Very violent looking tornado hit Andover Kansas.
Andover was hit by an infamous F5 in the 90's
Some big temperatures early this year, make you wonder what is coming down the tracks.....
It's ironic that the very process that causes the gigantic snowfall in winter caused a strong Foehn setup that generated those high temperatures in Gunma prefecture. High pressure to the south of Japan caused a northwesterly flow over the mountains, with compressional heating on the lee side.
Setup at 1500 local time (40.2 was reached at 1520).
Radiosonde map of 12Z (2200 local time) 850-hPa temperatures. The 40.2 C surface air temperature was recorded at Isezaki, northwest of Tokyo, between the 23 C of Tateno and the 17 C of Wajima. The Tateno sounding shows a very strong inversion at lower levels, not present further upstream in the Wajima sounding. The northwesterly flow over the mountains from Wajima to Tateno cause a Foehn effect inland.
Wajima's sounding
Tateno sounding, showing the strong inversion and subsequent surface cooling during the evening.
Tornado in NL.
Notably cold winter in Oz so far http://www.markvoganweather.com/2021/06/15/sydney-observes-coldest-june-day-since-1899-after-coldest-run-of-may-nights-in-54-years/
Insane footage... I think the glacier collapsed.
Chilly in Argentina
Severe thunderstorm in Corsica yesterday killed 5 people. Highest wind gust of 224km/h (515m) altitude, highest sustained 116kmh. Capital got 131km/h. It caused damage across a number of countries. A really potent and long lasting thunderstorm.
Hail in Catalonia yesterday killed a 1 year old and injured at least 50
A child died in that hailstorm in Spain after getting hit on the head from the hail.
It would make one think of the film "The Day After Tomorrow".
Torrential rain hit the Italian region of Marche. 6 months worth of rain in a few hours, 400 milimetres!
China is having major drought in the south and flooding in the north.
Food shortage here coupled with Ukraine war could drive food prices to extremes.

That's cold!
Extreme weather for the new Prime minister to cope with.
Not precisely weather, but IMO fits here - M7.8 earthquake in Turkey, near border with Syria, both countries report serious damages and hundreds od fatalities. One of the aftershocks was M7.7.
Edit: my mistake - the strongest aftershock so far was M7.5, not M7.7.
Near annual Greek snowstorm. 😞
https://www.rte.ie/news/weather/2023/0206/1354046-snow-greece/
Seemingly they had two more powerful earthquakes M7.8 and M6 not to mind the after shocks ;
Catastrophic, scenes of utter devastation, awful loss of life.
The sound of the earthquake in the first tweet is extraordinary.
From all the footage I've seen you would think the death toll could go into the 10's of thousands. Hopefully when the following earthquakes came most people had left the buildings. Dreadful, will need much assistance in the tough weather conditions. Would imagine the state of the buildings remaining must be very damaged and in a dangerous condition.
Wet and cold in the Persian Gulf end jan / early feb.
All the Turkish leader really cares about is if this will harm his chances of re election. We would never see this level of devastation if the buildings were constructed properly in the first place, but due to corruption between builders and government politicians many were not.
Tropical Cyclone Freddy is currently halfway across the Indian Ocean, having formed off the coast of Queensland, and now barrelling towards Reunion and Madagascar. It's currently a Cat.5 cyclone, though not expected to stay that strong. Even after it weakens, though, it may still be very dangerous to Madagascar due to both winds and flooding.
Records being broken left, right and centre in Argentina last week.
Temps in Buenos Aires last Sunday hit 38.1C, until a cold front from Antarctica whacked them down to 7.8C by Thursday and introduced snow to the lower mountain ranges in the Country's interior with temps of - 4C, both a first since records began.
It would be the equivalent of a recorded snow day in Inverness and the Cairngorms on August 16th.
Great post on how weather temperatures were presented and reported on 6 yrs ago and fast forward to 2022 and adding some drama with red shading to emphasize the temperatures, you would think the 2022 screenshot at glance that there was an extreme heatwave even though the temperatures are much lower than the 2017 image. Pressures on media sources to get more competitive with the competition by looking more dramatic and eye catching and presenting in a more sensational manner as has been much reported on the forum.
Would they not do the same when it’s cold though? Use blue instead of just digits.
The tiny bit of Ireland is still green in 2022! :D
Hope they got out of their cars in time.
Good recap of the freak summer storm that hit the Netherlands on Wednesday July 5th: https://www.eumetsat.int/storm-poly
Storm Poly caused major damage in North Holland province. In the sting jet there was a peak gust of 146kph and sustained 2 hour 11Bft force winds in IJmuiden. Which makes this by far the most severe summer storm ever recorded in the Netherlands.
Some hail in Basque Country recently. :O
Where in Spain is Basque Country? I know it's up north somewhere but not sure where exactly in Spain.
