They might be waiting to sell out of 2022. It seems to have been overproduced given how easily obtainable it was late in the year.
It was never easily obtainable and is long sold out. Anywhere I saw it sold out quite quickly, maybe online for a day or two.
Having said that anybody that wanted one could have got one.
According to this thread it was still on shelves coming up to mid-December. It was hard to get the first 6 months but didn’t seem to be much of an issue in the second half of 2022.
Still one on the shelf in my local o'briens as of 2 days ago! €220.
I only saw it in Dunnes once and haven't seen it in a Dunnes or Tesco since.
A few smaller places may still have a bottle but the main retailers didn't have it long.
I agree it was easy enough get bottles this time but only if you kept an eye out.
I saw one going for over €300 on one of the auction sites.
Yeah I'm baffled by what happens on the auction sites at times.
Bottles that are readily available in any off licence sometimes sell for higher than the shelf price... Trigger happy bidders doing so while under the influence maybe???
There doesn't seem to be a huge amount of rational thought being put into the purchasing and collecting of Midleton, generally. Nothing would really surprise me at this stage, although the "fever" seems to be wearing off.
I'm not so sure myself.
Now I might be biased as I've managed to get a hold of all of the new bottlings (since 2017), and plan to hold onto them rather than drink them. (Although I have drank bottles of the 2021 & 2022.)
The price of the 2020 and particularly the 2017 are sky rocketing in the last 3-4 months.
(bottle of 2017 sold for €1100 last month on whiskey bidders. And that's just the hammer price. That buyer would have actually shelled out close to €1250 after fees and delivery charges)
As always, anything is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Right now though there seems to be enough mad people willing to pay mad money for these.
Saw a Lagavulin 16 going above odds at auction the moment. And that’s a a regular whiskey, almost always available.
Theres a bottle of 2022 on IWA right now for €340.

Was told this directly by someone working in Bow Street. Complete redesign, wouldn't give me any other details but said it's very different to what's come before.
They held some back for Christmas market but it dried up quick enough. Picked up a bottle of 2021 in Bow Street for 250 the other week. No 2022 in stock but got some of that in the airport in October.
Does anyone have an idea where I could pick up a bottle of 2021. A friend is looking for a bottle but lives in Australia and I'd like to pick it up for him. Thanks
No superfluous packaging (box) would be far more sustainable. I can't see that happening, though.

MVR 2023 due for release this month according to Irish Distillers press release on packaging today.
Call me a sceptic but I'd like to see the environmental maths behind this for the premium wooden boxes. What's more sustainable than Wooden Boxes sourced from responsibly managed forestry?I want to see the quality of these new sustainable packages in 5, 10 years...How well will they stand up to life? Cost on another hand is very easy to see the benefits...
