Surely when you're buying Midleton it's all about the whiskey and not a box.
For a large amount of people seeking out MVR, it may as well be coloured water in the bottle. It really isn't about the whiskey, at all, for a lot of buyers!
Box makes it easier to store for those who buy it with no intention of drinking it.

I have started buying bottles myself as an investment but i'm pretty sure that the value of future bottles will not be impacted by the box that comes with it.

I presume they'll be appearing over the next two weeks.
Airports are always a good place to pick them up.
And there'll be another lot released in or about October.
Been and gone already in most places.
I personally don't care about boxes one way or the other, but actually special release whiskies - for example from the millennium, or other occasions - which have special boxes or tins do actually command a premium. I'm talking about situations where it's the same whisky inside the bottle, literally it's just celebratory packaging.
I'm with Black Sheep there. If it's purely for an investment, then that's the only reason to keep the boxes. They'll be worth a good chunk less as they'll be seen as incomplete.
Any stuff I've put aside like that goes into protective wrapping, then it's stored on a shelf in my cellar. That way it's fully intact and protected from any possible damage.

IDL really should offer the box and a bottle of caramel water for the bulk of purchasers of MVR to buy to show
There's no doubt that although it's fine Scotches and bourbon that account for the majority of whiskey fraud, if I were buying MVR privately I would definitely exercise caution, even at the moment.
Why?
Because it's mostly not being bought to drink.
I'm not saying get rid of the boxes. I'm saying that the value of the whiskey and box will not be reduced by Midleton changing the type of box they issue.
In a few years time if you have MVR 2023 in the orginal eco friendly box then it will still be valuable. It's not the fact the older ones were wooden that made them valuable.

I like the boxes. I think I've kept one cardboard sleeve ever to keep coins in but other than that they don't bother me.

As expected, availability of MVR 2023 not to be a problem. Just picked up one in Dunnes Waterford. They got 5 in this morning, so there are 4 still available for anyone in the area who's interested. €210.
Yeah we got over stocked of it. In fairness 2020/2021 were rarities seeing as it was the last year of Brian Nation first year of Kevin O'Gorman and it drove demand for people to sit on/collect!
I still have a 2021 put away, but will probably drink my 2023 later in the year, when I've some work news to celebrate.
Keep a sample size of the 2023 so when you do open the 2021 you can compare :)

FYI, 2023 is the 40th year of MVR
The new packaging, creates a new starting point for collectors, just like with the 2017.
The market is flooded with '23's.
Individually they won't be a big earner like the 2009, but they will be worth something as part of a bigger collection.
Long and short of it.. if you have multiple MVR '23s , you might as well crack one open.
It won't be the golden goose that you will retire on.
