I think it's the most beautiful song.. because it's so honest...

Its so authentic...well my interpretation of it is ...I mean how I relate to it...not anyone else

Hes still loves her but in a different way...he's saying how he feels trapped and he can't live up to unrealistic expectations from him and even if he could..it wouldn't be him...

I read before that his children or his wife who it was about... not sure were very hurt by the lyric...'the feelings that you lack' and it was changed at the time...

Its such a beautiful song...there's certain songs that move you in different ways...I don't know "nothing compares to you' performed by Sinead O'Connor for me would be an equal comparison of bare beautifully articulated authenticity..I don't know..lol

If You Could Read My Mind is lovely - and I love Johnny Cash's version too - but a song by Gordon Lightfoot which I like even more is The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Amazing reflection on a terrible tragedy.

Great song ye but I'm specifically looking for more raw straight out there authentic feelings in a song rather than metaphorical story songs which I also enjoy btw...but I am a fan of The National who have a real knack for what I'm talking about... so that uncoated lyrical feeling I was looking for..

Unpopular opinion but I never liked the Johnny Cash version. Partially because I knew and liked the NIN original before but also because the JC version seemed a bit inauthentic to me - it seemed highly unlikely he was a NIN fan and more the case the song was probably foisted on him by the producer.
