Wasn't listed as injured in Tuesdays squad update.
Just checked, 57 mins so earlier than you'd expect. It was right after a mistake, he was back re-claiming a kick into the 5m line (probably he should've taken the ball into touch) but he did seem to take a knock as well.
I think the camera went to him at one point as well and he looked strapped up.
But he wasn't mentioned in any injury updates.
Yea, have the people saying Carbery is out of form been watching their games? He’s been better than he has been in a long time. He was picked for squad after squad based on way worse form .
Didn't Carbery go off early enough against Northampton at the weekend?
Earls is firmly outside the first choice Munster XV by now. He’s played so little he hasn’t managed to have quite so many poor performances as Stockdale.
To be fair, he's played so little because he's been injured. He only returned in the middle of December. It's only last weekend really that he found himself behind others.
Its weird if Carbery isnt injured. & because Stockdale is included.
Other than that I think it's a relatively fair enough selection. Earls is there to win his 100th cap.
I guess we'll find out about Carbery tomorrow when Munster name their team.
Better still, ROG vs Byrne debates
It’s a bizarre squad really. Farrell has earned pretty much all benefit of the doubt and I’m curious what he says about some selections.
dropping Carbery now when he’s playing well is odd timing after all the squads he’s made. And keeping earls and stockdale in there makes no sense to me. Earls is firmly outside the first choice Munster XV by now. He’s played so little he hasn’t managed to have quite so many poor performances as Stockdale.
Its an odd mix of seemingly looking to the future and old heads picked on past glory.
Carbery IMHO just isn't good enough. We've waited long enough for his form to return and it hasn't.
POM
Stockdale, Murray and Earls are all in the squad purely because of central contracts. Because as we all know, that's how they work. Andy Farrell is forced to pick these players. There's a literal clause in the contracts that they must be picked forever, because the suits dictate that it would be a waste of money otherwise. Makes perfect sense. Don't argue with my flawless logic.
If Munster said that they’d be quickly told to get fucked.
POM is back-up no.7 I'd say
If Carbery has been dropped I'll be
Interesting times. Media are going to be all over this one.
Timoney loses out to Coombes which is fair enough on current form. Earls very lucky to be included given that Daly and Nash are keeping him out at Munster. Stockdale lucky too, Ulster being muck at the moment hasn't helped him find form. Murray is lucky that none of the other 9s are doing particularly well, he's in and out of the Munster 23 here days like. Henshaw is a loss but it's good to see Osborne stepping up, let's see if he can get some game time and test himself at this level. Mike Haley very unlucky to lose out but them's the breaks when you only play 15.
The out half situation is a bit weird. Crowley still hasn't wrestled the 10 jersey from Joey at Munster. Joey hasn't been great and is a bit of a liability in defence but jettisoning him now is a bold move. Ross B deserves to be there, no doubt on that.
I'm a little anxious that our squad depth doesn't match our WC ambitions
This is a weird selection to me.
I’d honestly say Carbery has been playing better recently than ever. I would have understood dropping him several times over the years but now is hard to understand.
Earls and Stockdale are not in form at all. Like at all.
Kilcoyne was not playing better than loughman when both fit. Its my understanding that loughman is back soon.
The only two rewards for form are Byrne and Osborne, and honestly I have no idea what people are seeing that’s different about Byrne. He’s always been good but apparently not the type of good they liked. But now he is?
All the talk of Carbery aside, genuinely delighted for Ross Byrne. Imo he absolutely deserves this call-up, he's been excellent this season. He's come from a place where the Irish coaches just had no interest in him at all (picking H.Byrne who had barely played or done anything, Frawley who'd spent a season playing 12, Crowley who again looked promising but hadn't really done anything) ahead of him and he's forced his way back in.
If Carbery is actually fit, I just can't understand it. He's been in far, far worse form at various points in his career and still was always picked. He's been playing fine recently I thought.
Presumably earls is included for experience because its not on form.
Stockdale hasnt shown his form of old in any game either, but its not as if he has played in a game Ulster have done well in that he could shine either.
Delighted for prendergast and Coombes, hopefully they see game time at some stage.
Im not really surprised about Carbery, he has played a good few games and hasnt been anything above ordinary also because byrne can do everything he does. The only problem is that he can cover FB as a bench option better than Byrne.
I know endless ROG v Sexton debates are frowned upon on here. But the mods haven't said sh!t about endless Byrne v Crowley debates...
It'd be POM; played at 7 before for us, and is entirely possible he'd be seledcted there ahead of Timoney anyways, even if he was in the squad.
There's 2 possible explanations:
That's it really.
Has to be injured.
Have heard numerous times that Earls is very good to have around camp, not sure I see him making the 23 but might make the bench. Delighted for Stockdale after the negative headlines during the week and good to see Coombes's form rewarded.
Anyone know when Loughman is due back - he's a loss.
Nick Timoney isn't in the squad either. There's no cover for openside at all in the event VDF picks up an injury. It's not an issue selecting a replacement in that event, but I would have thought we'd have brought another 7.
Which was outside an international window. This isn't.
The more likely explanation is that 1) Carbery's injured or maybe 2) Farrell's favoured RB and Crowley. Which would be a big change to previous selection, but not unthinkable.
Occam's razor.
Carbery wasn't listed as injured in this weeks Munster squad update, so it has to be a selection choice.
Joey has been out of form for a long time. I'm just surprised Farrell would drop him. Harsh call but probably the right one. Murray and Earls very lucky. Coombes making it is the right decision, good to see Farrell reward his form.
It worked that way for the emerging Ireland tour
Explain carbery omission then?
Absolutely not
