New Munster chat thread folks. warning deserved there. https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=109477571#post109477571
Completely different circumstances and nearly all those who were sub academy etc then are now academy. Name names then if you think theres people who you think would be suitable if available
Can you name names?
Most, if not all of them are named above.
Does anyone know if McDonald is sticking around? Like what he brings, and with all the injuries he could be worth holding onto until at least the end of this season..
Can’t be certain, they said he will be assessed so who knows
”Roman Salanoa was removed with an arm injury during the win over Northampton and will be managed by the medical department. His availability for Toulouse will be determined later in the week.”
They had Conor Moloney (flanker with Young Munster) and John Forde (lock/back row) on the bench for the Wasps game in Dec 2021.
What about Conor Moloney that played against Wasps?
Forde went to Connacht
Well Jack O'Sullivan will probably start with Kendellan and Hodnett then. Eoin O'Conner and Cian Hurley come into the squad, with one starting beside Kleyn and the other on the bench.
Could go with two hookers on the bench too. I remember Buckley packing down in the back row late in a game earlier on this season.
And going on what Rowntree said last week, Fineen W could be back for it.
Name players that should have been picked. many of those from wasps game are now academy or contracted.
Not following you, talking about the Benetton game next week
He's unlikely to be sticking around. Both Edogbo and Fineen W are due back in the next couple of weeks. Snyman and Ahern could be back in March.
He's injured himself at the minute.
Don’t disagree about Daly, he’s been excellent this year. Thought I would have had Nash ahead of him in terms of missing out. Given his involvements earlier this season.
I think Nash started the season better but Daly’s been better of late.
Very little between them tho, but thought Daly’s versatility might have given him a better chance.
Daly has come into his own in recent weeks. And importantly, is now doing for Munster what Faz wants his wingers doing for Ireland.
I think Moloney might have washed out. He’s not in the NTS. Possibly is in PTS but they are rarely public. I haven’t seen if he is playing AIL or at least haven’t noticed him on any team sheets. One of those guys that Munster really need (and probably did try) to convert to front row. He’s big enough and aggressive enough, but its a big commitment to make on the hope of getting a pro contract. They are getting kind of stacked in the back row or at least they are stacked with high upside guys. Quinn of course, probably Gleeson and even Sheahan and the second Edogbo are hard guys to beat to academy shots.
Not related to the above at all, but i think Rowntree said Fineen W is back for Benneton, so add him to the list.
.
With the heineken cup quarter finals in April, if Munster could get their pack fit.
Salanoa - Scannell - Loughman
Kleyn - Snyman
Beirne - Coombes - POM
Ryan
Barron
Kilcoyne
Edogbo
Ahern
Hodnett/Kendellan
That could legitimately upset anyone. Like, i wouldn’t bet on it but i wouldn’t be surprised.
Ryan is going to New Zealand the first week in February. So, Archer or Knox if fit or French (but he doesn’t seem to ever get mentioned despite being on a senior contract ).
I don’t see why we’d select 6 forwards on the bench, so it would be a choice between Ahern, Edogbo, and Wycherley or Beirne could switch to lock and select two back rows, O’Donoghue probably one of them.
I’d select 6 forwards just because i believe the talent is there honestly compared to the backs. Lean into it. Yea, Knox instead of Ryan. I’m not sure if you need JOD as you have tons of lineout options there but him instead of kendellan or hodnett would make sense.
I don't think he's playing at all this season.
Only two changes to the team with Salanoa dropping to the bench for Ryan and Hodnett coming in for JOD. Murray, Healy, Fekitoa, Barron and Jack O' Sullivan come onto the bench.
Munster: Mike Haley; Calvin Nash, Antoine Frisch, Jack Crowley, Shane Daly; Joey Carbery, Craig Casey; Dave Kilcoyne, Niall Scannell, John Ryan; Jean Kleyn, Tadhg Beirne; Peter O’Mahony (C), John Hodnett, Gavin Coombes.
Replacements: Diarmuid Barron, Josh Wycherley, Roman Salanoa, Jack O’Sullivan, Alex Kendellen, Conor Murray, Ben Healy, Malakai Fekitoa.
Its as strong a teams as we could have hoped for. The pack is very small compared with Toulouse but if we can keep the number of handling errors as low as possible, keep ruck speed as fast as we can and not give their big boys the chance to push us off our own ball then we have a chance
Playing 2 playmakers with a 3rd on the bench is interesting
Hopefully Kleyn and Beirne can last the 80
That is an interesting one; the 3 previous times we've had Carbery/Crowley at 10/12, we've went for Rory Scannell on the bench, so that's a bit of a change. (Also likely means Crowley is even less likely to see gametime at 10 in this one).
Good to see Murray back on the bench tho, and always good to have Hodnett starting.
It probably also means that Crowley's ankle must be ok otherwise we'd have seen Rory on the bench.
Too lazy to check but is Ben available to us next weekend or does his call up by Scotland mean he'll miss the trip to Treviso
Pretty sure he's available. Open to correction, but in theory should be available for the Ospreys and Scarlets games too? (Unless that has changed...)
The IRFU are slipping up, Joey starts and no Earls for our game V Toulouse and in the Irish 6Ns squad we have Earls and no Joey.
It's pretty odd. I'm not sure I ever remember such a disparty between Provincial selection and national selection. Going back to Frawley and even JGP, there's a fair few examples.
For all the talk of Carbery, the real shift seems to be at scrum-half and it looks like Casey is now the main man.
Will be very interesting to see if Ireland follow suit.
Toulouse have gone for a 6/2 split on the bench.
Somewhat bizarre news story in the Connacht Tribune today suggesting Bundee Aki might be moved to Munster for the final year of his contract.
He's available for the game technically, but it would mean him travelling to Italy after the squad session ends next Wednesday
(b) For Northern Hemisphere Unions, Monday to Wednesday of the week preceding the assembly period for the Northern Hemisphere Release Period.
The release period for the international matches allows for 5 clear days of training before their international match, so the release period is the week leading up to the first weekend of games, and the squad session is the week before that, from Monday to Wednesday. This means Healy can technically be recalled for the game, but won't have trained that week, and would have to travel to italy at some point from Wednesday night
I doubt we'll bother with him, especially now that Carbery should be available
