I came across some road infrastructure plans for Dublin which never happened, THANKFULLY. I thought it would be interesting to post here and see what other projects people can think of.
I only watched the first minute!
What makes you think he wasn't big into that all along? 😉
That video is 56 mins long.
Looked up William A. Thomas. He's into the Virgin Mary now.
...and one minute they're saying the middle of Connemara, the next it's beside Knock Airport?!?!
The article is packed full of howlers.
"The infrastructure is good with two national roads (N5 and N17)"
Both of those are amongst the worst national roads in the country, especially in 2000 when the article was written.
Michael O'Leary was also totally against Metrolink in the 2000s despite it running passengers in and out of the airport he operates in his home city. He's a strange man.
I think they ran out of small obscure airports that would pay them to land a few poor tourists into their remote district.
These small airports meant that a twenty minute turnaround was not only possible, but could be even less because they were the only flights in or out that day.
this was back in the day when Ryanair flew mostly to smaller/obscure airports where they were often the only major airline present - presumably they wanted something similar in Dublin. They seem to have moved away from that model in recent years.
Managed to read half of this and actually scrolled back to check the date... not April 1st wow... can't read anymore
Given the outrage of just a few locals over noise at Dublin Airport following the opening of the new North runway, can you imagine the reaction to regular flights into Baldonnell? The extended centre line of the main runway is over tens of thousands of suburban houses.
Michael O'Leary wanted the Baldonnell airport to increase choice and lower costs.
This is fallacious, as far as passengers are concerned, because the increased choice and lower costs are solely for the airlines, not the passengers. Can you imagine an aircraft on approach to Dublin negotiating the cheapest landing charges before the airport is selected?
It is not anything that helps the passengers.
Awful idea. Belfast has two crap airports instead of one decent one with a good selection of routes. So lots of people travel down to Dublin where there's more routes and lower fares.
Imagine having to travel right across the city to catch your onward flight? Nightmare.
Anyway Baldonnel only still exists because it's so little used. The flight paths conflict with Dublin Airport, the mountains are too close and there's way too many people living nearby who'd be affected by noise.
All to make Ryanair a few more quid? No thanks. BTW O'Leary said that Terminal 2 at Dublin Airport was a white elephant that wasn't needed! He'll say literally any aul' nonsense to get in the papers.
However CIE were never going to admit they messed up with the Harcourt Street Line even in the early 70s. So they planned a busway for it. Serious.
That was the same crowd behind West on Track more or less.
What about a second Dublin Airport at Baldonnell?
Was this a Michael O’Leary/Ryanair idea??
I wonder what happened in 1922 that stopped this plan proceeding?
Answers on a postcard.
Actually, this should a better plan than the existing Metro North/ DART Underground.
First I've heard of this, I think. Anyone else hear of it?..
Plans in 1922 for a central train station on North city of city between Four Courts and OCS, underground connecting lines plus removal of loop line.
Jesus wept. I sometimes think we were lucky the country was broke back then because it meant we couldn't afford to tear up our city centres.
The M6 Galway Ring Road
Too soon?
Cork always did have notions!
Metrolink
1960s proposal for a sprawling American style inner city freeway system through the heart of Cork city. Thankfully it never got off the drawing board.
The Blue Line BRT

It was a marketing stunt back around 2006 or 07 I think. Was for a property website that never took off. They put up fake planning permission signs around various parts of Dublin Bay aswell at the time.
It is a pisstake isn't it?
Tell me it's a pisstake and not a combination of Celtic tiger era madness and poor early 21th century video editing software.
I had forgotten about that.
On their website's Register page, I went from a state of being excited about a new home to being disapointed within seconds...

A rail station at Dublin Airport. The lack of one is a national embarrassment.
