I wonder how this will work out for him

I’ve said it so many times, the mental gymnastics of Burke supporters to try and blame everyone but Burke is astounding and frankly worth an Olympic medal.
I went to school in a different county myself. I don't know Westmeath, but I'm sure there are options to travel or relocate if necessary.
For something so life-changing, moving school would have been better for the child, and for everyone else involved.
The question is, why move?
There’s either something wrong with your brain or you’re a píss taker.
why should the child be disrupted because enoch cannot act in a reasonable manner. The problem here is Enoch and nothing else.
Already mentioned why in post #1247.
I can't imagine if I had a transgender child wanting to keep them in a religious school (or one that purports to be religious) unless I was looking for trouble. It is not in the interests of the child or anyone else.
I'm not going to go through 42 pages of the thread, but I'm just thinking to myself, 'whats the endgame' for these people?
like, they're young adults, surely they're essentially unemployable now?
you have to wonder what sort of control their parents have over them to be encouraging them down this route?
Is the John Rogers that is chairman of the BOM the former AG
they were all homeschooled. the control is complete
The child simply requested that they be referred to by the pronouns "they/them". The school were willing to accommodate that simple request. There's no issue regarding religion on the part of the child, the school or the Church or Ireland.
I don't know for certain , but I highly doubt it.
I quick check shows that the former AG called John Rogers attended Rockwell College for school.
That would tend to suggest it's unlikely that he'd have an affiliation with Wilsons in later life.
So you didn't bother to find out before replying?
But sure why bother, when what you really want, is for the child to just "go away somewhere else".
Sorry. The only closets there should be in schools are those meant for storing stationery.
Religious schools generally accept pupils of all religions and none. But what's the connection that you're making between religion and being trans. Are you assuming that trans people have no religion?
Do you expect atheist students or Muslim students to move school?
But it’s not about your imagination.
There have been few details released about the child for obvious reasons, but we can assume that both parents and child were comfortable with them staying in an environment which they were accustomed to, amongst friends and teachers (with one exception) who were supportive.
There could be no guarantee that the child would be more accepted at another school where they know neither teachers nor pupils. And unless I am mistaken, there is no dedicated school for transgender children.
Definetely the 2nd one....at least I hope it is.
Their mother and father are both self-employed. So that may influence their attitude to employability.
Indeed and especially so for C of I schools in Ireland given the prevailing nature of the majority of schools in this country.
They have tended to be Schools for "Not Catholics" rather than explicitly "Protestant" per se.
Having attended such a school as a notionally Catholic (at the time, now nothing) student I can attest to the fact that Religion plays an infinitely smaller role in those schools than it does in the more typically Catholic run state schools - Having never experienced it, I was taken aback by the level of Catholic Church involvement in my own childrens schools.
Religion isn't a subject on the syllabus , there aren't any masses or prayer sessions onsite etc.
All of those things happen where they should - In the Church that the student and their families attend outside of the school.
It is against any religion that's Christian. CoI is a Christian religion.
The parents or the school, or both, didn't think about consequences.
The school promoted themselves as a Christian school. Someone like Burke would not have sought employment there otherwise.
it is against any religion to use the pronoun They? what is your basis for that?
How did you work out that Christian schools don't work for trans pupils?
I thought a fundamental basis of Christianity was to welcome all?
Only if the take religion literally.
Most of us realise that it isn’t okay to sell our youngest into slavery, put anyone who insists on working on the Sabbath to death, stone my brother John for planting different crops side by side, or burn my mother in a pyre for wearing garments made of different threads, just because it says so in Religious text.
(West Wing fan here)
Yep, Burke should have been allowed to have his cake (his injunction) but be made eat it in jail (for contempt).
Spoken like someone that has never crossed the door of a school of this kind in their lives...
People of the Protestant faith in this country generally speaking do all their "religious" stuff in actual churchs - Kids go to Sunday school to learn about the bible and to prepare for Confirmation and so on.
They don't get their religious instruction in school (certainly not at secondary) unlike Catholic schools.
But all of that is entirely secondary to the fact that ALL of this is exclusively the fault of Enoch Burke and his total inability to act with anything remotely approaching decency and respect for anyone and anything other than himself.
...
According to news reports, they requested being addressed by a new name.
The 'they/them' thing by itself wouldn't be much of an issue (in my view) but changing the name would, because teachers have to use names for students, there's no getting away from that.
why? what specific part of any religion prevents someone from changing their name? be specific in your reply? all i'm hearing from you is transphobia thinly (very thinly) disguised as religion,
Fundamentally , Tolerance and Respect are bi-directional.
If anyone anywhere expects people to be Tolerant or respectful of theirs view without any plans to reciprocate they are doomed to failure.
Enoch Burke is claiming that his beliefs and rights are being impacted without any awareness that he is equally impacting the rights of others.
He simply can't have it all his own way.
Life is about compromise, however compromise does not seem to be a word that Enoch was ever taught by his parents.
How do you feel about it when people change their surnames when they get married and asked to be called by their new name?
Shocking stuff.

I'm talking about the Boggles Brigade
Excuse me?
I mean I like the sound of it, but what in the name Jaysus are you talking about?
