New Munster chat thread folks. warning deserved there. https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=109477571#post109477571
Excited to see John Hodnett back, he’s putting together a very good season, almost always impactful when he plays.
Hopefully can get the win to keep the momentum we’ve gained lately going.
We need the win but as Neill said I wouldn't be chalking this up as a gimme and the weather is promised to be awful, wet & windy.
Like you, I'm always happy to see Hodnett named.
Did I dream it, or didn't Hodnett play against Ulster?
Might explain the selection across the backline. Just big lads, as far as the eye can see. Moldy day, so just crash through them, get it done ugly.
Nope, don't think he did
He was injured as far as I recall, so it’s his first game in a little while.
Liam Coombes back from injury as well, he’ll be a useful addition now we’re requiring wingers to hit a few rucks with the width we’re putting on the ball.
We’d be absolutely goosed without Jean Kleyn at the moment.
I was only half watching at a family Christmas thing. Must have been O'Sullivan wearing a scrum cap, maybe.
I absolutely missed that Liam was named in the team.
Good to see him back too
Kendellen, maybe no? JOS is only recently back from injury too I think.
Daly and Nash have outshone him this season, but he probably brings a bit more power than them, good to have him back.
I’m worried we’ll miss Frisch one tho.
That’s an excellent front-row for the loose tho, so hope we continue to throw it around.
Ok, but Munster don't do that to our players.
And the IRFU doesn't have such a policy
Healy is still a Munster player until the last game of the season.
And we wouldn't want to field a 10 who has missed all the training before the game and spent the entire week travelling from Scotland to Ireland to Italy
Kendellen was wearing a scrum cap
I'd say Rory Scannell is the next (starting) cab off the rank if Healy isn't available
What are the odds we see Kleyn slotting in at 10 at some point during the 6N?
Yeah possibly. The Tony Butler comment related mainly to the bench, like during the EI tour
Munster can't do that to our Irish players because the IRFU call the shots. AF decides who gets released from the Ireland camp on rest weekends. And Munster don't omit those released players from their URC games.
Munster have never been in the situation where they have any overseas internationals who can be called back. If Healy was called into the Scotland 6N squad they absolutely should recall him on the rest weekends as the English and French clubs do with their players.
Ok, but how much use would he be having not trained with Munster all week, and having travelled from Scotland to Ireland, and Ireland to Italy after an intense international camp from Monday to Wednesday
We're lucky it's an italian team we have to play (assuming Ben gets called up) They'll be missing most of their best players for that game
Munster have never been in the situation where they have any overseas internationals who can be called back
DDA was playing for SA while playing for Munster.
IF Ben gets a call up by Scotland for this 6Ns then we (Munster) should definitely call him back for the rest weeks, whether we get any great benefit or not is irrelevant. Why should we allow Scotland have a rested player in their 6Ns bid, they wouldn't do it for Ireland if the shoe was on the other foot.
Plus it's pretty easy to imagine a scenario where Ben Healy could be useful off the bench, even if we grant that international camp would be taxing on him.
I don't think it matters tbh. It would be astonishing management if Scotland called Healy up.
Not a gimme but our poor start to the league means we can't afford to lose games like this. I thought Fekitoa looked better last week so hoping to see him get a full 80 against the Lions. Patterson looks better every time I see him too so hopefully he has a big game.
Expecting Healy to have a stormer, get MoM and this thread to go into meltdown😊
In DDAs first season SA didn't play any games. In his second season he was away for the Rugby Championship, played for Munster then rejoined SA for the AIs. There was no situation for recall him on rest weekends as with the 6N.
Fekitoa was also released for Tonga for the November internationals and wasn't called back
That would be in breach of the world rugby regulations
But I guess they're not being enforced
https://www.world.rugby/organisation/governance/regulations/reg-9
"In the best interests of the sport at all levels Regulation 9 must be implemented by all stakeholders properly and in good faith. Compliance with not only the letter of the Regulation, but also its spirit is integral to achieving its objectives in the best interests of the sport. The implementation of the Regulation necessarily requires communication and consultation between different stakeholders particularly in regard to Player management and welfare considerations which should be addressed within the spirit of the Regulation. Areas where this may be particularly significant include, but are not limited to, medical issues, rehabilitation into participation and resumption of duty. In considering any implementation and/or enforcement scenarios World Rugby will seek to ensure that full and proper regard is had to the overriding philosophy and spirit of the Regulation in assessing the conduct of the parties concerned."
I wouldn't have thought it likely but Hastings injury means they're actively looking for OH cover
He wouldn't miss any training. Scotland can't call him up til February and the rest weeks are not part of the release period so he would be with Munster the entire week.
The period covered by Regulation 9 is only 5 out of 7 weeks - i.e. the actual matchday weeks.
I think Healy will play well. He has a lot to play for.
If he plays to his potential it benefits Munster. I wish him the best in his future career, but he still has a job to do at Munster. If he finishes the season well and helps Munster finish the season qualified for the Hcup next year or even helps us to win a trophy, he'll be leaving Munster in good standing.
Scotland can call him on the last week of January when they have their training camp Monday to Wednesday
Limitation on the number of Squad sessions to which the Right to Release applies
9.13 The Right to Release for Squad sessions pursuant to this Regulation 9 will apply to three Squad sessions for up to 30 Senior National Representative Team Players each calendar year each of a maximum of three consecutive days (excluding travel). Such periods shall be in addition to the release provisions for International Matches, International Tours and International Tournaments. Such sessions shall be taken as set out below subject to the three consecutive day periods not preventing a Player(s) from participating in a Match for his Rugby Body or Club:
(b) For Northern Hemisphere Unions, Monday to Wednesday of the week preceding the assembly period for the Northern Hemisphere Release Period.
What are you on about? IF he was called up by Scotland he'd be released at the start of the international window AFTER the Benetton game. Irish players will be called into the training camp outside of the official release window and miss the Benetton game because the IRFU can demand that as they own the provinces and pay all the players. Other unions can't demand that of Irish based players. He'd also have to return to Munster at the start of the rest weeks if Munster recalled him.
