I see two supply lines with no urban settlements screening them and the Russians. Ukraine are going to need to move tons of supplies on a daily basis to Bakhmut.
Unless Ukraine pushes them back, the situation isn't tenable.

What I was thinking about was more along the lines of Kadyrovs and Prigozhin's survivability if Putin deems either of them to be prospective candidates for his job. Kadyrov, like his Father him, is not popular in Chechnya. He derives his power from Putin. If / when Putin leaves Centre stage, and depending on his replacement's attitude to Chechnya and Kadyrov, things could well change for the worse for Kadyrov For sure, Kadyrov has many enemy's back home. But its looking increasingly likely that Prigozhin's star is waning big time. Unless there's some power move by the Siloviki or Military, and Putin gets dethroned, than its very hard to guess what his replacement will be like. Unless his replacement is already being groomed and if there is such a person, it is being the best kept secret in the world.

Watching the latest 1420 videos on YouTube and the levels of brainwashing are chilling. I would say 70% of Russians support Putin and the war. They have absolutely zero levels of critical thinking and just repeat whatever state media is saying parrot fashion, no matter how absurd or ridiculous it sounds.
going back isn't a disadvantage when your enemy keeps draining it's resources needlessly. It's a textbook tactical withdrawal to other vantage points, better vantage points in fact. this is where Russia will be held permanently judging by the struggle for a measly town. Now they have burger hill on their hands. Ukraine will slaughter them if they try advance. those valley heads are fortified and have every square inch of every road into bakhmut zeroed.

Just want to shift away from the war in Ukraine to highlight a typical difference between Russia and China. Far up in the north east corner of China i focused a few satellite pics of the use of the land by both sides. China are using every scrap of land for agriculture while Russia leaves it to nature, zero interest or ability to exploit the land to make a real profit selling to its hungry neighbour.
I've spent countless hours zooming in and out of Russia and going street view. the place is needlessly empty and areas that are occupied are like travellers camps. Rubbish everywhere and everything decrepit and rotten.
Look for yourselves and tell me the Chinese aren't chomping at the bit to race in and claim the land. I know I would.
The topography around Bakhmut doesn't look that bad for the attackers. I think Ukraine are at a far bigger disadvantage now that only a few KM of open country separates the Russians from their two major supply lines.
