Chinese electric car brand BYD to enter Irish market this year (breakingnews.ie)
It's going to be really interesting to see people going to a Mercedes dealership to spend €100k on a car and also €40k. Great news for buyers more competition will force the field
id be surprised if MSL co locate, or at least co locate with mercedes, they do skoda and mazda too remember.
The Seal is a direct clone competitor to the Tesla Model 3, that will be interesting
No idea on price yet ?.
I think we're getting the atto3, will be interesting to see the prices, presumably 50kw and 64kw models?
UK media are estimating the atto 3 will be £30k. So could be under €40k here which puts it firmly in the ZS ball park space.
MSL no longer distribute Mazda or Skoda in Ireland but I’d agree that they are unlikely to have a BYD outlet beside one of their Merc dealerships
Most likely will be sales online and dealership support.
Mdl may not distribute but MSL still sell don't they?

Couldn't care less about their current offerings, it's the mooted ~100kWh or higher (I can't remember) Seal that is of interest, that would have insane range for Ireland, public charging be so irrelevant compared to now
100 kwh is not much use if your going to be doing 33kWh/100 km, what is the efficiency? Hauling around so much kg will surely have an effect on range, at what stage is the extra kwh's just being used to haul the extra kWhs around? If a person was so worried about public charging a small genset or rex would be better idea.
On the contrary MDL are the distributors.
Atto3 is one of the biggest selling EVs in Australia, and could be a very good car in the biggest selling crossover section - this is more of the Chinese invasion
Yes did I say otherwise? Mdl distribute and MSL retail, msl still retail skoda and they will retail BYD
I was referring specifically to skoda when I said Mdl didn't distribute not generally
I wouldn’t be so sure on your assumption about MSL. They have only a handful of retail outlets and I don’t think they have enough footprint for BYD. Most buyers in Ireland will never have heard of them. MDL on the other hand can easily signup existing motor dealers in every County if they need to. Either way, it should create more competition and choice in the EV market here which is badly needed.
You are assuming that I am assuming :) let's see.
It's a nice inoffensive car on the outside but the inside really is very nice. The screen looks great in its horizontal position but not so good when vertical. They should have just made it horizontal but its a neat idea that it can flip.
I woukd say it will be in the early to mid 40ks here. Its 35k in the UK.
Rte have a piece on this too, and while they expressly say in the article there's no point guessing prices yet, they point out that the MG ZS is €32,000 and that's their target market. I'm going to guess €38,000 ish but maybe rising if the grant changes in July have any impact on its price
Fair review
Seems to be fairly decent. Another good entry that is fairly high spec'd and a good bit cheaper that the established brands.
I prob wouldn't make the swap from the ZS. Although they are very similar, the range would drop a chunk. But the camera is much better.
Saw one near powerscourt wicklow today, uk or ni reg. Looked all right, reminded me of the new merc suvs rolling around
I think BYD could steal some sales with these from MG from the people still waiting for their ZS from MG.
Definitely in the same market as the ZS. A lot depends on how quickly they do get their own models on the road here.
BYD Tang?
86 kWh but the range isn't proportionally higher to say 64 kWh car
It's just too heavy and too big.
BYD are the biggest EV manufacturer in the world, I'd expext them to go hard on their push into the domestic EU market.
I had been research the ATTO3 for quite some time as we had no idea when the ZS would arrive, very favourably reviewed.
Great to see more competition!
*if you include PHEV
That's why I didn't call the biggest BEV manufacturer in the world 😉
Not correct.
In June 2022, BYD Auto announced that it had sold about 641,000 EVs in the first half of 2022, overtaking Tesla to become the largest EV manufacturer in the world.
The company also has an electric battery division, FinDreams Battery, which is the world's third largest producer of electric vehicle batteries with a global market share of 12% in the first half of 2022, and a focus mainly on lithium iron phosphate batteries.
BYD is also the 3rd largest carmaker globally by market cap ($100b) after Tesla and Toyota.
The synergy with being the 3rd largest EV battery company is also a huge advantage. It's manifested in BYD Atto 3 efficiency vs MG4 efficiency. The former is very good the latter sucks.
No one should underestimate BYD. They are not MG (SAIC).
However to succeed in the EU market they will have to a) select their local dealers properly and b) come with a fast quality EU level customer service.
MG sucks at both as per reports from the UK and Ireland and personal experience from Ireland.
I hope BYD will do much better.
MG have been bad, delays aside it was the lack of communication, even to their own dealers, that was really shocking. Brilliant car but I'm not overly rushing to buy another one unless I hear things have improved.
If BYD can just get cars delivered in 3 months from order then they will have that market sown up.
I'd consider it myself only thing off putting is the drop in range from the ZS. But will see once they get here.
