He was so disgusted by his mother's contuined lying and the fact she wouldn't end it with Al he couldn't take being in the village any longer. He reckoned he couldn't tell Paddy as it would break him but also he would end up causing serious harm to someone, ie. either Chas or Al so he legged it.
Think he might have also told Chas she was dead to him and that still didn't make her see sense.
