Anyone install Ductless MVHR such as EcoVolt Zero1 or Lunos E60?

70s house. Condensation issues. Am going to try and improve ventilation first by installing additional wall vents (Lunos ALDs). I'm considering supplementing this with either a PIV unit in the attic (with a heating element) or else a Ductless MVHR solution such as the EcoVolt Zero1 or Lunos E60.

I'd be curious to know if anyone has installed the latter and how they're getting on with them - particularly if they were installed into an existing house with standard airtightness.

I like the idea of ductless MVHR but I'm worried that the house mightn't be airtight enough for them hence the PIV option which probably works better in a leaky building.

yeah fair point on the noise of a ductless system, it would be noisier as the motor is in the same room you are. The units though are rated to just under 30 decibels at a 3 metre distance so it isnt noisy but you probably would be aware of it. I run an air to air heat pump in the living room which operates at 50 decibels and it never bothers me anyway, like I know when it is running but it doesnt annoy me.

That aside I still dont think it makes sense financially to retrofit a ducted system because it means opening up walls and ceilings & floors, its not a small job compared to fitting a ductless system. It certainly can be done and a company will take your money but it would be at a massive expense compared to installing a ductless system. I had a quote on this before and a ducted system would cost me 3 to 4 times the price of what it would cost me to go with a ductless system, in fact more now as that was based on Lunos system at 500 a unit whereas now that BPC site has units for 230 each.

I have also read the ductless system efficiency goes out the window if it's windy out and they are exposed. Cold air blowing forcefully over the heat exchanger.

Looks to be a good price, would love some feedback from anyone that's installed them.

I just purchased two of them. They arrived and I plan to install them next week. Only issue I see is locating a 168-170mm core bit. The wet bit will be messy for me and require a scaffold. I can't locate a dry bit anywhere...yet

I got one installed in our kitchen because we were always getting mold in a corner of 2 outside walls.We leave it on ,on low all day and night. We put it up to full extraction when cooking and leave it going full tilt until the windows are defogged. It doesn't take long then we put it back to low in-out mode. It works a dream.. We are very happy with its performance. Full tilt is noisy but so is a cooker hood. Low, we dont hear at all .The only gripe is it randomly jumps to full on without any reason. It doesn't seem to switch back so we have to intervene. If it goes " hido" in the middle of the night we have to go and shut it off. Don't know why it does that. Other than that its a great little piece of engineering.

For future people looking at this forum; we had four BSK Zephy ductless HRV units installed in the house, and they have been excellent. There are four speed modes, and three airflow functions (intake, exhaust, or switching between intake and exhaust every 70 seconds). There's a night time mode for use in the bedroom and they are very quiet when in this mode. In fact, they're so quiet that we use the "low" fan speed in our room, as it's still quiet enough to not bother us.

The app is also quite good, allowing individual control of all the units when at home or away, and allows you to schedule different fan speeds for different times / days.

The units can also be set to "boost" mode for extraction when a specific humidity is reached - for example, the one in our kitchen is set to boost when the humidity gets above 70 %, so no worries when cooking with steam in the space. Very much set it and forget it.

I'd highly recommend them and would be happy to answer Q's on them in future!

I have the box with the documents at home somewhere, but specs and energy certification only. I wouldn't think CN compliance would be an issue, there was no material change to the building as it was replacing existing open / passive vents.

Ah; so we took the opportunity to have them installed during a full re-wire of the house. They have their own individual spur to the fusebox, though I'm not sure if this is required.

I remember looking at the Lunos originally and the cost was the single most reason I’d decided against them. I can tell you from the exploded view that the BSK units are constructed almost identically.
I should have added earlier, you can also pair multiple Zephyrs if you wish when setting up to work together. I preferred to keep them individual and adjust as needed via the app or remote control.

I'll be installing a ductless heat recovery unit by the end of August. Was just about to order a Lunos this weekend (I forget the model, but it is circa €500) so Im glad I checked the thread as those BSK units are tempting me at around half the price. Also having an app to control it is handy over the Lunos which doesnt have an app AFAIK.

@Gotfoodforphil how would you describe the noise from your BSK model when it is running on a low constant mode? I'll be sitting approx 2.5 metres away from it when Im in the room. Generally the tv or radio is on so shouldnt be an issue but just wondering if you can hear it at that distance if there is silence in the room.

If the room was silent you would hear it, as a faint hum in the background, but it wouldn't bother you I don't think. Definitely not noticeable with any sort of background sound to mask it, like you've said with a TV or radio on.

That said, if you have the intake/exhaust switching mode turned on, you might notice the fan spooling down and up as it changes direction? I have the units set so they air is being pulled through the house by two units and exhausted by two units, so I don't often use the switching mode but when I have you can hear the change faintly in a quiet room.

One more thing you've reminded me; when you have the units scheduled to change mode or speed via the app, they will make a single audible beep when the change occurs. For the unit in our bedroom I initially had the unit set to change from medium to low fan speed at night but the beep noise as I was going to sleep was annoying me, so I just set the unit to be always on low and turned off it's schedule.

Needs to be noted that to actually get the heat recovery, you need the exhaust/intake switching, otherwise you're just heating up the ceramic core on the exhaust units and not getting that heat back

I use intake/exhaust pairs to bring cooler air from the shaded side of a north-south facing house during summer; but change back to switching in winter.

The electrician / builders only had to drill one hole for us, the other was replacement of passive vents that were actually filled in as the vents were installed as they were wide enough already.

Doing exactly the same here, using the vents at the front of the house to pull air through the house and the rear vents are exhausting to cool the kitchen / living area, which get's quite hot in the summer. Will be switching back in the winter as you've said.

One more thing to add, on the beeping; if you have the unit set to trigger a change in mode based on humidity, the unit will make a beep when it switches mode. It was happening a lot yesterday in one of the rooms where I had the unit set to increase exhaust once 65 % humidity was reached - it was beeping a lot as it ramped up and until room reached < 65 %, then when it went above 65 %, then below, then above, etc. It was a misty day so that didn't help. But you could turn this mode off altogether, or raise the humidity trigger threshold..

thanks for the info. I ordered one of the BSK models from BPC Ventilation this afternoon so hopefully will have it up and running next week. I had been wondering if I should get two of them for the same space (about 40sqm) but it seems one unit is enough to change the air in a 50sqm space. One thing I did wonder though is if a single unit is used and is switching between intake and extract mode every minute or so is it completely changing all the air in a room or just the air within a few meters of the unit.

No problem, hope all goes well for you. We ordered from BPC as well, they were straightforward enough. Not sure doing a full air change in the room at the low fan speed, but I think medium would? You'll notice the fan more at medium / high speeds though.

You could contact BSK and ask - I've found they're pretty good at getting back on any questions I had.
