58,018 earthquakes in the past 365 days.

Dec 20, 2021 — A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Northern California. I felt this one!
7.3 M 60 miles from Tutuala, Timor-Leste. December 29, 2021.
5.5 approximately 591 miles from New Zealand.
With the Afhanistan earthquake making the news , I had a Google of on earthquakes today. 58 !!. From Alaska ,to Japan, Purto Rico to Argentina. Really lucky in this country

There's 100s a day. I have an earthquake app on my phone. Just interested in the subject ever since the Pembrokeshire earthquake in the 80s. I was only a child but it woke me that morning. In the south. The app is called volcanos and earthquakes and you can set it to see only the big ones or all of them.. There's also a link within it that tells of activity is low moderate or high. The earth is always grumbling.
Good source.
What do you call the earthquake app,? I might get it. Fairly interested in stuff like this
There it is
Earthquake prediction claims by non-scholarly sources (news media, blogs etc) should be viewed with caution. At best scholarly sources can only suggest per the scientific method. And geological studies are early in their development. Certainly, persons living in places like California should have plans for when something like this may happen, as some earthquakes in the state have been catastrophic. Then again, there have been many shakes in California due to the numerous small to large faults. It’s almost a daily thing, but very few are troubling.
Lately the news media reports that the Big One is coming. Well, odds favor that it is. But geologically speaking, an 8 point earthquake (or 9) may occur in Northern California in the next few minutes, or not for a thousand years or so. Who can predict when it will happen with scientific reliability and validity with today’s models and methods? Conceptually speaking, a thousand years is only a blink of time geologically.
Admittedly, living in California, I do keep a ready bag near my front door, with absolute necessities for a few days. We have many reasons with wild fires, earthquakes, and living near the Pacific, tsunamis. But I do not worry and lose sleep over it. We do live on a moving planet. Hello Pangaea.
Good morning, I've been watching my earthquake app and there seems to be a swarm occurring in the reykjanes ridge mid Atlantic region. the last couple of days. Some of the quakes are up to 5.1 on richer scale. I did wonder is it an under sea volcano? Any experts out there got any ideas? Curiosity is killing me because its not something that is always active.
Thanks in advance.
No comments yet but they're getting bigger
Nevermind. found it
Big one in the mid atlantic today
20 December 2022 Northern California registered a 6.4 magnitude earthquake near Ferndale about 3 miles off the Pacific coast. Over 71,000 residents in Humboldt County lost electricity for about 10 hours. There were several aftershocks occurring for 2 days in the surrounding areas ranging in the 3 and 4 magnitudes. The damage was such for the governor to declare a state of emergency.
7.8 earthquake in Turkey and Syria, followed by a 7.5 aftershock has killed over 24,000 people and counting.
In referencing geological time, how is it decided when preshocks and post shocks can be attached to a particular earthquake in question?
Living with earthquakes has been a typical adaptation for California residents. New arrivals seem to be surprised. We have alternatives for quakes, including extra stored water, food, and a reserve battery power device for mobile phones. The last 6.4 earthquake resulted in a loss of power for several hours. Recent atmospheric rivers have also adversely impacted electricity delivery with falling trees, rock and mud slides.
California exists between two tectonic plates in motion. The large San Andreas fault has been one result among many smaller fault lines throughout the state. Just experienced a few minor earthquakes, including a 4.6 magnitude near Fortuna this week.
