Ballinfoyle never had alleyways. Tirellan Heights had many, none were lit and the majority were just a gravel surface. Not conducive to moving people safely after dark.
Well there we go, Dublin rd upgrade is not planned to kick off until 2026
So that'll be 2027/2028
Anything to keep the existing situation as crap as possible for as long as possible to justify the GCRR
Radio interview on the issue of safety at RAB's around the city
So slow for what appears to be a fairly simple project.
Especially when you consider that the GTS, after years of work on it, was released in 2016, so they are looking at a decade from it getting into the strategy to starting construction
For a bus lane
The most ridiculous part of it is that the public are being "given the chance to have their say on the ‘emerging preferred route’."
Hmmm ... what route should the Dublin Road Bus Corridor run along? Here's a radical idea - how about the Dublin Road?
Oh, could we route the Dublin Road through the city a few times and get bus and cycle lanes throughout in 2027?
Ah nimbys, you have to love them
Under the plan, there are two bus routes planned for the area instead of one, with buses travelling up and down the entire length of Dr Mannix Road, instead of just one section of it (Dalysfort Road junction to Threadneedle Road junction) as is the case now.
“The threat of a ban on parking on both sides of Dr Mannix Road, the loss of trees and green areas to accommodate the cycle lane continues to hang over our area,” the newsletter stated.
“This is a source of concern to residents, not only on Dr Mannix Road but throughout our area as it would case parking overflow throughout the estate.”
A spokesperson for the association told the Galway City Tribune said residents were not against cycle lanes in general, but it would not work in this area.
Amazing growth in bus passenger numbers in the city
More people than ever are opting to take the bus in the city, with the latest figures showing demand is running at 14 per cent higher than pre-Covid figures in 2019.
There were 5.3 million Bus Éireann passenger journeys in the city in 2022. While the first two months of the year were depressed due to the pandemic, the year as a whole was more than 70 per cent higher than in 2021.
There has been a “significant growth” in passengers since the beginning of September, revealed a spokesperson for Bus Éireann.
They successfully campaigned for speed bumps, got them, then complained they were too high slowing down traffic too much, and got them lowered.
It's a pity to see this reaction. Whatever about Bus Lanes on Dr. Mannix, cycle lanes would definitely make sense. Run a cycle lane through the Golf Course, parallel to Kingston Road, connecting on one end to Millar's Lane, and on the other to Dr. Mannix, and there would be a cycle lane from Knocknacarra most of the way to most schools serving the area, in addition to most of the way to town. It's logical and minimally disruptive.
Unfortunately it's disruptive to the folks who want to be able to park on the road instead of their driveway.
When you're up against that sort of thing...
If they have a driveway, little sympathy for that. Also, could the cycle lane not be designed in such a way as to allow space for road side parking if needed? Anything to move from the either/or position.
Yeah, there's not a home along that road that doesn't have a driveway. Most have space for storage of multiple cars as far as I can see on sat images
Also, could the cycle lane not be designed in such a way as to allow space for road side parking if needed?
It possibly could, just not sure there is a need per above comment, plus if you do that there's no space left for bus lanes. The bus lanes will take the lions share of the space used for parking along this road which means parking on the road has to go, regardless of bike lanes.
On another note, I can't see them being able to keep the trees if bus lanes are going in.
What you'll end up with is wider footpaths, bike lanes, bus lanes and car lanes.
We'll have to wait and see if it's going to get past the nimby's
Yep this route was being given as an easy alternative to the Salthill Cycleway. Removing (public) on-street parking from a residential street is always going to face opposition.
Bizarre. It's been in planning for years. It's not a big job in engineering terms
On the need for bike lanes

Anyone up for a spin along the Prom?
Was in Limerick this morning, the traffic there seems to flow very freely compared to the constant stop start in our city.
How much actually occurs from locals though? If you travel there in the evenings say after 21h00 at night - might spot 3-4 cars parked on the entire length of Dr Mannix Road from Threadneedle to Devon Park. There is plenty of side roads along it as well that provide "local" parking. Take away the on-street car parking at Aras Bothar na Trá during day time and very little occurs anyhow apart from drop off to St Enda's School and Scoil Íde. I can understand locals using it as leverage to deal with match day parking at Pearse Stadium. GAA really need to get Clubs to start running buses from the local GAA clubs for Club and County matches
They had the two rollers on it today. THe section between Rahoon Road and WDR could be surfaced/finished by end of week. Not sure will it be open. They use wide section at top of pitchs for storing plant so might need this section to complete the next section to the South of WDR.
Junction narrowing finally on the cards around Galway. Hopefully these become permanent
Thursday night;
I really do wish they would just go with a permanent solution for this type of work. Do it all over the City. Just have a dedicated team doing it. Its not very costly in materials, more labour.
It may not look like a big thing - but it makes such a difference for people walking and on bikes. Council did it years ago on Maunsells Road/Shantalla Road and then just left it at that even though either side had similar wide junctions at Highfield Park and Colmcille Road.
Would start with all the massive entrances/exits into housing estates like John Coogan Park, Highfield Park, Colmcille Road, Pollnarooma West, Leisureland/The Prom - the list is endless when ya start reviewing where this can be done. Renmore has a number of examples along Ballyloughane Road as does Ballybane Road
Apparently Headford is a mess due to cars. The local councilor wants to fix the problem by making room for more of them
Councillor Andrew Reddington says such a study is long overdue as traffic congestion has been an issue in the town for quite a while now.
The Headford based councillor says more parking along the main street in the town is needed as the many cars are often 'abandoned' along the street as they can't obtain parking.
Tomorrow night, 8pm, RTE1
It's Thursday night at 8pm
So it is
"Watch EcoEye this Thursday at 8pm on RTE1 and see what they have to say about Galway traffic."
Nothing that we haven't heard a thousand times before.
