Any Irish living in the UK from 1969 to 1999 would tend to have a slightly different take on this....
It’s a recurring problem though among sections of the Irish electorate who are determined to give a poke in the eye to ‘dat gubbermint in d Pale’ regardless. Low turnouts in Euro elections exacerbate the problem, so you end up with the likes of Wallace & Daly getting in. It’s a shame there isn’t some type of recall mechanism for MEPs who go off on ridiculous tangents that these pair seem to do quite often.
What's your point exactly, not clear.
Moscow has a population of 12M and even say if only 10% turned up outside the Kremlin that would make for quite a noisy protest of over 1 million people!
Not sure what the authorities could do about it, there isn’t enough police in Moscow to arrest them all.
Could have a big say on the outcome of the war but won’t hold out any hope Muscovites will get off their backsides to go do it.
New explosions been reported in Mariupol,
Must be GLSDB time again
There are Russian embassies in countries all over the world where Russian citizens could gather to vent there opposition to the war without fear of repercussions.
Maybe look more closely
And going by the number of dropped cigarettes and fires across different parts of Russia, there seem to be a few "orks" in their "god forsaken country" that are doing far more than you or I would dare.
In Russia they just eject and let the plane fly into an apartment block.
Dropped cigarettes should do it alright. BTW why do you keep referring to them as "orks" ?
This. Putin likes to make it look like everyone supports him and his regime - and that seems to be something a lot of people in the west buy. Obviously they can't openly oppose Putin unless they want to end up conscripted or in prison (and then conscripted).
The argument that Russians in the west are free to protest isn't really true - do people think there wouldn't be any potential repercussions for their friends or relatives back in Russia?
So if there's less than a million bad eggs, why don't the 139 million good ones say enough is enough?
Merely aping some of the more simplistic and jingoistic minded locals around here.
Small point, compiling from what I've seen of interviews. Including most prominently British defense minister Ben Wallace(who is remarkably astute). I'm pretty sure the ramping up of shells and ammunition for doesn't need to be a permanent thing for Ukraine. Just enough to wean them off the reliance in the medium term.
I believe ideally what the west wants to do with Ukraine is move them to a more combined arms maneuvre warfare. Something that Russia is absolutely terrible at. What the Russians have is mass artillery and infantry. It's really the only thing they have going for them. It's possible that Russia can outproduce the west on this kind of dumb warfare. So the best thing is to deny the slugfest.
Having superior manpower and **** tons inaccurate artillery means very little when units of Bradleys and Leopards/Challengers with infantry support are rolling through your front lines and you've lost air superiority. Especially if your logistics and command have been scuppered by long range precision artillery. My armchair general 2c.
Do you think 139 million Russians should be out protesting, do you not understand the demographics? 30% are under the age of 16 or elderly. A huge portion of the population live in very rural areas, you wouldn't even know whether they are protesting or not. Then there's plenty out protesting and being battered across the skull for doing so.
This protesting argument to justify hating an an entire people, women and children, old men and women. People against the war, doesn't matter.
I believe you to be a sincere individual but I also get the impression that you are more irked at Russians getting a bad press than you are at the fact that Russians do not appear to be making any meaningful attempt to stop the war.
Not everyone has your Posting style or want to engage in long winded explainations for every single post,
Orcs is a perfectly reasonable description,
Putins Attack On Ukraine -Documenting War Crimes starting on RTE1 now .
I'm just not for xenophobia and small-minded discriminatory language against an entire people. Anyone dancing around that fact with, what I'd consider everyone's favourite word in this thread to be - whataboutisms, are only doing so to cover up a clear calling out of a dark streak throughout this thread.
There's never any excuse to label or hate an entire nation of people. That is Adolf Hitler or Putin territory. People not protesting doesn't give anyone sn excuse to call them inhumane or provide a derogatory label for them.
Backward arse thinking is all it is, there's no dancing around that clear fact.
This Lithuanian (much respected in his own country) wouldn’t agree with you.
Programme on rte right now outlining russias antics in Ukraine. I would imagine your missus is recording it in order to send to update the folks back home.
I don't hate the Russians, I blame them for what's happening in Ukraine.
What's stopping them from standing up and saying no more ,
Absolutely nothing, how do you detain 50,000,100,000 ,250,000 in one single swoop, they can't it's humanly impossible to stop and detain that many people in one go .
Either the Russians are absolute cowards or they all support heer putin and his strongman adventures ,
Surely Russians can see orcs getting slaughtered in there tens of thousands per week and nobody says anything.
I don't buy it
No, she isn't. Her being born in a certain part of the world doesn't mean she is obligated to do something. Crazy talk.
So all Russians are either cowards or support Putin?
So you blame all Russians for what is happening?
Could this be the real reason for the interest in Moldova, the big ammo dump?
This situation, if as bad as it seems, means Ukraine's determination to hold Bakhmut, was a far smarter strategy than the US advisers one of abandoning it.
Yes. I blame all Russians. ALL Ukrainians have been suffering to various degrees over the past 12 months because of Russia's actions.
Oh OK. So all that protesting and everything was just a bit of a fad I guess. Ah well, long live Ukraine and to hell with Russia!
Professor of Russian Literature who doesn't like Russia and/or Russian people being "degraded". Hardly surprising he might disagree; no?
Also somewhat bizarre people are objecting to calling soldiers of an invading and occupying army nasty names: the same invading army which it is widely believed (recently unequivocally stated by the US) to be committing systematic crimes against humanity in Ukraine.
Calling every Russian an orc or whatever else is a little bit less savoury I suppose but when I think about the suffering being visited upon Ukraine I find it hard to dredge up much outrage.
Says it all about who these Russian people are that they would do that to a Holocaust memorial. Disgusting. I hope the Latvians find out who did it and deport them back to Russia since they love their authoritarian dictatorship so much.
