We then issue a counter statement,[if our orgs could be bothered that is]. That we did engage, but under very dubious choices by the minister, with no accountability on his part as to how he chose the two participants, and the chair. As there was no formal interview, by the Minister's dept in any shape or form bar seemingly political connections in two cases, and being a constituent in one case of the ministers. As these people were also paid monies from the public purse with no effect and two resignations, for sofar unknown reasons...IF true that they did resign as it still unconfirmed!

Then Min Brown has questions to be answered in public and the Dail as to how he chose these people and has seemingly ignored any and all advice of his committee. He cant fob this off on his boss on baby leave either. He has to own this one.

Do the Minister and Company really want to go there?

Yep that's why I was shocked when I heard it. It's all speculation until we get proof it's true but if it is it's turning into some sh1t show

I wonder if we could get a couple of the independent, or opposition TDs, to put a few questions to the Minister, in the Dail?

    Thanks,

Anything in new legislation about banning other types of firearms? Or is it just CF/Sa on the chopping block?

It is just a pity a few more of our representatives are not asking questions of the process https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=677174837502174&set=pcb.677174867502171 I would love to see the response, but probably the same Yes Minister/Sir Humphrey generic answer being regurgitated to everyone else?

On a personal level I have found Minister Browne unwilling to engage on the subject and while relying totally on what was said in 2015 as justification for his actions, he seems not to have noticed the word "temporary" in what was said then?

If he wants to look for guidance on how licencing of firearms can work, he could do worse than the French model. Walk in to firearms dealer, pick semi-auto CF of choice, give SIA number (on-line Govt individual shooter account now in operation, up until last year there was no record of who held what!!!), pay for rifle, walk out of store with rifle under arm. They trust their citizens. We can but dream?

Glad to see finally someone the political world is taking up the hint that Ireland and the USA are utterly incompatible on the issue of firearms legislation[And everything else TBH]. He should also be asking since these people were paid with tax payers money and no process of interviews etc.should the minister be held accountable for these monies?

However,I wouldn't be too happy about going around comparing other EU countries' systems as great either. As no doubt places that have positive legislation like Austria,Czech Republic, Poland, Italy, Malta, would be ignored in favour of places like Germany, France,Greece, Sweden or other less-than-gun-friendly EU states.

The question still has to be asked and confirmed. Are our two proponents off this committee or not? If they are it has thrown a spanner in the works, not to mind there is still about to 8 steps in legislation and process before this becomes law under the president's signature

I have asked Minister Browne if there have been resignations, awaiting a response.

Looks like the rumours of resignations on our side were unfounded,up to last month anyway.

Nite vision, silencers, and where you may use your firearm and for a specific purpose was on the agenda

Not sure where you’re getting the November or December dates from, this is the first post about it that I could find and it’s dated after the 9th of January. They still potentially resigned.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,949 ✭✭✭✭Grizzly 45

You are right there ML. My bad!! Should have checked that this better. Why did I think they quit in December??? Indeed they could have, and here's hoping they did.

There is nothing in legislation before the Dail about banning other types of firearms except for the SA/CF rifles. That said, 100% there is other firearms legislation in the pipeline (I don't know what it contains), it just hasn't reached the Dail yet and I've no idea when it will be published.

Those minutes suggest that there's been discussion on restricting licence holders to certain locations, WTF?

    Thanks,

Make it really hard to get an invite to shoot somewhere new or for a day/ weekend!

  • Registered Users Posts: 549 ✭✭✭Munsterlad102

That was already in the plan of what they were going to discuss. Makes zero sense if a deer hunter would have to amend their license with every Coillte lease they get or for every sports shooter to amend their license for each competition they go to. More sh*te being tacked onto an already stupidly long and convoluted act.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,420 ✭✭✭garrettod

Competitive shooters suddenly restricted to (say) their own county...

Hunters restricted to property within (say) 20kms of their home...

What about farmers who hold firearms for crop protection etc. will they be prevented from taking those firearms off their own land, to say leased fields, elsewhere?

This really has to be challenged, and brought to a halt, before that clown tries to bring in legislation that does some real damage to our sports.

Everyone needs to be lobbying their representative bodies, their local clubs, and their politicans, to get this nonsense brought to a halt.

Anyone reading this, also needs to be helping to make fellow legitimate shooters aware of what's going on, and get them to also take action to oppose this stupidity, through all legal and sensible means. Get it mentioned on social media, at club meetings, on radio, TV, podcasts etc. Don't leave it to someone else, everyone needs to play their part!

    Thanks,

    G.

Agreed Garrettod, we need someone questioning these things.

Between the lead ban and restricted areas, we'll be left sitting at home dry-firing when no one is home.

Who comes up with these ideas and why. It's like they are imagining scenarios and creating rules to prevent them, just to be seen to be doing something.

Legal firearms holders are (in general) law abiding / upstanding members of the community. It seems like we are being hounded and that new laws are being created to box us in more and more, waiting for us to break a stupid new law. It's annoying that they seem to be putting so much focus on hitting legal firearms holders when most of what they fear is going to be done by someone who doesn't care about laws, doesn't care about the sports we participate in.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,597 ✭✭✭Feisar

One of the lads here has, "remember, zero firearms is the goal" or something similar. It's beginning to look like it's true. Our sport just isn't congruent with modern living in the minds of a lot of people these days.

First they came for the socialists...

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,758 ✭✭✭✭BattleCorp

I'm not criticising anyone but ideas like the ones in the last few posts show why all shooters should stick together and lobby together. The semi autos are on the chopping block now. You all know that when they are gone, something else will be next for the chop.

It's grand to say 'I don't give a sh1te about the semi autos, I don't have one' but one day it'll be your firearm or ammo on the chopping block.

I used to consider myself reasonable but all the proposed changes have me starting to get the mindset of the NRA in not wanting to give an inch because the authorities have loads of rules and regulations in place that we obey yet they keep coming back wanting more and more. It's death by 1000 cuts.

Under the proposals it would now be completely illegal for hunters to zero their rifles. It's already illegal to zero a rifle by shooting a target in a field. Now by conditioning the license so that the gun can only be used for the purpose it was licensed for, it would now also be illegal for a hunter to zero the gun at a dedicated target shooting range as the gun was licensed for hunting and not target shooting.

According to the Garda guidelines of 2018 page 24 .

Zeroing is permitted outside an authorised range. Provided it can be done safely.

Going by the wording of the guidelines, it is considered a necessity to ensure your rifle is in zero as [quote]A firearm which is not "in zero" is a dangerous firearm. Therefore, best practice dictates that a firearm be regularly zeroed to ensure it is safe.[unquote]

So unless they are going to change that as well.Which now would contradict their own safety advice.

TBH. Trying to understand what is even the thought process behind this is utterly baffling. As there are restrictions of use already in place and can be even defined by the local Super/Cheif as well. Restricted firearms can only be used on a range,or if suitable for hunting in a designated area, IE your deer lets. Unrestricted on land or water you have permission to shoot over. So what's the big govt panicking about now? That leaves going to another designated range, or you are a guest invitee, etc at a shoot.

If aGS wanted to be really picky there is legislation already in place for this under the 1927 act. Get a removal order of firearms and ammo from one district to another. That today is an already difficult and rather unworkable part of the acts, as it can literally take months for a Super to sign off on this. So unless they want to computerise this whole system down to a 24-hour timeframe...?

it seems to me that someone in a ministerial office with zero clue of the legislation is asking questions that have had answers a long time ago, but needs a committee to answer it for them and are looking to try and fix something that ain't broken.

Or someone/s whispering in his ear........

    *edited to add*

More than one Super has refused to acknowledge them and advised they're merely guidelines and that they don't have to even consider them.

Hearing that existing ammo allowances are being reduced on renewals in my area.

    Latest Meeting of FEC

Seems to me that the balance on the committee has been swung firmly on favour of the Gardai

Originally one member of AGS and one from Justice, now three AGS members and not the original representative from AGS.

It must be very hard for the shooting experts to get a word in.

I cannot see any good coming out of this process other than unreasonable and probably unworkable recommendations being enacted into the firearms legislation.

Does anyone remember the days when stalking rifles had to be stored in Garda Stations and you nearly needed an armed escort to go stalking, well those days don't look to far away now. The potential for the dissemination of misinformation as has been the stalwart of AGS objections to legitimate firearms holder increased disproportionately.

I despair nothing good will come of this other than more oppressive firearms legislation for legitimate firearms holders.

The members of the group who are there to provide expert opinion in defence of shooting sports, need to step back and leave as all they are doing is lending legitimacy to the oppressive direction the process is going in, so many positive improvements could have been made but they have thrown away the opportunity.
