New Munster chat thread folks. warning deserved there. https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=109477571#post109477571
How long would changing nationalities even take? If they've only started going through the process this month surely he wouldn't be registered as Scottish in time to play in the 6Ns and unable to be called into camps.
I'm pretty sure that's what was reported in the last day or 2.
Edit: Yep, Murray Kinsella alluded to it:
There are two URC game weeks the week after the first two weeks of the 6N - 17th/18th Feb, and then again 3rd / 4th of March, while the next round of URC fixtures then is the week after the 6N finishes.
If Sexton has recovered in time, then you'd imagine Crowley would be released back to get some game time for Munster in those weeks between Rounds 2 & 3 of the 6N. If he hasn't, then they could find themselves short at 10 if all three of Carbery, Crowley & Healy actually find themselves in the international 23s for Ireland and Scotland.
Again that’s true but it’s not what the poster was asking. Though him being in camp would Scotland on the non game weeks, would affect Muster too much.
Munster can recall him on the rest weekends as the French and English clubs do with their Scottish players.
This is true. You seem quite certain of that?
No, only the player themselves could turn down the call up.
He couldn't have gone to either, seeing as neither offered him a contract.
No
Can Munster refuse to release Healy during the 6 nations?
Given the lack of options at 10 ahead of him. Blair Kinghorn being a prime example. I would say he has a far better chance with Scotland. I really hope it works out for him.
He could have gone to Ulster or Connacht and been guaranteed game time. Though I don’t think it would necessarily have lead to an Irish call up.
Yes, that could be true but as I've said Ben has hedged his bets on International rugby and now that he hasn't made the Irish squads again he's decided to try Scotland.
I hope Ben's career takes off something like Tommy Seymour
interesting to see how this plays out
Those 'narratives' look pretty similar to me, tbh, but more importantly, "narratives" don't impact team selection, national or provincial, one bit.
Looking purely at selections, we have a guy who is third choice for his province and never looked at by the national side (and by my count, Farrell has capped six different out-halves, plus Frawley for Ireland XV) - I have to ask, what's the big deal?
The selection against Lions tomorrow is heavily rotated and limited by injury.
Not having any locks or out halves on the bench is a worry but hopefully the Lions are put off by the travelling and crappy weather conditions that are forecast for tomorrow evening
Poor Gavin Coombes and Kleyn are being flogged. If either picks up an injury tomorrow we're in big trouble
When Carberry was not playing ten, crowley has started including in big games. Its only this week when they seem to be wholesale resting players (questionable decision btw) that healy starts.
Anyway, in terms of IRFU pecking order.. they dont pick guys like healy. They very reluctantly picked ross byrne behind crowley and he is a very similar (but better) player to Healy. Healy isnt their type.
It's gas how the narrative keeps changing. Earlier in the year the narrative was Crowley shouldn't get preference over Frawley because he was 3rd choice at Munster. Now it's Healy shouldn't have expected an opportunity with Ireland because he is 3rd choice at Munster.
rumour is too small a word for this when it was publicly said outright in podcasts.
and no, what youve said above has no correlation with anything. Healy wasnt good when Crowley was away with EI. Crowley played well in SA and earned a shot at the jersey when he returned. Coincidentally Carbery returned to fitness and regained the 10 shirt. Crowleys "more opportunities" were from 15 and 12
Crowley getting more opportunities than healy when he came back kind of tells me that rumour is prob not true.
Exactly. It's not anyone's fault, it's life, people move on. I'd imagine clubs have to choose between 2nd and 3rd choice players every year, would be much worse if it was Crowley going. I like Healy but if we want to get to a point where we're winning European Cups and URCs, then I feel Crowley has the most potential for that.
The good thing is that there's no debate around who's the back up to Carberry. Crowley will be getting a lot of game time at 10 in the next 12 months. It's up to him now to take his chance.
Would be great to see Crowley vs Healy for Ireland and Scotland in the 2024 Six Nations😄
Not being picked from the EI tour was a borderline mark of respect - a reference to the fact that he was needed by Munster during that period. The players who were selected were predominantly third choice guys at their provinces (with a small few very limited exceptions) to minimise disruption for the provinces.
As another posted - I doubt this would have turned out any better for him if he'd gone to SA and Crowley stayed home and played for Munster in those games.
He's fallen behind Crowley because Crowley is outplaying and looks the better player, with a higher long-term ceiling.
Crowley is also the guy who's style of play better fits how Ireland play and how Mike Prendergast seems to want Munster to play.
You've heard a rumour that he was picked, but Munster didn't want him to go.
However I've heard it said elsewhere that he was never picked for the EI tour and that, not Munster requesting he stayed behind, was the reason he wasn't involved.
So were Carty, Fitzgerald, Madigan and Burns. So overlooked means not good enough?
but not emerging ireland.....
This was discussed yesterday , he was playing for his province right up to the AIs, so he was in fact overlooked for the 6Ns, the summer tour and the AIs.
Completely, he's so robust and is having a very good season on top of that too. Was delighted for him with a rare man-of-the-match award a few weeks ago too, but it's seldom he doesn't put in a shift.
Indeed, hard to have any hope of being an international when overlooked by your province.
He wasn’t overlooked, he simply wasn’t good enough to force his way into the equation. Which is why he is third choice at Munster. Overlooked would suggest he was demanding inclusion but was ignored. Which was never the case.
Definitely, Kleyn is due a break but with so many lock injuries he's our go to man at the moment
No further update on Kiran McDonald arm injury, so we are very lucky to have Kleyn, he's our MVP at the moment.
