You're being disingenuous.
Schools don't "teach LGBT" as part of the curriculum.
But they do have to comply with the Equal Status Acts.
Teach what stuff? He didn't object to being expected to teach anything. He objected to using a student's new name and preferred pronouns. When faced with showing kindness and respect to a student his response was to throw a temper tantrum. And if he does go to jail he won't be a prisoner of conscience. He'll be a prisoner of hubris. He would be in jail because he doesn't think that the courts have any jurisdiction over him. Nothing to do with his religious beliefs, unless being abusive towards others is part of his religion.
Granted, he and those that support him want to pretend that it is about something else. But it isn't.
And is that being enforced in schools we know will not teach that.
The next question is does calling someone by the preferred name and pronoun, not count as promoting dignity and respect for the individual as per the above?
Exactly but that is cherry picking Burke would view it 'as long as individuals respect the Christian Ethos'
This part -
'We are proud of our Church of Ireland heritage. Students of all faiths are welcome, providing there is an acceptance of our ethos.'
There lies the rub.
Then you have the argument does a transgender person have the right to request certain pronouns in a Christian School? I doubt Burke believes so. And is horrified at the school for allowing it etc.
Sorry - misread your post, thout you said the minister HAD stormed into schools - apologies.
But again, it's not relevant to Burke, because Burke wsan't being ordered to teach anything he disagreed with. Or even interact with the student. I accept your point that this may happen in the future - and it's a valid point - but just not relevant here.
Simple answer to that again is that he could have resigned if there was a conflict. No one forced him to do anything.
His entitlement to being a part of the Irish Natron is not being challenged, and yes I am.
Again, teach what?
You did not misread I ninja edited a mistake my bad. It's not so much the clown here It's a wider issue of some schools not teaching this part of the curriculum. Are we suggesting certain ME schools in south Dublin are teaching this. That's what annoys me the most If they all were then I would have less of an Issue. Are we suggesting they are using pronouns for students. And In before maybe no one wants to be called x That could easily be down to Religious indoctrination just like the clown. Or fear of suggesting that in the first place. Not all animals are equal. Like I said it's a cognitive dissonance.
But if Burke was forced to resign he would view it as himself being wronged as he himself is a Christian and the school itself ostensibly has a Christian ethos. Looking at it from that perspective you see why Burke feels cornered.
If I was in Burkes position and the school was non denominational there would be less of an argument as the change of course would not be 'sprung' on him.
I believe all the antics he is doing are just to draw attention to how he feels wronged. Judging by the type he is he is. I don't think he will back down. However, ill judged his methods maybe.
Its seems that Martina's level of teaching might be sub standard. Enoch's just going for outright stupidity at this point.
No school is "teaching LGBT" as part of curriculum.
Fair enough but it will be.
So how do we square this circle.
But that was not the issue here. The school was not being asked to teach anything, and neither was Burke.
The school was asked to respect a student's request to be referred to by gender neutral pronouns and a new name.
The school agreed to this request.
What makes you think other schools aren't doing the same?
Also this.
edit be aware it's a pdf that you download don't if you have no anti virus.
We know a certain Religion is not a fan so they will not be teaching it. It will be fun to watch them squirm over trying to enforce the curriculum.
Apparently, he was living locally when teaching full time. It wouldn’t make sense to have daddy doing a two hour each way commute.
Christian schools and not exempt from the Equal Status Acts, no matter what their ethos is.
And the fact is, the school here agreed to the student's request.
The only one with a problem with it, was Burke.
Its telling that not even a single member of WHS staff has come out in support of his stance. (pardon the pun).
But the specific point I'[m making is that Burke's religious beliefs were not challenged and the syllabus isn't relevant - unless the state was forcing the school and the school was forcing Burke to actaully teach the stuff.
The school is not oblighed to sign up to every aspect of CoI teaching any more than Catholic schools are oblighed to teach cathecism. It being non-denominational makes no difference because it's private.
Furthrmore, as I saifd above, Burke was not being oblighed to teach anything he disagreed with - and that's were the argument falls flat. As far as I know, he wasn't even require to teach the student.
Beyond that every one of us has the same choice: unless we're asked to do something illegal we can do as our employer requests or we can find alternative employment.
promoting dignity and respect for the individual
so what’s the issue here exactly?
Can you break down the Equal status act in layman's terms and how all schools will be not exempt from it. I.E other Religious orders.
The nonsense is continuing anyway.
The school got to have there disciplinary hearing but it doesn’t matter….he is still showing up and I expect him to do the same all next week.
Prison is the only remedy to stop his gallop and he should have been left there for Christmas…..the idea that a school disciplinary hearing trumps a contempt of court judgement is concerning…..and it didn’t change anything anyway.
i feel sorry for him.. its v v sad.. standing at the school gates like that.. the embarrassment #innerchild
I agree but I'm thinking bigger picture here. Once the stuff I linked comes down the line. I guarantee there will be a legal challenge by a particular Religion that was the only one to try and use the blasphemy law. Are we suggesting If they lose the case there will be an apatite to march into said schools and enforce.
Every windows PC has anti virus. It’s called windows defender.
if you pay for one otherwise you’re a bigger eejit than Burke.
He should open his own private school seeing as how he is a qualified teacher and invite like minded people to send their children to him for thousands a term.
He has no one else to blame for the situation he is in.
Of topic but mine Has green ticks and alike for safe sites. Automatically quarantines. List goes on. WD is like wearing nothing on the internet. I suggest you tell Sever admins to just use it and not Hardware firewalls and anti virus.
Google is free you know.
The Equal Status Acts 2000-2015, prohibit discrimination in the provision of goods and services, the provision of accommodation and access to education, on any of the nine grounds set out below. The Equality (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2015 has inserted a tenth ground in the provision of accommodation only; the “housing assistance” ground. The Acts outlaw discrimination in all services that are generally available to the public whether provided by the state or the private sector. These include facilities for refreshment, entertainment, banking, insurance, grants, credit facilities, transport and travel services. Discrimination in the disposal of premises, provision of accommodation, admission to, access to and conditions of participation in educational courses or establishments are also prohibited subject to some exemptions.
The grounds on which discrimination is outlawed by the Equal Status Acts are as follows:
‘the gender ground
the other 8 are largely irrelevant to this point. But sexual orientation is one also.
Well either you’re wrong about that WD comment or I’ve been lucky for the past 20 years because I’ve never had a virus in my life.
anyone complete aside.
Are you incapable of doing your own research?
If so, here is a handy booklet.
