost half calved here
26% in here. First one landed the 1st but the bulk have come in the last 4 days. Still chasing my fecking tail
2.40 for 1 to 10 samples....... I got a fair shock last week when I dropped of my first 2 last week.
Doesnt your co-op/mart not take them for free?
I'd have to drive a half hour to my nearest mart or co-op so that's a non runner. As bad an all as the 2.40 is in postage the price of diesel for say a 60km round trip would be far more eye watering 🤣🤣🤣
Fair enough, didn’t realise how handy I had it!!
First two on the ground here.
calved them outside. Not too often you can do that this time of year!
First calf of the year was standing looking at me on the woodchip pad this morning. He had sucked and was dried off. Out of a second calver red whitehead. I didn’t think she was that close.
Great to get them like that, what breed is the calf?
Can't beat outdoor calving for cow, calf and farmer. Do you calves much on the woodchip pad
By the Shorthorn bull I bought a couple of years ago.
I normally try and let them calf in the calving pen at this time of the year only because it has lights and electricity if we need a Vet.
EKB bull out of a wee whitehead cow.
9 calves so far. 6 of them calves outside.
last year every single calf got a scour. Haven’t had one yet.
What bull nice calf. Sorry didn't read on..
To answer your original question. My stock bull is by YKK - Ballyart Lucky ET. I bought him as a yearling in the Autumn of 2020.
1st two calved here. Twins off AAx cow, 9 days early, used Powerful Proper on her. Very small calves but alive. Bull calf is twice the size of the heifer calf.
2nd then this morning, another AAx cow 3days early, Tomschoice Nation heifer (used sexed). Fine lump of a calf and up and going as soon as she hit the ground! That's her 8th calf and we've never had to lay a hand on her for any off them. Watched the whole lot on the camera during a work meeting. Hope the rest are that easy!
Once they’re alive and thriving. Often found the bull twin to be the bigger too
Bit of burst last 48 hours – 6 out, all fine will get few pics up.
6 year old Si Cow did splits on slats last ~ Thursday night, noticed Friday pm. She’s due 10th Mar, lifted last few days – no luck (presume nerve damage, 1 back leg stretched out fully behind her), vet induced her yesterday 3:30pm, I thought she dilated as felt crubs about 6am this morning, now can’t feel anything and feels like she closed up – if that’s possible? Waiting on vet to call, cow is definitely gone, just trying to save calf.
Shes gone off the grub – doesn’t take them long to go downhill when they can’t get up, vet initially said keep her going for another week.
Open for any suggestions...
Stupid question, how do you breed pedigree animals? Have pedigree cow with pedigree bull?
What are the pros and cons of breeding pedigrees?
Second calf on the stand off pad this morning when I checked them at 5am. A pedigree heifer up and sucking when I arrived. I'll throw up a picture later on.
Straw looks good, how long do they keep it fairly clean?
Have you someone at home if things not going well on camera while you're at work?
No suggestion tbh apart from maybe giving her ivy as a last result to fill the stomach if she'll eat it. Best luck tho 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Pedigree calf this morning up and sucking
Yes pedigree bull and pedigree female. Supposed to get extra money for pedigree stock
There's not much you can do for her if she won't eat but the vet might try pumping fluids into her stomach. It's unlikely she has closed up but your vet could always section her save the calf.
Do you have a high percentage of difficult calving?
