I just watched in back on FB - its got the best applause with lots of "woo hoo"s.. woo hoo
Yeah, I saw someone tweet what got the best responses, and it, Colin Farrell, and Paul Mescal got big cheers, so maybe there were just a lot of Irish people present.
I wouldn’t normally put a lot of store by the Oscars - CODA won best picture last year and that was utterly mediocre.
But I’m delighted that An Cailín Ciúin has got a nomination. It deserves all the recognition it gets and the more people who see it the better.
It's mad to think there's only been like 5(?) proper feature length films made in Irish. And all within the last few years. And one of them went and did this!
Not all... Poitín is a historic Irish-language film from back in 1978, and Kings was released in 2007. But yes, the surge in recent years has been unprecedented - Cine4 has been a true success story.
me either - in the past - but there are a lot more involved now in the judging.. it has more credibility..
What a film..I thought it was brilliant..I was very emotional at the end.
Luckily I was at home alone..10/10..
There was much to admire about this quiet, unassuming film but still I was left slightly underwhelmed by it.
The slim narrative and slow pace didn’t do enough to earn the emotional ending it was aiming for. I felt I didn't get to know the characters enough.
A very well made film though. The early 80’s was portrayed well and the struggles families were going through seemed spot on.
I saw The Banshees of Inisherin last weekend too and between the two films the Irish sure do know how to make sadness and loneliness an art form.

Oh it's very, very different! But equally as good IMO. Got as far as the shortlist for the Oscars.
Arracht is the kind of film you'd expect from an Ireland, to be honest. It's very bleak and sad and features the famine and *shakes fist* British landlords. Not a bad film by any means, but not on a par narratively with The Quiet Girl.
Can we convince ourselves the Kinsellas write for her - maybe on the pretence they need help - and she moves back in with them forever..
Any reason why it's not on a streamer yet?
Plenty! It’s still playing in sold out cinema screens across the country, so presumably and very sensibly the distributors likely want to keep it as a premium offering for now. Secondly, TG4 had the foresight to back the project so will likely have secured some generous broadcasting rights in the process. And finally, it’s readily available across multiple VOD easily accessible platforms for a pretty reasonably price, or on Blu-Ray and DVD alternatives :)
do yourself a favour and go see it in cinema.. twill be soo worth it
We can convince ourselves of anything. It's the beauty of a film like that where we are not beaten over the head with an 'ending'.
Either way, she has been affected for the better by her short while with them.
I loved it. On my fourth time watching it now and still seeing little things I missed on earlier viewings.
Very good film, does the basics really well, excellent acting and quite a heartfelt story.
See its out in the US this weekend. Some really good reviews/articles coming out singing its praises.
I wonder if it has just the slightest chance at the Oscars.
The critic in Rolling Stone really really liked it.

Well that completely cleaned up at the BAFTAs so you'd have to fancy its chances 😔
It didn't get as many nominations at the Oscars but yeah, I'd be shocked if All Quiet didn't win. Nice to dream though.

I'm going to watch this for the 5th or 6th time now. Just a magical film (or filum even!) I think it deserved more award nominations than just Foreign Language, but, níl aon fhios agam, gan dabht!
