Old thread seems to be permanently locked. It will be interesting if anything can come of this at last.

Don’t forget former FBI agent too!
Incidentally, there was also a mobile home park situated near by.
Was everybody accounted for here? It would be quite the 'norm' to lend the passion wagons to the mates for the weekend(s)
As it was the middle of winter, maybe a horny off spring just took the bunch of keys and they were not missed...??
Again, pure speculation and conjure... But why not?
You really need to go to Bantry Garda station with all this.
This valuable insight is just wasted being posted here alone.
Okay. Do you have any relatives living in America? Have they learnt Russian and Italian?
Dreenane had two drug busts. And a murder. But of course it is impossible there is any connection.
Prenderville and Byrne where the first two guards at the murder scene. If Sophie was their informant in 1994, for the drugs raid, in any normal world, Alfie should have been the prime suspect. He and Shirley should have been arrested and sweated like Ian and Jules were. Instead Alfie started supplying Prenderville with his ideas who the suspects were, and Shirley was allowed to drive a car load of potential evidence to the tip.
I totally agree Alfie and Shirley should have been treated as suspects. Their behaviour on discovering the body was beyond bizarre. The Gardai just let them go about their business like a normal day and destroy the crime scene.
Some posters here with low intelligence still refuse to explore other theories though.
On the West Cork podcast Shirley and Alfie told them (but not recorded) that Shirley was going through the OPEN gate when she spotted the body. She then screamed and blew the horn (presumably to get Alfie down to the gate) but then ran back to their own cottage through the fields. Not back up the lane. How did she know the killer wasn't still around? Instead of driving back up in relative safety a woman in her 60s ran up a hill through gorse and briars. Then Alfie goes to Sophie's house to warn her not to go down the lane. Why didn't he telephone her? Did he see the blood at the back door? Then neither Alfie or Shirley could bring themselves to look at the body but Shirley was composed enough to drive to Schull rubbish dump.
Look at the route Shirley would have to take from the gate up the fields to her house, top left.
"Look at the route Shirley would have to take from the gate up the fields to her house, top left."
She was hardly going to turn the car around and drive back through the scene past the body.
The route Shirley took back to her house took her up Sophie's lawn and along the back of her house and back onto the lane up to Alfie, the shortest and easiest route on foot.
Hardly "through the fields".
Don't be blinkered.... Explore all possible avenues
Not a Guard from the 1996 era are you??
It's because of the mindsets similar to your own, that this investigation was lost before it had even began.
Just saying.....
What are you talking about?
In what way did they destroy the crime scene?
Straight out of the boards.ie book of "Do you work for Ryanair/Are Lingus/RTE?".
If like you one comes up with ideas that are not based on fact then anything is possible.
But if one only deals in facts then it becomes far narrower.
I prefer only the facts.
Perfect......
You have all the known facts to hand - So who killed her then??
I'm waiting........
How near is nearby?
Genuine question.
The Moorings - Within 10 miles of crime scene
I don't have all the facts, I only have the facts that are in the public domain.
And they are things like Bailey having scratches on his arms that were not there Sunday night, Bailey not being in his house that night, Bailey tell more than one person that he did it, Bailey having a history of violence towards women.
You on the other hand are coming up with stuff about a bar owner seeing Sophie with a "mystery man" when in fact that publican never saw Sophie with a man.
Or a petrol station attendant that claimed he saw her with a man when it was never established if it was Sophie he actually saw.
Another poster is claiming that Sophie erected a mailbox to mark her territory like some sort of jungle male pissing in the grass, when in fact there were three mailboxes at the end of the road.
Now you are going on about this caravan park 10 miles away that may or may not be Important.
What are you basing it's importance on ?
Do you know if the Gardai were aware of it and spoke to people there at the time, where exactly is it?
Or are you just coming in here asking has x, y or z been done as if you are the first person to ever com up with that idea.
Multiple witnesses attest to Bailey having scratches before the murder and to the scratches being inconsistent with having being received at the scene. If he got scratched at the scene where is the forensics?
All of this is covered in the DPP report which is why he wasnt sent to trial.
All the evidence against Bailey is similarly debateable and questionable and of dubious quality.
If you dont know if the caravan or any other angle is important you have no basis for coming onto the thread and trying to shout down discussion of it.
Where can I get the DPP report?
My understanding was that the barman in the pub Sunday night definitively did not see scratches on Bailey's arms.
Everything seems to point to bailey imo , his stories are like swiss cheese for holes in them
The most likely explanation for the way she was found is someone knew of her, turned up at night intoxicated with a sexual/romantic motive and was rebuffed and lost it
Other explanations for that type of killing seem less likely
I'd say that was the Garda assumption before they even suspected bailey
That doesnt mean they werent there. Not sure why we should assume the barman would notice them given it is dependent on many factors - how observant he is, how busy, what bailey was wearing.
I would further add:
Bailey could have easily hidden the scratches if he wanted to.
If you have just been scratched eg gardening they are barely visible until the healing starts.
Link to what is presumed to be the DPP report.

Can't understand how you, of all people Fr Tod Umptious, have been kept out of the loop.
Expect the full uncensored report on your desk whenever you get one.
Did anything come of the recent search at the scene of the crime? Mapping they called it. What is mapping, could the murder weapon be buried there?
I actually found it.
And yes it does bring up the scratches and why they were not good evidence.
Interesting how those backing up that Bailey got the scratches from the tree were the Jules Thomas and her daughters.
Man wakes up feeling murderously randy. Leaves a house full of women he isn't related to go trudge around a freezing wasteland. Yeah, that makes sense
Alfie hand was bandaged from a dog bite. Despite not having a dog. The dog just stayed long enough to bite Alfie but, wouldn't you know, was gone the night of the murder.
I wonder did the guards do a sketch of the bite, as they did with Bailey's scratches?
Okay. Show me the three mailboxes
Only one box for all 3 properties .
Of more interest in that photo are the tyre marks bottom left of the photo. Car tyre marks are probably the Garda car as they drove up to the scene.
But there also appears to be tractor tyre marks, seemingly as fresh as the car marks. Now who would be arriving at that gate on a tractor?
( Before the smart answers, Bailey didn't have a tractor);
Father Tod said "FACT" there were three mailboxes. That was not true. If anything the one mailbox looks like it has been knocked over and then crudely propped up with rocks. Like an angry neighbour had knocked it over and the mailbox owner had done a hasty repair out of derision. Classic boreen vendetta.
The only mystery in all this is why the desperation to cover up for Alfie.
