sorry but how can these things keep happening without and accountability or responsibility?! It really is mind boggling sometimes how the public citizens in this country are treated like absolute fools! In the article it actually said that this would’ve been kept permanently only for the accidental discovery! It’s only now really coming out in the headlines, absolute scandal…
there must be something much bigger coming down the line
Here’s €50 for everyone in the audience. So you could have been charged since the start and me a new build a few weeks ago and we get the same. Crazy
Administrative error my hole.
What happens if you’ve lived in different addresses over this time?
Or you no longer are a bill payer but you were then?
Absolutely fucking outrageous. Not only that this was done in the first place, but that they chose to keep it quiet for over a decade. There's a lot of collusion going on here for that to happen.
"LOL, sorry we ripped you off. But here's 50 quid back for the 12 years we were taking money out of your pockets. We're all cool now yeah?"
The stuff us plebs don’t know about in this country must be massive.
Corrupt with zero accountability.
Energy suppliers tend to have that effect. And if you try and pass regulations to keep them regularly audited etc - oh you better not, the rate will go up
Completely agree! There’s so much crap going left right and centre but this really p!ssed me off! They are taking the absolute piss out of us here….
Makes you wonder where the CRU were all this time.
Somewhat confused, apparently 12 years of this overcharging will be compensated by a €50 note, but CRU estimates reversing it will save us on average €40pa. What gives?

"There was no indication bills were being artificially inflated" the reporting goes on to say, but that's exactly what the end result is if they do not refund the full amount - adjusting for inflation.
"ESB Networks anticipates that it will result in the reduction of a domestic electricity bill in the order of €50 in total"
I kinda don't give a fuck what the ESB "anticipates". This should be properly looked into by an independent body. Just how this can happen in the first place, why it went on for so long and what the exact amount of rip off we're talking about here.
That's just one politicians opinion being quoted though. ESB and CRU don't seem to be saying that.
Spotless reporting by IT there, cobbling together this hogwash.
You're right to be pissed off. South Carolinians had their own Nukegate scandal you can google up in your own time, but what my life experience has shown me is that energy suppliers have the ratepayer over a barrel usually, both figuratively, literally - and politically. The only thing that stands a chance is proper grassroots organization in response to these outrageous occurrences (as here)
So we're getting less than 1 cent for every week of those twelve years!
A real banana republic we're living in!
50 EUR is more than 6.24 EUR
(12 yrs, 52 wks/yr, 1 cent/wk)
(It's ~8 cent a week)
according to some of the articles above domestic electric users are short changed about 600 million?
given that there are currently 1.86 million housholds in the country (there may have been less in the past), rough pen and paper calculation is approx. €323 refund per household or even half that amount €150 compensation is probably closer to the mark ...
That's almost 52 cents a week! ;)
In the first six months of 2022 the ESB reported profits of 357 million.
Was it Ryan who signed off on it?
Loading costs onto consumers, win win for him.
Welp, that's up for correction.
That would be the Nursing Homes scandal.
This is "Oh, Look over there" - another scandal, certainly, but by faceless bureaucrats in a semi-state company rather than highly identifiable TDs and Ministers in the Dáil.
That's what happens when you have a 100 year power swap pretending to be civil war related.
I remember during the 90's someone discovered that we were still paying a tax on soft drinks that had been added during the Boer War.
Yep Ryan up to his eyeballs in this one. Was done when he was minister back in the Cowen shambles of a government. Seems to be the same people time and time again coming up in these scandals. Leo will be happy he is not the only one in the crosshairs. I wonder who will be thrown under the bus to save the minister.
After reading the article, ESB overcharged households and undercharged big companies, large consumers. Now the €50 money they return it comes from the ESB / tax payers. Where is the reason in that? How are they going to get the large consumers to pay that back?
I think we need to start at the beginning. What percentage increase was put on the bills? Was it on the net total, the unit price, the levy, standing charge?
Has anyone got a link to the above as I want to try and calculate this myself and if need be, I’ll be taking a case in small or normal court depending on the amount they overcharged me by.
We need to get the full picture here of what was charged, on what basis, for how long etc. Journalists as usual doing nothing to really unearth this and just banging on about €50 refund.
By what logic should small consumers be subsidising large users? Seems totally upside down and socially very regressive.
Would have made sense for it to be nationally controlled. Why didn’t we ever think of doing that?
